(JEWISH GROUP) Neo-Nazis, anti-Semitism and the cycle of hatred in America

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!! RESPECT!

I fully expected the recent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., to turn into a hate-filled demonstration against African-Americans. What caught me by surprise, though, was the venomous attack on Jews.

Please allow me to speak candidly about my embarrassing miscalculation of the depth of anti-Semitism that exists today.

As an African-American raised in the South, I am painfully aware of the symbolism behind a statute of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee erected in a public park. However, I did not immediately grasp the Nazi-inspired message behind the chants "blood and soil" and "Jews will not replace us."

Before Charlottesville, some of us assumed that hatred against Jews paled today in comparison to the contempt blacks, Hispanics, Muslims and other minorities face in America.

While there has been an increase in bomb threats against Jewish institutions across America recently, overall anti-Semitic incidents still remain historically low. The most notable rise has been on college campuses, according to the Anti-Defamation League. But these incidents garnered less attention than recent attacks on other groups.

(JEWISH GROUP) All The Swastikas And Broken Glass Since Charlottesville

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!! RESPECT!

On Aug. 14 — two days after the nation watched in horror as hundreds of well-armed neo-Nazis and other white supremacists held a violent rally in Charlottesville, Virginia — a 17-year-old boy in downtown Boston allegedly picked up a rock and threw it through one of the six tall glass towers that make up the New England Holocaust Memorial.

Each tower is made of 22 glass panels and engraved with thousands of numbers representing the 6 million Jews murdered by Nazis during World War II. The rock reduced one of those panels to tiny glass shards strewn across the sidewalk, later swept into dustpans by city workers.

A day later, an unknown person shattered the glass doors at the K’hal Adas Yereim synagogue in Queens, New York — just hours after the nation watched in disbelief as the president of the United States described the white supremacists in Charlottesville as “fine people.” The synagogue is less than 3 miles from the president’s childhood home.

A K’hal Adas Yereim member sent a photo of the shattered doors to the Documenting Hate project, a partnership between ProPublica and numerous news outlets, including HuffPost. A New York City Police Department spokesperson says the department is investigating the incident, but won’t say whether a suspect has been identified.

(JEWISH GROUP) Students suspended, expelled for playing 'Jews vs. Nazis' beer pong

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!! RESPECT!

ATLANTA - Students from an Atlanta private school are facing disciplinary action after a photo posted online shows them playing a game of "Jews vs. Nazis" beer pong at an off-campus house party.

Channel 2 Action News confirmed the photo shows students of the Lovett School playing the game earlier this month.

The picture clearly shows cups filled with beer in the shape of a Jewish star on one side of the table and a Nazi swastika on the other.

Five students were suspended and the student who set up the game and took the photo was expelled after Rabbi Peter Berg alerted the elite prep school's head master of the incident.

“The fact that someone could even conceive of such a game, and then play it and think it’s funny is beyond words,” Berg said.

(JEWISH GROUP) Emblems of Anti-Semitism

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!! RESPECT!

They went to Charlottesville, they said, to peacefully protest the removal of a statue of Confederate War General, Robert E. Lee; they were simply exercising their constitutional rights to free speech and assembly. Western civilization itself, they said, was at stake. So they rallied defenders of our culture, our country and our heritage.

Yet the actual “protest” was curiously quiet about the removal of a statue. And when you saw their Nazi symbols and KKK hoods, read their hate signs and tweets, and heard their vicious chants, it became abundantly clear that this was not intended to preserve a bit of history.

This was anti-Semitism pure and simple.

Again, and to repeat, the rally was not about the preservation of monuments, it was about Jews. Neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and white nationalists alike chanted “Jews will not replace us” and “blood and soil” (the English translation of the Nazi slogan “blut und boden”). They carried banners with swastikas; one sign said, “Jews are Satan’s children.” Nazi websites called for the burning of the Charlottesville synagogue. In interviews, one the protestors asserted that, “This city is run by Jewish communists and criminal niggers.” Others complained that Jews control the media, American politics, and the worldwide financial order. Under cover of the constitution, their flags, confederate and Nazi, were as much or more weapons of anti-Semitic hate as symbols of the white race.

While much recent hate talk is aimed at Muslims, anti-Semitism is sadly on the rise. The Anti-Defamation League’s most recent audit reported an increase in anti-Semitic incidents for three straight years (2014-2016). They reported a shocking 86% increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes in the first four months of 2017. According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2015, more that 50% of all victims of religious hate crimes are Jews. From bomb threats to toppled tombstones, anti-Semitism is on the rise.

(JEWISH GROUP) Dont Come For Jews On Social Justice If You Dont Know What Youre Talking About

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP! RESPECT!

I don’t know of many, or any, instances of Asian groups supporting Jewish people in instances of anti-Semitism.

But I don’t assume that means Asian communities working against anti-Semitism don’t exist. And I certainly don’t assume Asians are anti-Semites. I assume that I am an ignorant person.

---snip---

Maningding’s site (which I have enjoyed countless times) offers funny, accessible takes on issues of racial injustice, specifically injustice towards Asian people. He clarified in the post that while he doesn’t “condone anti-Semitism,” he does not need to respond to incidents of it because he “never see[s] statements from Jewish orgs” condemning instances of racism perpetrated by Jewish celebrities like Lena Dunham and Adam Sandler.

He concluded:

“ So what’s up? Why do Jewish activists only show up when they want our help, yet they never come and check their problematic peers? They want to be included in the umbrella of POC yet sooooo many Jewish activists won’t even acknowledge how whiteness and Jewish identities intersect.”

Interesting article. I have seen this before with other groups.

(JEWISH GROUP) Anti-Semitism alive and too well

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!! RESPECT!

Blaming the up-tick in anti-Semitism in the U.S. on one Israeli teenager (or the Israeli government) ignores a dangerous trend that has included an emboldened white-supremacist movement and the most recent rally in Charlottesville Va., in which alt-right protesters carried Nazi flags and shouted anti-Semitic slogans, and a neo-Nazi drove into a crowd, killing one and injuring many.

Anti-Semitism is real and should be everyone’s concern. It has been used for centuries as a divide-and-rule tactic to keep us from challenging and changing an unjust economic system.

I wasn't real sure about the policy for posting an editorial, especially one this short, but it is a good one!!! An uncomfortable truth for many!

(JEWISH GROUP) The dark political history of American anti-Semitism

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!! RESPECT!

When hundreds of white supremacists bearing torches and giving the Nazi salute descended upon the University of Virginia’s campus on August 11, they began a chant that would have been entirely unrecognizable to the figures immortalized in the statues they sought to preserve: “Jews will not replace us!”

Neither the Confederacy nor the first iteration of the Ku Klux Klan — founded in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War to terrorize newly freed blacks — were very concerned with the few Jews then living in the South. (In fact, Jefferson Davis appointed the first Jewish cabinet member in the western hemisphere, Judah Benjamin.)

Yet 50 years after the end of the Civil War, virulent anti-Semitism became intertwined with white supremacy, and these views seeped into new American laws that targeted Jews. The restrictive immigration laws of 1921 and 1924, written by eugenicists and cheered by white supremacists, came a decade before the Nazi Party took power in Germany. These laws were still on the books in the 1930s and 1940s, severely limiting the number of Jews who would be able to find refuge from Nazism.

The Ku Klux Klan reemerged in 1915, while Woodrow Wilson, a segregationist, sat in the White House and “Birth of a Nation” filmgoers gave standing ovations when triumphant Klansmen galloped onto the screen.

(JEWISH GROUP) With White Nationalism Emboldened, American Jews Consider Exit Strategies

THIS IS THE JEWIHS GROUP! RESPECT!

WASHINGTON — The day after the election in 2016, Nancy Goldstein, a 55-year-old Brooklyn writer and academic who has never been to Israel, opened up her computer and began the process of applying for Israeli citizenship.

In Washington, D.C., 49-year-old entrepreneur David Bennahum began the complex process of moving his family and startup business to Montreal, finally establishing all four of them and the company there in July.

The one thing they had in common: They are both Jewish. And both had looked at the campaign of Donald J. Trump and decided they would be safer as Jews and as liberals if they had an exit strategy from America.

The question of living as a Jew in America under Trump has provoked varying degrees of anxiety in the year since he tweeted out an anti-Semitic meme about Hillary Clinton — the infamous Star of David tweet — and then sought to defend it as a “Sheriff’s Star.” That’s when I first started to hear the half-panicked, half-joking conversations about exit strategies if Trump won and considerations about where to go if America were ever to become unsafe. A friend whose grandparents had fled Germany talked to her mother about going back there. A half-Jewish, half-Australian friend decided to pursue — and ultimately secured — dual citizenship and an Australian passport.

Can't say I am surprised. I am also not surprised by Jews who are finally waking up to an uncomfortable truth. Of course, there are those who think Jews aren't a "real" minority and discussion of anti-Semitism should be on their (non-Jewish) terms! They, ignorantly (or stupidly) think the only privileges which exist in this country come in "white" or "male" variety and completely ignore, sidestep, or diminish privileges such as "heterosexual", "cisgender", and yes, "Christian", among others. It explains why more than a few supposed allies to diversity and equality completely ignored the anti-Semitism from Charlottesville, and when it became obvious they could no longer ignore it, decided to complain about Jews who didn't preform to their (again, NON-JEWISH) standards. The Jews ranged from Sanders to the Kushners. It also explains why more than a few feel "privileged" to come into Jewish spaces and say whatever they fucking please because "Jews aren't a minority worthy of respect"!

(JEWISH GROUP) Poll: 1 in 3 UK Jews considered emigrating over anti-Semitism

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP! RESPECT!

37% of over 7,000 respondents say they have been concealing signs that would indicate that they’re Jewish; 767 anti-Semitic attacks in first half of 2017

The findings are part of a report published Sunday by the Campaign Against Antisemitism watchdog group, which conducted since 2015 interviews with more than 10,000 British Jews together with the YouGov market research company.

In interviews conducted in 2016 and 2017 with a combined sample population of 7,156 respondents, 37 percent of them said they have been concealing in public signs that would indicate that they are Jewish.

Only 59% of the respondents since 2015 said they feel welcome in the United Kingdom and 17% said they feel unwelcome.

Only 39% of respondents from 2015 onward said they trust justice authorities to prosecute perpetrators of anti-Semitic hate crimes.
