U.S. response in Puerto Rico pales next to actions after Haiti quake
After an earthquake shattered Haitis capital on Jan. 12, 2010, the U.S. military mobilized as if it were going to war.
Before dawn the next morning, an Army unit was airborne, on its way to seize control of the main airport in Port-au-Prince. Within two days, the Pentagon had 8,000 American troops en route. Within two weeks, 33 U.S. military ships and 22,000 troops had arrived. More than 300 military helicopters buzzed overhead, delivering millions of pounds of food and water.
No two disasters are alike. Each delivers customized violence that cannot be fully anticipated. But as criticism of the federal governments initial response to the crisis in Puerto Rico continued to mount Thursday, the mission to Haiti an island nation several hundred miles from the U.S. mainland stands as an example of how quickly relief efforts can be mobilized.
By contrast, eight days after Hurricane Maria ripped across neighboring Puerto Rico, just 4,400 service members were participating in federal operations to assist the devastated island, an Army general told reporters Thursday. In addition, about 1,000 Coast Guard members were aiding the efforts. About 40 U.S. military helicopters were helping to deliver food and water to the 3.4 million residents of the U.S. territory, along with 10 Coast Guard helicopters.
Some people act as if America doesn't have the capabilities to get stuff where it needs to go anywhere in the world. There was a time when our military might was used to save people's lives after disasters. But I guess we're under new leadership now with different priorities. Republican candidates always tell us government won't help and after they get elected they prove it.
Photo of Trump Tower steak dish gets roasted on the internet
A photo showing a new, mouthwatering steak dish at Trump Tower in Chicago had Twitter users gagging Tuesday with one person calling it an idiots version of haute cuisine.
The piece of steak on the lower right hand corner looks like a festering wound, tweeted one disgusted user.
Looks like its been eaten once already, said another person.
Chris Booty added, Even the bloody cauliflower has been spray-tanned.

What sort of people pay money to eat this garbage? The above is in Chicago, where midwesterners know steak.
Anyway, a friendly reminder that his DC hotel charges $24 for their cheapest cocktail and $8 for a Bud Light. People who go to his shitty hotels and pay these prices make me worry for the future of humanity.

Robinhood co-founders want everyone in the stock market
Robin Hood stole from the rich to give to the poor. Or so the folk tale goes.
Baiju Bhatt and Vlad Tenev had that idea in mind when they decided to launch their investing app, Robinhood. The app allows anyone to buy and sell stocks without fees. No more paying a broker or being charged for each trade.
"There's a lot of wealth being created on Wall Street and it was coming to the top 1%," Vlad told CNNMoney. "The name Robinhood is very aspirational to us because it's a little bit rebellious. We understand that not everything is right with the financial industry. It's been unfair. It's not been treating people really well."
The idea of lowering the entry cost to trading on the stock market seems to be working.
Robinhood recently got $110 million in Series C funding. It's valued at about $1.3 billion and its user base is made up mostly of young Americans.
You don't have to be wealthy to invest. This is an interesting idea that's worth looking into. The fact that these 2 guys are children of immigrants is also why certain people don't want dangerous ideas like these to take root in America and want to greatly reduce even legal immigration.
But even the large well established mutual fund companies like Vanguard have minimums as low as $1500 to start investing with them.
For the first time, the Marine Corps expects to have a female infantry officer among its ranks
The Marine Corps expects to soon have a female infantry officer, a historic first, following her anticipated graduation Monday from the services grueling Infantry Officer Course, said three military officials with knowledge of the training.
The lieutenant and her male colleagues completed a three-week combat exercise at the services training center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., on Wednesday, the final graded requirement in the 13-week program. The infantry course is widely seen as some of the toughest training in the military, with about 25 percent of all students washing out.
The woman is the first of three dozen women who have attempted the course to pass. She is expected to lead a platoon of infantry Marines in a service that is often seen as the most resistant to full gender integration in the military.
The class will mark its graduation Monday with a warrior breakfast 35 miles south of Washington, in Quantico, Va., where most of the course is conducted, the officials said. All three spoke to The Washington Post on condition of anonymity because the graduation has not yet occurred. All that remains between now and then is returning equipment used during training, and a few administrative days, they said.
Good luck soldier!

Source: Reuters
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that the United States will be forced to totally destroy North Korea unless Pyongyang backs down from its nuclear challenge, mocking North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a rocket man on a suicide mission.

Unless North Korea backs down, he said, We will have no choice than to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime, he said.
