The Siberian crater saga is more widespread — and scarier — than anyone thought

Caused by "Global Warming" otherwise known as Climate Change.

The Washington Post
At the end of last summer came news of a bizarre occurrence no one could explain. It was a massive crater that just one day showed up. Early estimates placed it at nearly 100 feet in diameter, nestled deep in Siberia’s Yamal Peninsula, a place called “the ends of the Earth.”

The saga deepened. The Siberian crater wasn’t alone. There were two more, ratcheting up the tension in a drama that hit its climax as a probable explanation surfaced. Global warming had thawed the permafrost, which had caused methane trapped inside the icy ground to explode. “Gas pressure increased until it was high enough to push away the overlaying layers in a powerful injection, forming the crater,” one German scientist said at the time.

Now, however, researchers fear there are more craters than anyone knew — and the repercussions could be huge. Russian scientists have now spotted a total of seven craters, five of which are in the Yamal Peninsula. Two of those holes have since turned into lakes. And one giant crater is rimmed by a ring of at least 20 mini-craters, the Siberian Times reported. Dozens more Siberian craters are likely still out there, said Moscow scientist Vasily Bogoyavlensky of the Oil and Gas Research Institute, calling for an “urgent” investigation.

He fears that if temperatures continue to rise — and they were five degrees higher than average in 2012 and 2013 — more craters will emerge in an area awash in gas fields vital to the national economy. “It is important not to scare people, but to understand that it is a very serious problem and we must research this,” he told the Siberian Times. “… We must research this phenomenon urgently, to prevent possible disasters.”

For you next argument with the Climate Deniers claiming this winter disproves Global Warming...

How the warming Arctic might be behind Boston's deep freeze

A strange thing happened here in Boston over the weekend: The temperature got above freezing.

The massive dumps of snow here this winter have been bad enough, but it's the cold that's really done us in, an unbroken stretch of frigid weather that’s made Massachusetts feel more like Montreal — or Anchorage.

And Rutgers University climate scientist Jennifer Francis has a counterintuitive explanation for all the cold: It's the warming Arctic.

More specifically, Francis thinks the warming Arctic is causing the jet stream to slow down, get a lot more loopy, which lets big masses of frigid air slip south.

The jet stream is that powerful, high-altitude circulation system that carries weather around the Northern Hemisphere. The main fuel behind it is the difference in temperature between the Arctic and the warmer regions to the south.

“When the Arctic is warming so fast, that means there's less fuel driving the jet stream,” Francis says. “When the jet stream has less fuel it flows more slowly, and it tends to take these big north-south dips.”

The northeastern US just happens to be in the path of one of those big dips this year, she says, “and that’s when we get our cold winters." The United Kingdom has also seen extremely strong and persistent storms the past two winters. But she also thinks there’s a lot more going on than just a lot of cold and snow in New — or old — England.

The Arctic is warming causing the dips in the Jetstream and giving us the snow storms and frigid weather.

Mother Jones Concerned For Bureau Chief’s Safety After Bill O’Reilly threatens him

Mother Jones Concerned For Bureau Chief’s Safety After Bill O’Reilly Calls For Him To Be In “Kill Zone”

The editors in chief at Mother Jones this morning sent this email/letter to Fox News Channel’s primetime star Bill O’Reilly and one of the network’s communications execs, saying it is concerned for its Washington bureau chief’s safety after O’Reilly called for him to be “in the kill zone.”

Mother Jones writer David Corn yesterday responded to Bill O’Reilly’s comments on the magazine’s piece about O’Reilly’s claims regarding his work for CBS News covering the Falklands war, saying “A discerning reader of Deadline can easily see that Bill O’Reilly is hiding behind name-calling, rather than dealing with the substance of the matter,” and that Mother Jones sent O’Reilly a long list of detailed questions about his comments regarding his experience as a war reporter. ” He and Fox News declined to respond. Instead, O’Reilly hurls invective, seemingly to distract,” Corn told Deadline.

“It’s a total hit piece,” Bill O’Reilly told Deadline about the report Corn wrote in Mother Jones about O’Reilly’s claims in re his coverage of Falklands war. In the post, Corn said some of O’Reilly’s stories “don’t withstand scrutiny — even claiming he acted heroically in a war zone that he apparently never set foot in.”

O’Reilly blasted the piece to other news outlets as well, and is continuing to do so today — during which he has been quoted by at least one outlet, TV Newser, as saying he expected those reporters with whom he spoke to “verify what I’m saying, because it’s easily verifiable, then I expect David Corn to be in the kill zone.”

Oklahoma kids don't need no history...

Oklahoma Lawmakers Vote Overwhelmingly To Ban Advanced Placement U.S. History

An Oklahoma legislative committee overwhelmingly voted to ban Advanced Placement U.S. History class, persuaded by the argument that it only teaches students “what is bad about America.” Other lawmakers are seeking a court ruling that would effectively prohibit the teaching of all AP courses in public schools.

Oklahoma Rep. Dan Fisher (R) has introduced “emergency” legislation “prohibiting the expenditure of funds on the Advanced Placement United States History course.” Fisher is part of a group called the “Black Robe Regiment” which argues “the church and God himself has been under assault, marginalized, and diminished by the progressives and secularists.” The group attacks the “false wall of separation of church and state.” The Black Robe Regiment claims that a “growing tide of special interest groups indoctrinating our youth at the exclusion of the Christian perspective.”

Fox Affiliate Reported Obama as Rape Suspect

Mistakenly?

Fox 5 San Diego apologized for mistakenly portraying President Barack Obama as a rape suspect during a news broadcast Friday.

Instead of a picture of the suspect in a sexual assault at San Diego State University, a photo of the President with the text "NO CHARGES" ran over the shoulder of anchor Kathleen Bade as she reported that there would be no charges filed in the case.

The shot was noticed quickly by the newsroom, assignment editor Mike Willie told the Times of San Diego.

"Yeah, there was an accident when they had an over-the-shoulder [display]," Wille said. "It wasn't on purpose."

The error was followed by an on-air apology from fellow anchor Misha DiBono, seen in the video.

Senior vice president of corporate relations for Tribune Media Gary Weitman told the Times, "I want to let you know that the station will be running an on-air correction and an apology tonight; please be sure to watch for it."

Good news

I learned last week that I get to keep my job and today I got to give my team the news that they are going to get to keep their jobs.

The company I work for is splitting and restructuring employees as they separate the business. Restructuring always equates to people loosing their jobs. My boss was one of the one that is loosing his job as part of this so, as they moved down the food chain, I was extremely worried. So much so that I was actively searching for a new job.

Last week I was asked to stay with the new company after the split and then today, I was given word that I could keep my team of employees. I couldn't wait to talk to each of them and give them the good news.

Now, I have to decide what to do with that job interview I have tomorrow. I just think how it could have been the other way, out of a job and no prospective offers in the wings.

A message to Brian Williams and all Main Stream Media reporters

I don't believe you, I have not believed anything any of you have said since you all lied to get us into war in Afghanistan.

Weather you were used are were part of the charade, you lost all credibility and have done nothing to restore it. You intentionally misled an entire nation and promoted the lies of a regime which took control under questionable means which of course you allowed to happen.

In the democratic republic, the media was supposed to be the guardians of the truth, the barrier between an administration or Congress that overstepped its boundaries. That is how the founding fathers intended it, that is the true purpose of the First Amendment, to protect the media.

You all failed at your duties, you failed the American People and you failed humanity.

How do you restore your credibility? Don't know if that is entirely possible. To begin, you can name those who were responsible for the lies that drove us to an needless, useless, endless war. If it stops with you, which I don't believe it does, then speak it, if it leads to dragging current and former leaders through the mud, then it must be done, they deserve it. You OWE Humanity and you owe history this.

Surprise! - Brian Williams NBC Anchor lied...

Brian Williams Admits He Never Came Under Fire in Iraq: "I Apologize"

After twelve years, Brian Williams is coming clean, admitting the helicopter he traveled in during NBC's coverage of the 2003 Iraq invasion never once came under fire, despite Williams' story to the contrary.

On Jan. 30, NBC Nightly News posted a video of Williams to Facebook, in which Williams recounts the story during a news segment. Williams references "a terrible moment a dozen years back during the invasion of Iraq, when the helicopter we were traveling in was forced down after being hit by an RPG."

A user by the name of Lance Reynolds, who purported to have served in Iraq during the incident in question, subsequently commented on the video, writing, "Sorry dude, I don't remember you being on my aircraft."

Reynolds added, "I do remember you walking up about an hour after we had landed to ask me what had happened. Then I remember you guys taking back off in a different flight of Chinooks from another unit and heading to Kuwait to report your 'war story' to the Nightly News."

Willams responded to the comment via his verified account, writing, "To Joseph, Lance, Jonathan, Pate, Michael and all those who have posted: You are absolutely right and I was wrong.
