Will Netanyahu's strategy achieve a lasting peace?

He says there will be more months of war, followed by an open ended occupation of Gaza.

It's highly questionable whether Hamas can be fully neutered as an instrument of resistance and terror. Additionally, the wake of the carnage and immense trauma of the Palestinian people may very well spawn the next generation of hardcore committed terrorists.

A lasting peace in this conflict will likely require good faith cooperation with Israel's neighbors. By the time the dust settles over the rubble, what will the death toll be? Israel will be viewed by many in the region as a pariah state and US credibility as an honest broker could be damaged, given our unconditional support for Israel's military campaign. How many women and children were slaughtered by bombs made in the USA?

Was the course chosen by Netanyahu truly the best course to achieve both short and long term security for the state of Israel?

Schneider proves Biden's point

When anyone criticizes or applies the rule of law to The Fascist Goon the magaloons turn into fascist thugs, advocating or perpetrating violence like Hitler's brownshirts.

They also go after prosecutors, law clerks, election workers, and anyone in the public eye who dared to oppose the Orange Fuhrer.

They are loyal to their cult leader, not to the United States Constitution or the highest principles of America's founding.

I don't trust the current USSC to honor precedent, but...

I think they realize the would-be dictator is a threat to their power.

He has zero regard for the US Constitution or the rule of law, except how he can abuse and harness the latter to serve his own sociopathic proclivities.

The Supreme Court does not directly control the means to enforce their rulings. They rely on the institutions which the Defendant intends to usurp by replacing career public servants with loyalists who serve not the rule of law, but the rule of one man. The institutional guardrails held during his previous reign, and he fully intends to remove them.

The judiciary would no longer be a co-equal branch of government. The 6-3 "conservative" supermajority has demonstrated its corruption and dishonesty in pursuing their own agenda which coincides with much of the political and financial support for the Defendant, but I highly doubt they will neuter their own power by bestowing immunity upon the creature who would destroy the institutions upon which they depend.

Our system is supposed to be upheld by the principles of public service and sworn oaths. Ironically, unprincipled self interest just may save it.

Voting for Republicans means poisoning the planet upon which all life depends

Voting for toxins which cause birth defects and shorten the lives of millions is NOT pro-life.

Voting to accelerate the transformation of finite resources into multiple forms of pollution including greenhouse gases causing catastrophic climate change is NOT pro-life.

They demonstrate with their votes they care not a whit about babies after they're born or their own children and grandchildren upon whom they will bestow a planet ravaged by the upheavals of climate change and the loss of natural ecosystems which sustain not only human life but all the beautiful flora and fawna which contribute so much to our existence on this life boat we call Earth.

What is "Christianity itself"??

This thread has some excellent posts discussing what Christ himself may or may not have actually said, and what his core teachings really were. Too much depends on what was written by others two thousand years ago and subsequent interpretations by those with their own agendas.

Today, Christianity means different things to different people. I respect those for whom their faith is a private matter which guides their moral behavior, being kind to others.

As for rightwing Evangelicals, I think they are more responsible than anyone else for any "danger" to "Christianity" which I will define as the influence it has over culture and world affairs, based on the number of adherents and the sum of their wealth and power.

The "Christian Nationalist" movement in the United States is a thinly veiled form of fascism, which most people who haven't imbibed that particular kool-aid view as repulsive and dangerous.

Those who see the hypocrites, chatlatans, racists, and greedy oligarchs for what they are -- driving that movement in a quest for power and control -- are rising up against it. Young people are rejecting "Christianity" because they are repulsed by the rightwing Evangelicals who are putting their stamp on that religion.

Those "Christians" complain they are being persecuted when they are thwarted in their efforts to impose their own narrow minded culture and restrictions on everyone else.

They themselves are the greatest "danger" to Christianity. Their version of it deserves to crash and burn, as does the MAGA version of the Republican Party which poses a very real threat to the great experiment in American democracy.

The two go hand-in-hand.

Evangelicals believe "They're coming for the church"

I assume "They" means liberals and the deep state government. Therefore, someone like Trump is needed to save the church which also means saving America.

Which, of course, is nuts.

Nobody on the left is advocating to somehow abolish churches. The Democratic Party has no desire for that to happen or to attempt any such thing. We support the Constitutional separation of church and state, which is the greatest guarantor of religious freedom.

It seems to me that rightwing Evangelicals believe they are being threatened when THEY are being thwarted from imposing their own narrow minded beliefs on everyone else.

They see young people turning away from the church, believing their minds are being poisoned against Jesus, but much more likely young people see the sheer hypocrisy of these rightwing Christians and want nothing to do with them because their actions betray everything Jesus taught.

Evangelicals are their own worst enemies, and they have made a deal with the orange devil who poses the real threat to the American Constitutional republic

Just ask Liz Cheney.

About Martin Eden

Born 1957, my memory reaches back to JFK and my interest in politics to 1968. My parents were lefties who always cared about civil rights, and my Aunt Kate (born 1907) was an organizer for labor. She was one of three ladies interviewed in the 1976 film Union Maids, which was nominated for an academy award. I like to hike & backpack, and still compete in slowpitch softball.
