Suquamish Police Dept. doesn't mince words with pointed heat warning

The Suquamish Police Department got right to the point in its Facebook post concerning the upcoming heat wave in Washington state:

"Fair warning: If you leave a child or a pet unattended in a car anywhere in Suquamish or Indianola during this heat spell, we will immediately smash your windows out to save their life, and charge you with endangering the life of an innocent. Your car can reach lethal temperatures in less than 10 minutes in this type of heat. There are zero legitimate reasons to leave a child or pet in a car alone during a record heat wave."


An Excessive Heat Warning was issued for inland Western Washington from Everett south starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday evening. The forecast high for Seattle Tuesday is 89, according to KIRO 7 meteorologists.

Pity poor Anthony Scaramucci: reportedly getting divorced, sacked from his job after a mere 10 days — and now there’s an erroneous report that he’s dead.

The blink-and-you-missed-him former White House communications director is listed as deceased in the new Harvard Law School alumni directory, which arrived in alums’ mailboxes the very week that “The Mooch” became the most talked-about guy in politics. An asterisk by the 1989 graduate’s name indicates that he was reported dead since the last directory, which was published in 2011.

It’s unclear whether he was the victim of a prank — or just a typo. Harvard Law didn’t say, but the school was apparently crimson-faced over the flub. “Regrettably, there is an error in the Harvard Law School alumni directory in the listing for Anthony Scaramucci,” a spokeswoman told us in an emailed statement. “We offer our sincere apologies to Mr. Scaramucci. The error will be corrected in subsequent editions.”

Former President Obama’s communications director took to Twitter on Monday to troll Anthony Scaramucci for being ousted from the White House just 10 days after being hired.

GUILTY: Judge rules in former Sheriff Joe Arpaio's criminal contempt case

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton on Monday found former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio guilty of criminal contempt of court, the culmination of a federal trial that was years in the making.

The six-term sheriff, who was voted out of office in November 2016, is known for, among other things, cracking down on illegal immigration and using controversial “crime suppression sweeps" to round up those suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. Those operations, which went on for years, are what landed him in court.

Although a judge ordered Arpaio to stop the traffic patrols that targeted immigrants, the self-styled “America’s toughest sheriff” did not. Arpaio continued to run those operations for nearly 18 months after that order.

Last May, Judge Murray Snow found Arpaio, now 85, and three of his top aides in civil contempt.

South Carolina Abandons Nuclear Power Plant Project

After working nine years to expand a nuclear power plant in South Carolina, Santee Cooper and SCE&G said Monday they are pulling out of the $14 billion reactor project in Fairfield County in the wake of rising costs, falling demand for energy, construction delays and the bankruptcy of lead contractor Westinghouse this past spring.

SCE&G said in a news relase that a comprehensive review of the Fairfield County nuclear project — a review that began after Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy — caused the company to conclude that finishing the two nuclear reactors “would be prohibitively expensive.”

“We arrived at this very difficult but necessary decision following months of evaluating the project from all persectives,” SCANA Chairman and CEO Kevin Marsh said in the news release.

He said several factors beyond the company’s control have changed since the construction project was launched, including the Westinghouse bankruptcy. Still,. SCANA had considered building just one of the reactors, but rejected that plan after Santee Cooper withdrew from the project.

Los Angeles makes deal to host 2028 Summer Olympics

Los Angeles has reached an agreement with Olympic leaders on terms that will pave the way for hosting the Summer Games in 2028 instead of 2024, according to a source close to the negotiation.

The deal will bring the Olympics back to Southern California for a third time, after Los Angeles hosted the Games in 1984 and 1932. It also opens the door for Paris to host the Games seven years from now.

An International Olympic Committee announcement is expected later today.

This bid competition began as a simple race for 2024, but all that changed in June when the IOC decided that, with two strong candidates, it would take the unusual step of giving 2024 to one city and 2028 to the other.

A transgender candidate takes on Virginias Minister of Private Parts

Traffic. Schools. Jobs. Getting to their jobs, so back to traffic.

That’s what Northern Virginia voters want to talk about when a transgender woman with a rainbow headscarf and slashing black eyeliner knocks on their door.

Which is weird. Because given all the legislation proposed in the Virginia General Assembly on these constituents’ behalf, you’d think the conversations would be nothing but bathrooms, abortions and sex when someone such as Danica Roem shows up.

Roem, 32, has made history, becoming the first openly transgender candidate to win a state primary in Virginia. Now the Democratic nominee is trying to unseat her polar opposite in the 13th District: 25-year incumbent Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William).

And she believes she can win exactly because she has little interest in talking about sex, body parts or gender identity — the meat and potatoes of Marshall’s public life.
