Earlier today, CNN reported on a meeting between Pence and members of the cruise line industry...

that took place today. (It's in their live update roll, which doesn't provide links to most entries: https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-03-07-20-intl-hnk/index.html)

Hopefully, these means that they are removing them from the ship before any next care/quarantine steps, not just parking them out of the way.

Pence said state and federal officials have “developed a plan which is being implemented this weekend to bring the ship into a non-commercial port. All passengers and crew will be tested for the coronavirus and quarantined as appropriate. Those that require additional medical attention will also receive it."

Also, the trade industry guy discussed the costs:

Adam Goldstein, global chairman of the Cruise Lines International Association, told Pence it was the “commitment” of the cruise line industry to “work closely with government and to go above and beyond anything we are currently doing to screen even more stringently to prevent those who should not be allowed to board, to monitor and test and care for those who are on board and to transition and help pay for any sick guests or crew to move to locations staffed and equipped COVID-19 cases."

“We will work aggressively with government to further develop and strengthen all necessary protocols for prevention, for detection and for care,” Goldstein said.

As of right now, the overall case fatality rate for all ages is actually 3.4%..

That's based upon 3,044 confirmed deaths divided by 89,070 cases as of 11:33 PM on 3/1.

The data is from the Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases mapping project being run by the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE).

The data is from various governments' sources, so there may be some consistency questions, but it's the information available.

From the article. Bill McKinnon: "Not just a space potato"

A great line.

Lucky indeed! It took the New Horizons team several years of looking for an object that NH could reach (location and fuel-wise), before they found Ultima Thule. And it turned out to be a bonanza.

Here's all of the news releases for the NY Attorney General's Office..

https://ag.ny.gov/press-releases

James, who has been in office for 13 months, has been one of the lead AG's on most of the lawsuits filed by states against the Trump administration since she was elected. She also put his bogus private foundation out of business.

She also has responsibilities for a lot of things that have nothing to do with Trump, but are important to New Yorkers.

Do you have any specifics on the financial crimes that she (or Manhattan DA Vance, more likely) could be prosecuting right now involving the 'Trump kids', where NY has jurisdiction? If they're doing investigations right now, I doubt that they would be broadcasting any of that in advance. And if any of the crimes involve Trump himself, even indirectly, or foreign governments, the cases will undoubtedly wind up/be slowed down in federal court on a variety of issues, as Vance's current Trump cases have. Election day will arrive sooner.

Trump has to be voted out. No kind of clever silver bullet is likely to get him out of office at this point.

(Also, I don't think that they would prosecute the 'Trump kids' primarily for the purpose of making some kind of deal with Dad Trump for him to resign to protect them. Among other things, he simply would never do so.)

Essex (UK) Police: 39 people found dead in lorry container

Source: BBC

Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.

The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police said the vehicle travelled from Bulgaria and entered the country via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday.

Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, the force said. Police would not say whether any survivors were found in the lorry.

Human trafficking. They are thought to have entered the UK at Anglesey, an island off the coast of Wales, which is about 250 mi from where they were found.

No cause of death has been suggested as of yet.

Awful.

Here's the last 15 hours of the storm in satellite imagery on NOAA's SLIDER browser..

I set it for 30 minute intervals for 15 hours: it looks like it's just whirling in place. It should be just 40 minutes behind; it shows the gorgeous GOES-East satellite imagery in this view. (SLIDER stands for Satellite Loop Interactive Data Explorer in Real-time. It was created by Colorado State with assistance from NOAA agencies)

If it loads, but doesn't run, click play on the top of the left panel. You can also use the arrows next to the play button to advance the imagery. (It might not run on older systems.)

Video: An armed robbery last Sunday in NYC's Diamond District

47th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in NYC is a single block where $ millions of gems are bought and sold in seemingly modest surroundings. There's an extensive police presence there, much of it undercover. Robberies do occur from time to time, but infrequently.

The police released a security video of two suspects, asking for help in identifying them. Between the hats-with-wigs, the gun handling, and the staring at the video camera, this may have been their maiden voyage in a life of crime. Or a school drama club rehearsal.

Happily, there's no report of the employees being hurt.

The problem they have isn't solely that they took donations from Epstein: it's when they took the $$

Their media lab director Joi Ito took money from Epstein after his 2008 conviction and subsequent sentence and I think, after other accusations came out in 2015 concerning his supposedly sending a teenager to have sex with Dershowitz/Pr Andrew. Ito also had Epstein put money in some funds that he manages that invest in tech start-ups.

This was Ito's statement from last week:

The public controversy surrounding Epstein's donations to the lab date to 2015. In an apology he published last week, Ito said he first met Epstein in 2013 at a conference and had, in addition to inviting him to the lab, visited several of Epstein's homes.

"I was never involved in, never heard him talk about, and never saw any evidence of the horrific acts that he was accused of," Ito wrote. He said he regretted allowing Epstein to make donations to the lab and to invest in several of his funds, which invest in tech startups outside of MIT.

Imagine someone rationalizing taking money from Harvey Weinstein because he never appeared naked at a meeting with them personally, and tried to force them to have sex with him.

It's not just Ito/ MIT. Reuters did an article in 2015 following the Dershowitz/Andrew claims in which they spoke to several scientists who took money from him or had some kind of 'friendship' with him. This is from a now-retired highly praised evolutionary biologist from Rutgers.

Robert Trivers, a Rutgers University biologist... said Epstein is a person of integrity who should be given credit for serving time in prison and for settling civil lawsuits brought by women who said they were abused.

“Did he get an easy deal? Did he buy himself a light sentence? Well, yes, probably, compared to what you or I would get, but he did get locked up,” Trivers said. He said he got about $40,000 from Epstein to study the relationship between knee symmetry and sprinting ability.

Trivers also said he believes girls mature earlier than in the past. “By the time they’re 14 or 15, they’re like grown women were 60 years ago, so I don’t see these acts as so heinous,” he said.

I'll give him 'credit' for one thing. He probably came closer to being truthful about why he didn't care about Epstein's actions: a complete lack of regard for the victims that I suspect affected pretty much everyone who looked the other way. Just last month, Epstein's attorney was still referring to them as prostitutes in court, as they had done back in 2008.
