1 dead from coronavirus in King County (WA), health officials confirm. Details on 2 others now

https://komonews.com/news/local/1-dead-from-coronavirus-in-king-county-health-officials-confirm

Officials plan to hold a press conference at 1 p.m. with more details.

The Department of Health announced Friday evening two presumably new cases of coronavirus, including a school-aged student in Snohomish County.

The department said the results from the individuals' tests came back "preemptively positive," but are pending official confirmation from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.

A student from Jackson High School in Mill Creek with no travel history is one of the people infected with the COVID-19 virus. The student started feeling ill Monday with body aches, chills and a headache, the department said. Health officials said the student returned to school when he started feeling better, before results Friday revealed the child was sick with coronavirus.

Child isn’t dead. Hopefully recovers. Article mentioned a man had died

Trump Towers Kabul??? U.S., Taliban sign historic peace deal

https://www.upi.com/amp/Top_News/World-News/2020/02/29/US-Taliban-sign-historic-peace-deal/9621582982385/

The agreement includes a timeline for the U.S. military withdrawal, which includes a deadline of 135 days for about 4,400 troops to depart. That will leave the United States with some 8,600 troops in Afghanistan.

The goal is for there to be a full withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops after 14 months, but that's conditional upon the Taliban meeting certain security requirements.

The United States "will closely watch the Taliban's compliance with their commitments, and calibrate the pace of our withdrawal to their actions," said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who attended the signing in Doha, Qatar.

"This is how we will ensure that Afghanistan never again serves for international terrorists," he added.

And we thought the neocons had their heads in the clouds....

Pompeo on Iran:
QUESTION: My question, again: How do you stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon?

SECRETARY POMPEO: We’ll stop them.

QUESTION: How?

SECRETARY POMPEO: We’ll stop them.

4 people under investigation for coronavirus in Florida

https://www.wesh.com/article/4-people-under-investigation-for-coronavirus-florida/31162363
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. —
More than a dozen people have been tested for the coronavirus in Florida and four people are currently under investigation for the virus, the state surgeon general said Friday.

Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees said 15 people in Florida have been tested for the virus to date, but all of those test results were negative. Four people are currently under investigation for coronavirus.

A person who is under investigation means this is an individual who is suspected of having the coronavirus. They’ve been to one of these high-risk areas, they have respiratory symptoms,” Rivkees said.

No coronavirus testing kits available now in Florida

The Florida Department of Health has set up a website with the latest information about the coronavirus.

U.S. oil futures suffer largest weekly percentage loss in over a decade

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/global-oil-benchmark-falls-to-2-12-year-low-as-coronavirus-sparks-demand-fears-2020-02-28?mod=home-page

Oil futures finished sharply lower on Friday, with U.S. benchmark prices down over 16% for the week, the largest weekly decline in more than 11 years, with the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic around the world expected to significantly dent demand for crude.

The oil market looks like it’s pricing in “demand grinding to a halt,” Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at The Price Futures Group, told MarketWatch. “It’s the wild west in crude at this point, and we are at the mercy of the market sentiment.”

The April WTI and Brent crude contracts marked their lowest settlements since December 2018.

May Brent crude BRNK20, +0.44%, which is now the front month, dropped $2.06, or 4%, to $49.67 a barrel—the lowest most-active contract price since July 2017.

Well, at least it will be cheaper driving around to get away from the virus....

CDC transfers coronavirus patient to San Mateo County (Sounds bad)

https://m.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/San-Mateo-county-coronavirus-repatriated-patient-15092052.php

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is transferring a person who tested positive for COVID-19 to an undisclosed location in San Mateo County, officials said Friday.

San Mateo County Health issued a statement saying it would not be releasing any more details on the patient at this time.

San Mateo County's Health Officer Dr. Scott Morrow said the county's focus is changing from a "containment strategy" to one of "community mitigation," which means taking steps to lessen the impact.

"I share the concerns of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): We all need to be prepared for COVID-19 to spread within the United States," Dr. Morrow said in a statement. "Our lives may be significantly disrupted by the measures needed to respond to a global pandemic."

Dr. Morrow added that the risk to the community remained low.

Good news? China gets back to work -- sort of -- as number of new COVID-19 cases wanes

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/china-gets-back-to-work-sort-of-as-number-of-new-covid-19-cases-wanes-2020-02-28

Signs of life are emerging in China’s coronavirus-stricken economy — even as the epidemic is exploding around the world.

A number of key metrics of economic health have ticked up in the last week or two. Workers are returning, factories are firing back up, and even consumer-facing businesses are opening their doors.

...

First, the caveats: The resumption in activity has been slow, though steady. And China’s economy could take a second-round beating if the virus flares up again locally. But, for now, undeniable signs of activity are springing up.

Over 43% of small and midsize enterprises in China’s manufacturing sector had resumed production as of Wednesday, Zhang Kejian, deputy minister of industry and information technology, told state media. This is crucial for these smaller firms, as many said in a recent survey that they could survive for only one to two months on their savings.

Hopefully this doesn’t cause an increase of cases as people start interacting more

Dang... 2-year Treasury yield on pace for biggest daily drop since March 2009

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/2-year-treasury-yield-on-pace-for-biggest-daily-drop-since-march-2009-2020-02-28?mod=markets

In a sign of mounting expectations for the Federal Reserve to slash rates this year, the 2-year Treasury note yield is on pace for its biggest one-day decline since March 18, 2009. The short-dated maturity TMUBMUSD02Y, -20.27% was down 19.7 basis points to 0.906% on Friday. Bond prices move in the opposite direction of yields. Sensitive to bets on the direction of interest rates, the 2-year note yield has plunged more than 50 basis points over the last two weeks as traders in the fed funds futures market have priced in at least one quarter percentage point rate cut in March, CME Group data show.

"Honest Election Project" trying to purge voter rolls in three states

Got the info from Wash Times

The rolls in some counties of Colorado, Florida and Michigan are suspiciously high, sometimes exceeding the number of voting-age adults there, said the Honest Election Project.

The group sent letters to the secretaries of state in Colorado, Florida and Michigan — each a crucial 2020 presidential battleground — demanding they take legally required steps to ensure their lists are accurate and inform the group of the measures they have taken before November.

...

The Honest Election Project’s action stems from voters in the three states who came forward to serve as litigants with standing for legal action in each state. They are being represented by the law firm Consovoy McCarthy.

...

William Consovoy, a founding partner of the firm, previously represented President Trump in personal matters.

How to use Clorox wipes (and how to wash your hands)

Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes

Wipe surface to be disinfected.

Keep surface wet for 4 minutes.

Let surface dry.

For highly soiled surfaces, clean excess dirt first.

For items that come in contact with food or mouths (like baby bottles or toys), rinse with warm water and let air-dry.

CDC suggests helping to reduce your risk of infection by doing the following:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Additionally, if you have cold-like symptoms, you can help protect others by doing the following:

Stay home while you are sick.
