Glens Falls man charged in U.S. Capitol intrusion arraigned on Wednesday

GLENS FALLS — The Glens Falls man accused of illegally being in the U.S. Capitol after supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the building was arraigned on two federal charges on Wednesday.

James Bonet, 29, was arrested on charges of knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, according to paperwork filed in U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia.

Bonet appeared virtually before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel Stewart for a hearing in the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joshua Rosenthal outlined the maximum potential punishment that Bonet could face.

On the charges of unlawfully entering the building, he could face up to a year in prison, a $100,000 fine and one year of probation. The disorderly conduct charge carries a potential sentence of 6 months in prison, a $5,000 fine and a year of probation.

Bonet is accused of entering the building illegally with a group of people who claimed there was fraud in the 2020 presidential election. He had posted a series of videos to his Facebook page of him entering the building on Jan. 6.

Republicans Say It Is Unconstitutional to Hold Officials Accountable Unless They Are Hillary

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Explaining their vote against an impeachment trial, Senate Republicans asserted that it is unconstitutional to hold government officials accountable unless they are Hillary Clinton.

“I’ve consulted with the finest constitutional lawyers in the country,” Senator John Cornyn, of Texas, said. “Without exception, they determined that the enforcement measures that the Framers created, in 1787, were intended only to be used in cases of Hillary.”

Senator Josh Hawley, of Missouri, concurred. “To see legal guardrails that James Madison explicitly designed for Hillary Clinton used on someone who is demonstrably not Hillary Clinton is a disgrace,” he said.

Senator Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina, struck a more conciliatory note, suggesting that there were circumstances under which Senate Republicans might support an impeachment trial next month. “If a decision were made to put Hillary Clinton on trial, we would be on board with that,” he said.

Missouri bill would allow deadly force against demonstrators

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri senator on Monday pitched a bill that would allow the use of deadly force against protesters on private property and give immunity to people who run over demonstrators blocking traffic.

The proposal is one of several that follow sometimes violent protests in Missouri last summer over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody, including demonstrations that blocked traffic on busy roads in the St. Louis area.

“To think that your right to protest enables you the right to stop traffic and literally stop people’s ability to move about freely in this nation is a gross misunderstanding of our constitutional rights,” bill sponsor Sen. Rick Brattin said during the Monday hearing.

The Harrisonville Republican said blocking traffic can be dangerous if it stops ambulances or police from responding to emergencies.

Republicans Against Impeachment Propose "Three Coup Attempts, You're Out" Law

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Senate Republicans who opposed impeachment are proposing an alternative: a piece of legislation called “Three Coup Attempts, You’re Out.”

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, said that the law would send a clear signal to future Presidents that “we will have zero tolerance for coup attempts if they try to do it three times.”

“After the first coup attempt, a President would receive a warning, just as you would if you made an illegal left turn or had a broken tail light,” Paul explained. “After the second coup attempt, the United States Senate will draft a resolution telling you that you’d better not try it a third time.”

Paul was vague when asked what the punishment would be for a third coup attempt, saying, “As in most legislation, the devil is in the details. But the gist of it is, insurrect me once, shame on you; insurrect me twice, shame on me; insurrect me three times, it’s time to have a serious talk about this.”
