WATERLOO, ILL. (AP) Suddenly being swallowed up by the earth on a golf course's fairway drove a wedge between Mark Mihal and a stellar round.
The 43-year-old mortgage broker was counting his blessings Tuesday and nursing a dislocated shoulder sustained four days earlier when he tumbled into an 18-foot deep sinkhole on the 14th hole of the Annbriar Golf Club near Waterloo, Ill., just southeast of St. Louis.
Friends managed to hoist Mihal to safety with a rope after about 20 minutes. But the experience gave him quite a fright, particularly following the much-publicized recent death of a man in Florida who died when his bedroom fell into a sinkhole. That man's body hasn't been found.

Share of Homes With Guns Shows 4-Decade Decline
The gun ownership rate has fallen across a broad cross section of households since the early 1970s, according to data from the General Social Survey, a public opinion survey conducted every two years that asks a sample of American adults if they have guns at home, among other questions.
The rate has dropped in cities large and small, in suburbs and rural areas and in all regions of the country. It has fallen among households with children, and among those without. It has declined for households that say they are very happy, and for those that say they are not. It is down among churchgoers and those who never sit in pews.
The household gun ownership rate has fallen from an average of 50 percent in the 1970s to 49 percent in the 1980s, 43 percent in the 1990s and 35 percent in the 2000s, according to the survey data, analyzed by The New York Times.

So with all the talk of gun sales at an all time high, this must mean that someone has a whole lot of guns.
Question about military jet fly overs at events
I saw the start of the prelude to the NASCAR race today with them all wrapped in the flag and then the fly over. It led me to think, who is paying for those excursions by the Air Force jets?
Are we the tax payer paying for these rah-rah moments for the good ol' boys?
Iconic - Beautiful Post Offices going on the auction block
Many buildings currently owned by the Postal Service are for sale, or are being considered for sale. Preservation groups say some of the buildings are architecturally significant and that their design elements and historic features should be protected.

This is what the right wing attempt to privatize our postal system is doing. These are historic structures and have been a significant fixture in these communities.
Did Lindsey Graham just blink?
GOP's Graham on Obama dinner: 'The election is over'
By Kasie Hunt and Mike Viqueira, NBC News
Lindsey Graham took the lead on the guest list. Barack Obama extended the invitations. And on Wednesday night, after weeks of gridlock, a dozen Republican senators are dining out with the president.
"We need to stop the campaign. The election is over," Graham said Wednesday. "If we never talk to each other, I know exactly what's going to happen, this country is going to fail."
So far, the Republicans who've been invited are giving Obama the benefit of the doubt -- even if they don't want to elaborate.
<snip>
"How do you say no to the president of the United States who would like to have dinner with some of your colleagues? You don't," Graham said.

So does this mean they are no longer going to say no to Obama or are they just looking for a free meal?
It makes you wonder why do they bother...
When you put in perspective, all the value of the corporate loopholes vs. those that actually help people who need help, it makes you wonder why are they going after this little small amount when there are so much bigger fish to catch.

Boehner tells Obama 'You got your tax increase'
Boehner is trying to claim the expiration of the bu$h tax cuts and the Social Security Tax Holiday as a tax increase.
The president says we have to have another tax increase to avoid the sequester, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said of the hefty and indiscriminate spending cuts. Well, Mr. President, you got your tax increase. It's time to cut spending.
