2 Shot in Busy Area of Downtown DC

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/2-shot-near-city-center-in-northwest-dc/2216453/

Two people were shot in a busy area of downtown D.C. Thursday evening.

A male victim was shot in the head at 8th and H streets in Chinatown just after 5 p.m. He is in critical condition.

A second shooting victim was found at 11th and H streets in Northwest.

Police are questioning somebody.

The 700 block of 8th Street, eastbound H Street between 11th Street and 8th Street, and the northbound 700 Block of 11th Street are closed.

I was wondering why the police blocked off streets as I walked past this exact area just now. Damn

Masked neo-Nazis had a surprise march through DC, MPD says masks were legal

After video of the event spread, civil rights activists and legal observers asked how the demonstrators were not in violation of the District’s anti-mask law.

WASHINGTON — In an unannounced demonstration through U.S. Capitol grounds and the National Mall, masked neo-Nazis issued a clarion call to their cause, as stunned tourists and neighbors looked on.

Members of the white nationalist group known as "Patriot Front" shouted chants of "reclaim America," as they crossed Constitution Avenue. Their yells echoed against the stately buildings of the government they seek to remove.

"These people are neo-Nazis from Charlottesville who killed Heather Heyer," a counter-protester said, referring to the 32-year-old activist murdered during the August 2017 Unite the Right march. "Do not let them into D.C."

Patriot Front is defined by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as an image-obsessed hate group, founded in the aftermath of Charlottesville.

Around 150 members of the organization were difficult to miss on an otherwise tranquil afternoon – young and middle-aged men wearing matching khaki pants, white face masks, black sunglasses and khaki hats.

But after video of the event spread on Twitter, civil rights activists and legal observers asked how the demonstrators were not in violation of the District’s anti-mask law.

Artist Arranges Stones In Stunning Patterns On The Beach, Finds It Very Therapeutic (30 Pics)

https://www.boredpanda.com/stone-arrangements-beach-land-art-jon-foreman/

Jon Foreman discovered land art while in college and immediately fell in love with it. He felt that the natural world had more in it to be explored, particularly where he lives, Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Since the area has an extensive coastline, a huge part of Foreman's work revolves around the stones he finds near the sea. Using everything from tiny pebbles to big rocks, the artist surprises beachgoers with mesmerizing arrangements that never cease to amaze.

"I create using many natural materials but stone has proven to be the material which I can manipulate best. Be it color, angle, shape, size, placement, spacing," Foreman told Bored Panda. "Typically, I either start with a rough idea of what I'd like to do or no idea whatsoever! Then I collect what I can carry and start by placing stone by stone, steadily losing myself in the process and disconnecting from the stress of everyday life."

This took some time and talent. More photos and some descriptions at the link.

The myth of the manufacturing jobs renaissance

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/08/economy/manufacturing-jobs/index.html

New York (CNN Business)US manufacturing jobs have disappeared. They won't be coming back.

The Trump administration wants voters to believe in a US manufacturing renaissance -- proof of economic success as America barrels toward election day.

President Trump in his State of the Union address Tuesday once again took credit for "restoring our Nation's manufacturing," claiming that the United States "has gained 12,000 new factories under my administration, with thousands upon thousands of plants and factories being planned or built. We have created over half a million new manufacturing jobs."

Those numbers are largely accurate, and US factory activity expanded in January. But the manufacturing industry is hemorrhaging jobs, losing more than 4 million over the past twenty years. The problem is growth is concentrated in a few outlier industries -- pharmaceuticals, computers, semiconductors -- that boost output while employing only a fraction of the workers in traditional factories.

Those jobs aren't coming back

Despite the White House's promises, nothing will restore a 1960s-style mass employment on the assembly lines. The new manufacturing reality is an industry of specialized high-tech work that requires less manpower, or lower paid, non-union jobs.
The jobs growth Trump cites is coming from emerging US industries -- such as American shale -- or were sparked by a post-recession shopping-spree for items already produced domestically, like cars.

Other industries are hurting.

Video and more info at link. States Trump stole in 2016 have been losing manufacturing jobs. We have a fighting chance to flip them back this year.

A former TSA agent is accused of forcing a woman to expose her breasts during airport screening

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/08/us/tsa-agent-arrest-trnd/index.html

(CNN)A former Transportation Security Administration agent in California has been arrested after allegedly coercing a female passenger into showing her breasts during a security screening.

A criminal complaint was filed against 22-year-old Johnathon Lomeli alleging that he used fraud or deceit to falsely imprison a woman going through the security line at Los Angeles International Airport, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a news release.
Lomeli could not be reached for comment.

Lomeli was working at the document verification podium in June when he asked the woman to stand aside from everyone else in the security screening line because she didn't have any identification, according to the arrest affidavit.

The woman told investigators that Lomeli said she would need to go through a more rigorous screening process to verify her identification. Lomeli asked her to "lift out her shirt and lift out her pants" so he could see if she had anything inside, the affidavit said. After that, a female TSA officer arrived and completed a pat down. But Lomeli said the woman still needed to undergo a more intensive screening process, it said.

Following the pat down, in which the female TSA officer told the woman "she was good," the arrest affidavit said that Lomeli then guided the woman to a nearby elevator on the way to a private screening room.

No, not all TSA agents. But there are definitely some abusers and perverts among them.

Weather Alert: Wind Advisory for DC Area After Tornado Warning

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/weather-alert-intense-wind-cold-front-follow-flood-watch-for-dc-area/2212025/

Severe weather is rippling across parts of the D.C. area, downing trees and power lines and spurring alerts about thunderstorms with tornado risks.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect in parts of Prince George's County. Other earlier severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings have subsided.

Downed trees and wires have been reported in some areas. Montgomery County officials have received reports about traffic light outages and fallen trees and wires. Never try to cross a fallen wire.

One person reported severe weather passing through Leesburg, Virginia, and came outside to find the storm knocked over a tree and a fence.

More Leesburg residents have shared on social media that they saw a tornado. Neither Storm Team4 nor the National Weather Service have yet confirmed that a tornado touched down. Stay with News4 for the latest.

A previous tornado warning in parts of Howard County, Montgomery County and Frederick County in Maryland has ended. But be on alert for more severe weather that could later impact the D.C. area.

Damaging winds will cause some tree branches to fall, the National Weather Service says. Power outages have been reported.

Even those outside the tornado and severe thunderstorm warning zone may have weather worries. Thick fog, rain and thunderstorms may hamper your morning commute before an intense wind kicks up this afternoon and temperatures plummet.

A wind advisory is set to begin around 9 a.m. as a cold front moves in.

Storm Team4 declared Friday a weather alert day. Remember, never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn around, don't drown.

'It's not a turkey call': The cultural significance behind Shakira's meme-worthy 'tongue thing'

‘It’s not a turkey call’: The cultural significance behind Shakira’s meme-worthy ‘tongue thing’ at the Super Bowl

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/02/03/shakira-tongue-superbowl/

The head-turning moment came minutes into Sunday’s Super Bowl LIV halftime show.

Grammy Award-winning singer Shakira had just launched into her hit song “Hips Don’t Lie” when she abruptly leaned down toward one of the cameras at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., stuck out her tongue and let out a high-pitched, warbling cry.

https://twitter.com/cjzero/status/1224139724933279745

The Internet instantly exploded with reactions to the unexpected ululation and its accompanying tongue action. Some viewers were perplexed. Others ridiculed the 43-year-old singer, creating countless memes that likened her to a gleeful turkey, a petulant toddler and characters from Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” cartoon, among a host of other unflattering comparisons.

It didn’t take long, however, for many to point out that the mocking images and commentary were in poor taste.

Like much of Shakira’s widely heralded performance, which was full of nods to her Colombian and Lebanese heritage, the seemingly random trill actually carried deep cultural significance. To those familiar with Middle Eastern culture, the sound was akin to a traditional Arabic expression of joy and celebration called a zaghrouta. It was also interpreted as a reference to the world-famous Carnaval de Barranquilla, which is held in Shakira’s hometown in Colombia.

In case anyone was wondering how a Latina got an Arabic name, her father is Lebanese-American born in NYC.

9 reasons the Indian CEO keeps coming to the rescue

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/02/perspectives/indian-ceo-perspectives/index.html

(CNN Business)IBM tapped Arvind Krishna as its next CEO last week. And this week WeWork confirmed it hired Sandeep Mathrani as its new chief executive.

They join a growing number of global CEOs of Indian origin, according to social media, news reports and online searching (incidentally, Google is run by an Indian).
Here's who I came up with:

Shantanu Narayen, Adobe
Sundar Pichai, Alphabet, the parent company of Google
Satya Narayana Nadella, Microsoft
Rajeev Suri, Nokia
Punit Renjen, Deloitte
Vasant "Vas" Narasimhan, Novartis
Ajaypal "Ajay" Singh Banga, Mastercard
Ivan Manuel Menezes, Diageo
Niraj S. Shah, Wayfair
Sanjay Mehrotra, Micron
George Kurian, NetApp
Nikesh Arora, Palo Alto Networks
Dinesh C. Paliwal, Harman International Industries

A disclaimer that this is hardly complete or exhaustive. Some are the children of Indian immigrants but I include them because (another disclaimer) I am, too, and can attest to inheriting habits and experiences from my parents' generation.

To be sure, there is a risk of reading into one group's success as a case of Indian exceptionalism, which I truly do not believe. Rather, a series of external factors have contributed to the rise of the Indian CEO, which says more about the state of corporate America, a globalized workplace, technological disruption and the leaders who might prevail.

I've broken down some of these factors with the intention that the lessons within might apply to all of us. Among them:
1. An acceptance of change and uncertainty. Every company is grappling with some form of disruption. Now picture India, a country of more than 1 billion people, dozens of languages, uneven infrastructure. At every turn is uncertainty, including whether water will emerge from the tap in the morning to brush your teeth. This breeds both an acceptance of forces beyond our control and the need to persevere, despite them. It allows innovation and patience with process to coexist in a corporate bureaucracy.

2. Seeing around the corner. The ability to predict what's shaping our marketplace is a necessary trait in a leader. Indians are especially equipped, thanks to their embrace of data and constantly, perhaps unconsciously, crafting a Plan B (in case no water comes out).

First we steal your jobs, then we steal your hearts, and then steal your soul until people understand we're not H1Bs.
