Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.
The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Essex Police said the vehicle travelled from Bulgaria and entered the country via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday.
Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, the force said. Police would not say whether any survivors were found in the lorry.

No cause of death has been suggested as of yet.
Awful.

Here's the last 15 hours of the storm in satellite imagery on NOAA's SLIDER browser..
I set it for 30 minute intervals for 15 hours: it looks like it's just whirling in place. It should be just 40 minutes behind; it shows the gorgeous GOES-East satellite imagery in this view. (SLIDER stands for Satellite Loop Interactive Data Explorer in Real-time. It was created by Colorado State with assistance from NOAA agencies)
If it loads, but doesn't run, click play on the top of the left panel. You can also use the arrows next to the play button to advance the imagery. (It might not run on older systems.)

Video: An armed robbery last Sunday in NYC's Diamond District
47th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in NYC is a single block where $ millions of gems are bought and sold in seemingly modest surroundings. There's an extensive police presence there, much of it undercover. Robberies do occur from time to time, but infrequently.
The police released a security video of two suspects, asking for help in identifying them. Between the hats-with-wigs, the gun handling, and the staring at the video camera, this may have been their maiden voyage in a life of crime. Or a school drama club rehearsal.
Happily, there's no report of the employees being hurt.

The problem they have isn't solely that they took donations from Epstein: it's when they took the $$
Their media lab director Joi Ito took money from Epstein after his 2008 conviction and subsequent sentence and I think, after other accusations came out in 2015 concerning his supposedly sending a teenager to have sex with Dershowitz/Pr Andrew. Ito also had Epstein put money in some funds that he manages that invest in tech start-ups.
This was Ito's statement from last week:
"I was never involved in, never heard him talk about, and never saw any evidence of the horrific acts that he was accused of," Ito wrote. He said he regretted allowing Epstein to make donations to the lab and to invest in several of his funds, which invest in tech startups outside of MIT.

Imagine someone rationalizing taking money from Harvey Weinstein because he never appeared naked at a meeting with them personally, and tried to force them to have sex with him.
It's not just Ito/ MIT. Reuters did an article in 2015 following the Dershowitz/Andrew claims in which they spoke to several scientists who took money from him or had some kind of 'friendship' with him. This is from a now-retired highly praised evolutionary biologist from Rutgers.
Did he get an easy deal? Did he buy himself a light sentence? Well, yes, probably, compared to what you or I would get, but he did get locked up, Trivers said. He said he got about $40,000 from Epstein to study the relationship between knee symmetry and sprinting ability.
Trivers also said he believes girls mature earlier than in the past. By the time theyre 14 or 15, theyre like grown women were 60 years ago, so I dont see these acts as so heinous, he said.
I'll give him 'credit' for one thing. He probably came closer to being truthful about why he didn't care about Epstein's actions: a complete lack of regard for the victims that I suspect affected pretty much everyone who looked the other way. Just last month, Epstein's attorney was still referring to them as prostitutes in court, as they had done back in 2008.

Excellent! Or should I say Incellent?
About 20 seconds in, you might recall the guy with the red cap. I believe that he's the person on the left in the DA's tweet. (They almost looked suave in court. J/K)

10 of them were arrested. 7 took plea bargains. 2 were convicted today. I can't figure out what happened to the last one.
Maximum sentence for their convictions is 15 years, because it involves gang charges. How fucked up do you have to be to throw your life away doing something so stupid.
And to the store owner with the camera capturing the street: thank you.
Manhattan jurors hear closing arguments in Proud Boys gang assault case..
The case went to the jury yesterday (Thursday). According to the Daily News, 10 of these incellent mopes were arrested in connection with their violent actions in October 2018 outside of the Manhattan Republican Club, after a speech had been given there by their founder. Of the 10, 7 pleaded guilty. These are 2 of the remaining ones. (I don't know what the status of the last one is.)
Hare and Kinsman took the stand in their defense Tuesday, where they alleged they were justified in the attack as they felt their lives were in danger.
In response, Steinglass played footage of the aftermath of the brawl where Kinsman can be heard saying, I just stomped the s**t out of him.
Kinsman gave reporters a very fine 'straight armed salute' as he left the courtroom on Wednesday. (Photo in article.)
My personal fav:
None of the victims cooperated with the police. The prosecutor had to rely on the video from that store security camera showing their violent actions.
The closing paragraph...!!!
I can imagine part of this as a voiceover watching Trump leave DC for the last time.
A few days ago, FA45 tweeted some bullshit about NYC/de Blasio/police/crime/anarchy, to which de Blasio responded (among other things):
Jeffrey Epstein spent hours at home during work release, while his minders waited outside...
If you were wondering how Jeff was able to cope with the sudden deprivation of his thrice-daily 'massages', or why something could go wrong with the proposal he offered to the SDNY, well... As more information is coming in, the sheriff's office has now launched an internal investigation as to how the work release was handled.
Jeffrey Epstein spent hours at home during work release, 'responsible for his own transportation' (WPTV)

PBSO launches internal investigation into agency's handling of Jeffrey Epstein case
-The logs from the episode show at least 9 instances when he was allowed to return home for hours at a time whilst his minder waited outside of the house. One deputy wrote in the log that he escorted Epstein to his house and "provided security to prevent unwelcome guests from entering his property."
-Epstein was 'responsible' for his own transportation from jail to the office building where he 'worked'. He was picked up by a limo/driver, and was allowed to travel there without any police surveillance. PBSO's monitoring only picked up again when he reached his office.
-The surveillance at his 'office' consisted of a deputy sitting at a desk in a lobby:
-His 'office' was that of his foundation, The Florida Science Foundation. The entity was established a few months before his sentence began and was dissolved shortly after he was released. He was allowed to use his time there to fulfill a court ordered community service stint! The foundation also wrote checks to the PBSO for a total of $128,000. (WaPo reports that it was reimbursement of costs such as the deputies' salaries whilst 'minding' him, which is typical of these arrangements.)
-There were also some shenanigans concerning his GPS device, furthered discussed at the first link above.
