nothing "racist" about calling out racism

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10025150691

A thread about rush limbaugh's racist comments re: black mississippians was locked by...???? who would find that objectionable? Please comment.
June 25, 2014

For the umpteenth time: Calling out racism is NOT racist or divisive

It is the duty of every thinking person to challenge racism, at every turn. I have a black acquaintance who calls Asian people "chinamen," and I get on her case about it.

I see a thread was just LOCKED about rush limbaugh's ridiculous Uncle Tom comments about black people who voted for Cochran in Mississippi. Sorry...posting a thread about the overt, ever-present, and never-ending racism of the RW is NOT RACISM.

I do not want to date you

Would suffice. I will not date you unless you have sex with me is not the same as I will not date you.

General Smedley Butler is still right: War IS a Racket

“Yes, they are getting ready for another war. Why shouldn’t they? It pays high dividends. But what does it profit the men who are killed? What does it profit their mothers and sisters, their wives and their sweethearts? What does it profit their children? What does it profit anyone except the very few to whom war means huge profits? Yes, and what does it profit the nation?”
General Smedley D. Butler, USMC 1933

More from the book:

War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives."

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

In the World War a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows. [Please note these are 1935 U.S. dollars. To adjust for inflation, multiply all figures X 15 or more]

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?

Have you heard about this lunatic?

This guy actually works for Homeland Security If they can't even screen their employees properly...

The war is on! The smallhats (white so-called jews) have stepped it up.

So begins a defiant screed posted this weekend on the Facebook page of War on the Horizon (WOH), the anti-white, anti-LGBT website operated by Ayo Kimathi, a black Department of Homeland Security employee.

Kimathi was put on paid administrative leave last Friday after his double life – DHS employee by day, angry, homophobic racist by night – was confirmed and reported by Hatewatch on August 21. Kimathi, a small business specialist, works for a unit of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that is responsible for procuring such items as handcuffs, ammunition and guns.

Kimathi calls himself “the Irritated Genie” as he goes around the country predicting and advocating race war. He apparently has no intention of putting the genie back in the bottle.

Less than 48 hours after Kimathi was put on leave, the Facebook page for WOH declared that “the Irritated Genie is under attack from the zionist smallhats, the Uncle Tom koons, the white-sex offenders, the haters, the conspiracy theorists, etc. … Our website is getting flooded with traffic at the moment, but we expect the owner of our hosting to terminate our website any day now.”

I went to my local bar last night for a end of DOMA toast...but VRA had me down

local gay bar, everyone was excited about the SCOTUS ruling, and some people were making plans to get married as soon as possible. i, however, couldn't shake the feeling of being shafted as a black person, while celebrating as a gay person. I live in California, so I don't think my right to vote will be affected by the latest horrible, backward, crazy SCOTUS decision but it most certainly affect other black people. I can shake this feeling of...betrayal, disappointment, weariness. I find it difficult to rejoice in the outcome yesterday because of the outcome the day before.

scalia talks of racial entitlements...while the murderous bastard zimmerman stands trial for a real racial entitlement: the ability to murder black people, without consequence. roberts is an anti-voting rights activist, and had no business deciding this case (ditto for scalia). alioto and thomas: disgraces. there is a special place in hell for them.

my friend, a former DUer, moved to guatemala a few years ago, and i am thinking of joining her. i really admire the people who are energized to keep fighting, but i am tired, disappointed, etc, etc, etc. i've been engaged in this battle since ronald reagan was nominated, and i am not sure i want to do it anymore.

Hey GOP, the party of personal responsibility: we'd rather blame Nader than hold you accountable

for all the atrocities you continue to commit. so...please continue, because we don't have a clue as to how to stop you, but we get endless hours of joy from blaming Nader for everything you've done.

stopping the recount in florida 2000--Nader's fault. if he wasn't running, there would have been no need for a recount (never mind katerine harris' voter purge). but since there was a voter purge in florida, and problems elsewhere, it's still Nader's fault because we don't hold the GOP accountable for its crimes. the GOP is the only legitimate opponent of democrats.

gore v. bush--Nader's fault. if he didn't run, it wouldn't have been close enough to steal.

citizen's united---Nader's fault. if hed hadn't run, and if you hadn't stopped the recount and if you hadn't created a one-time only law for george bush that disenfranchised all the voters...president gore would have filled a scotus spot. clearly: nader's fault.

voting rights clause struck down: Nader's fault. see number 1 or 2 or 3.

rinse, lather, repeat.

how different things might have been if americans were more pissed off about gore v. bush (some call if treason) than Nader's decision to participate in an election (which is not illegal, last time i checked.)

oh...and Nader is also really, really bad for stating there is no difference between corporate bought and paid for republicons and corporate bought and paid for democrats. there is no difference between michelle bachmann and sheila jackson lee...yeah, that's exactly what he meant!!!

Watch those "dehumanizing stares," folks

apparently "dehumanizing stares" at police officers is now an offense that will get you taken down, choked, arrested...and charged with assualting a police officer. just when you think you've heard it all, but then again, any excuse will do. staring while black is apparently a crime too.

New cell phone footage shows Miami-Dade Police officers aggressively pinning an unarmed teen to the ground while choking him. His alleged crime: giving the officers “dehumanizing stares” and “clenching his fists.”

Fourteen-year-old Tremaine McMillan says he was feeding his puppy and playing on the beach with some friends when cops riding ATVs approached him and asked what he was doing. The “peacekeeping” officers say they saw McMillan roughhousing with another teenager, told him it was “unacceptable behavior,” and asked where his mother was. When McMillan walked away, they chased him on ATVs, jumped out, pinned him to the ground and arrested him. According to police reports, McMillan “attempted to pull his arm away, stating, ‘Man, don’t touch me like I did something.’” See footage of the incident, captured by McMillan’s mother:

McMillan says he obeyed orders, and was leading the officers towards his mother when they jumped him. The teen adds that he was holding and feeding his puppy at the time, who got injured during the encounter.

Uprooting Racism By Paul Kivel

I haven't read the entire book, but this beginning is a great beginning: "Racism is based on the concept of whiteness....a powerful fiction enforced by power and violence." BOOM...there it is, succinct, accurate, and undeniable.

I am always looking for ways to introduce the topic of race here without eliciting the standard knee-jerk responses, so I may post this in GD later.

Racism is based on the concept of whiteness — a powerful fiction enforced by power and violence. Whiteness is a constantly shifting boundary separating those who are entitled to certain benefits from those whose exploitation and vulnerability to violence is justified by their not being white.

Racism itself is a long-standing characteristic of many human societies. For example, justifying exploitation and violence against other peoples because they are inferior or different has a long history within Greek, Roman and European Christian traditions. The beginnings of biological racism go back to the Spanish Inquisition. Trying to root out false Muslim and Jewish converts to Christianity but unable to reliably do so, the courts ruled that anyone with a Jewish or Muslim parent or grandparent was not a Christian. Soon, the courts were ruling that any person with any Muslim or Jewish blood was incapable of being a righteous Christian because they did not have clean blood (limpieza de sangre).1

In more recent historical times in Western Europe, those with English heritage were perceived to be pure white. The Irish, Russians and Spanish were considered darker races, sometimes black and certainly non-white. The white category was slowly extended to include northern and middle European people, but still, less than a century ago, it definitely excluded eastern or southern European peoples such as Italians, Poles, Russians and Greeks. In the last few decades, although there is still prejudice against people from these geographical backgrounds, they have become generally accepted as white in the United States.2

The important distinction in the United States has always been binary — first between those who counted as
Christians and those who were pagans. As historian Winthrop Jordan has written:

Protestant Christianity was an important element in English patriotism …. Christianity was interwoven into [an Englishman’s] conception of his own nationality, and he was therefore inclined to regard the Negroes’ lack of true religion as part of theirs. Being a Christian was not merely a matter of subscribing to certain doctrines; it was a quality inherent in oneself and in one’s society. It was interconnected with all the other attributes of normal and proper men.3
