A draw of the cards makes William Shearon mayor of Bradenton Beach

MANATEE -- William Shearon was named mayor of Bradenton Beach once again Wednesday after he drew an ace of clubs in an unusual tie-breaker that marked Manatee County history.

Mayor Jack Clarke, who sat across from Shearon in the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections office, drew a 10 of clubs. The tense moment came after a machine recount and a manual recount confirmed the 195-195 result from Tuesday night.

Before opening a fresh deck of cards and shuffling them, county Supervisor of Elections Michael Bennett laid out the rules to both men as others looked on from the other side of a wall cut-out. Clarke cut the cards first, and then Bennett reshuffled the cards before Shearon took his turn.

According to Bennett, this was the first time in at least 20

years that an election ended this way in Manatee County.

"First of all, it's significant in Manatee County for people to understand -- if nothing else, everybody should understand how important their vote is," Bennett said. "Too many times, people say, 'Well, my vote doesn't matter.' We proved their vote mattered. They did it for themselves."

A little more than half of Bradenton Beach's 758 registered voters cast ballots in the mayoral election.

This video of Texas cops stopping a black professor is a racial ‘Rorschach test’

On Oct. 24, University of North Texas professor Dorothy Bland was walking around her affluent Dallas suburb when she was stopped by police. Bland, who is African American, had been exercising in the street. The cops, who are both white, asked her to walk in the opposite direction so she could see traffic or, even better, to use the sidewalk. Roughly three minutes later, she was on her way.

The short and seemingly simple interaction has proved anything but, however.

Several days later, Bland, who is the dean of UNT’s journalism school, penned an op-ed in the Dallas Morning News claiming that she had been racially profiled.

“Walking while black is a crime in many jurisdictions,” she wrote. “May God have mercy on our nation.”

Corinth Police responded by releasing the officers’ dashcam video of the interaction and claiming Bland had turned a “cordial” stop into a “racial issue.”

“If we didn’t have the video, these officers would have serious allegations against them,” police chief Debra Walthall told Fox News. “Every white officer that stops an African American does not constitute racial profiling.”

Now it is Bland, not the cops, who is facing pressure as nearly 2,500 people have signed a petition urging UNT to fire her.

Notre Dame tutor accused of pressuring students — including athletes — into having sex with her daughter

A student at Notre Dame has accused an academic coach of pressuring him into having sex with her daughter, the New York Daily News reported Sunday night. The student has filed a lawsuit against the school over the matter, alleging she also coerced football and basketball players at the school into having sex with her daughter.

Notre Dame has fired the tutor, with an internal school report obtained by the Daily News saying she violated the school’s “values” and its “discrimination harassment policy.”

In the lawsuit against the school, the unnamed student argues “the tutor orchestrated ‘sexually and racially motivated’ trysts with her daughter by including condoms, transportation and hotel rooms for academic favors,” Nicole Hensley and Reuven Blau of the Daily News report.

“She was exploiting African-American males,” Peter J. Agostino, one of the attorneys who is representing the unnamed student who filed the lawsuit, told the Daily News. “He was invited to the family’s private home to facilitate the relationship.”

According to the lawsuit, the student who filed the lawsuit began a five-month relationship with the academic coach’s daughter after seeking out help from the tutor:

Gas from 2186 sheep forced plane to make emergency landing in Bali after setting off smoke alarms

The Aviation Herald reports the cargo flight from Australia to Kuala Lumpur, with 4 crew and 2186 sheep on-board, was flying just to the south of Indonesia when the smoke alarms sounded on October 26.

Crew on-board SQ-7108 descended the aircraft immediately and diverted to Bali where they landed about 45 minutes later.

Emergency services didn’t find any trace of fire or smoke and identified the cause to be the result of exhaust gasses and manure produced by the sheep.

The plane and its stinky cargo were able to depart the holiday island about three hours later.

Woman pretends to be drunk for social experiment, gets barraged by men

A scantily-clad woman who pretended to be drunk in the street for a social experiment was barraged by men, including one who pinned her in an alley and needed to be pulled away, shocking video shows.

Hidden cameras caught a steady stream of gawking men approaching the apparently sloshed woman in broad daylight in downtown Madrid and offering to buy her more beer.

None offer to help her, and several tried to lure her away from the bustling public space — into alleys and their hotel rooms.

At least one man, a waiter in a nearby restaurant, successfully leads her to a more deserted street and repeatedly tries to kiss her until the actress's male colleague comes to rescue her.

"Hey, why do you take her away," the aggressive man says to him. "You don't take her!"

The man, whose face is blurred out in the video, holds onto the woman by her waist and refuses to let her go.

France is way ahead of us..... WAY ahead!!

The French city of Grenoble wants its citizens to spend less time looking at their phones and more time reading original short stories.

Publishing company Short Edition partnered with the city to install eight vending machines in public locations that dispense short stories instead of snacks and sodas.

The stories are printed on long receipt-like paper and readers can choose between minute-long, three minute-long or five minute-long narratives.

All the stories are written by the Short Edition community and are free for readers.

Short Edition said its members got the idea while they were waiting in front of a chocolate candy machine.

"We said to ourselves that we could do the same thing with good quality popular literature to occupy these little unproductive moments," Christophe Sibieude, co-founder, told Agence-France Presse.

The short story vending machines are currently just part of a pilot project, but they could remain available at their public locations for longer.
