Biofuel group asks U.S. court to review EPA's refinery waivers

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A biofuels trade group asked a federal court on Tuesday to rule whether the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency violated the law in granting a growing number of small refineries exemptions from renewable fuel laws, according to a court filing.

The Advanced Biofuels Association (ABFA), which counts oil major BP Plc as a member, submitted a petition to review the agency’s waiver decisions in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington DC.

“ABFA members are concerned that Administrator (Scott) Pruitt is granting these exemptions in an arbitrary and capricious manner to undisclosed parties behind closed doors with no accountability for its decision-making process,” Michael McAdams, the head of the trade group, said in a statement.

The EPA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The lawsuit is the latest move in the biofuel industry’s fight with the EPA over the agency’s expansion of the small-refinery hardship exemption from the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

Ford's smart windows can help blind passengers take in the view

It converts the view into vibrations that they can feel on the window.

Ford has created a device that could help visually impaired travelers get a sense of what the scenery around them looks like. It's called "Feel the View" and it turns a window into a vibrating depiction of what's outside. First, with the push of a button, the device snaps a picture of the window's view. It then turns that picture into a grayscale image and each shade of gray corresponds to a vibration of different intensity. Feel the View can generate up to 255 different levels of vibrations. The blind or visually impaired rider can then touch the window and feel what the outside looks like.

Along with the vibrations, an AI-powered vocal assistant connected to the car's audio system can give a short description of what's being felt. In the video below, you can see the vocal assistant tell a rider that she's touching a snowy mountain as she traces it on the window. "We seek to make people's lives better and this was a fantastic opportunity to help blind passengers experience a great aspect of driving," Ford Italy spokesperson Alù Saffi said in a statement. "The technology is advanced, but the concept is simple – and could turn mundane journeys into truly memorable ones."

Ford says Feel the View -- which was conceived and developed by Ford's Italian team, GTB Roma and Aedo, a start-up interested in devices for the visually impaired -- is a prototype. We've reached out to Ford to see if there are plans to further develop and manufacture the device and we'll update this post when we hear more.

FedEx and UPS burn less gas to deliver boxes

With so many American consumers shopping online, cleaning up delivery vans has become a big business.

FedEx and UPS have both recently announced that they are expanding their fleets of electric, plug-in hybrid, and other cleaner delivery vehicles.

The biggest news comes from FedEx, which pressed its first hydrogen fuel-cell delivery truck into service on the East Coast, outside of Albany, N.Y.

Hydrogen fueling stations have been slow to arrive in the Northeast. The large van will be refueled at the headquarters of Plug Power, in Latham, N.Y., which builds the fuel cell in the truck.

FedEx expects the van to be able to travel 160 miles on a full hydrogen charge, compared with just over 60 miles for a battery-electric truck. It has already been on the road for 3,000 miles in testing, and is expected to cover 27,000 miles in the first six months of testing.

WATCH: Giuliani tells Fox News Hannity that Trump personally repaid Cohen for Stormy Daniels payment

In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, former New York City mayor and current Donald Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani unveiled a new anti-Justice Department conspiracy theory, predicted the president is going to win the Nobel Peace Prize, defended Ivanka Trump’s honor and offered a bombshell about the Stormy Daniels payout.

During the long-winded interview, Giuliani told Hannity that Trump personally repaid his longtime attorney Michael Cohen for the $130,000 “hush agreement” payment to Stormy Daniels — and that there fore he couldn’t have violated campaign finance laws.

Earlier in the interview, he also revealed seemingly new information about special counsel Robert Mueller.

“You have an investigation in which Mueller is selected the day after he’s turned down for FBI director by [Deputy Attorney General Rod] Rosenstein, who was there when he was turned down,” the former NYC mayor said. “There are thousands of people that could have been selected for that job. Also, a friend of [fired FBI director] James Comey.”
