Yeah....about the people behind the My Pillow guy, pushing oleandrin derivatives...

4 facts about oleandrin, an unproven coronavirus treatment reportedly pitched to Trump
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/4-facts-about-oleandrin-an-unproven-coronavirus-treatment-reportedly-pitched-to-trump-2020-08-17

So where is the COVID-cure buzz coming from? A July 2020 study out of Texas showed that, in test tubes, oleandrin could inhibit the coronavirus in monkey kidney cells. But this study has not been peer-reviewed or published yet. And while Phoenix Biotechnology exec Whitney also told Axios on Saturday that “we have provided” human clinical evidence to the FDA, he would not share what that evidence is. The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) also conducted some preliminary testing of oleandrin against SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19). The results were “inconclusive,” a spokesperson told Axios.

“You’d certainly want to see more work done on this before even contemplating a human trial,” Professor Sharon Lewin, the director of the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at the University of Melbourne, told Axios.

What’s more, one of the authors of the Texas study, Robert Newman, is the chairman of the Phoenix Biotechnology advisory board — the company developing the oleandrin product.

The slow dismantling of the old Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City has begun

The slow dismantling of the old Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City has begun
https://www.inquirer.com/news/trump-plaza-atlantic-city-casino-open-demolition-20200818.html

ATLANTIC CITY — The process of eliminating the former Trump Plaza casino from the Atlantic City skyline will still end with the boom of an implosion sometime next year.

But this month, a demolition crew from Pennsylvania arrived and began the slow work of gutting the interior and taking down portions of the building itself in preparation for the implosion, tentatively scheduled for early 2021.

On Monday, a small group of evangelical marchers, urging people to repent, noisily walked by along their route on Pacific Avenue with signs and bullhorns, an event apparently unrelated to the demolition of the once-iconic casino.

Demolition equipment from Haines & Kibblehouse and large mounds of dirt were on the property. Demolition had begun at part of a lower level next to one of the towers.

Rolls-Royce to close Prince George County (Virginia) factory, laying off nearly 300 workers

Damn. A lot of memories from my year and a half there. Worked on some of the automation and HMIs for various pieces of equipment. And many wonderful people will be affected by this

Oh, fyi, my time there was about 5-6 years ago when the newer side was being commissioned

https://richmond.com/business/rolls-royce-to-close-prince-george-county-factory-laying-off-nearly-300-workers/article_f8f99f4d-9602-5d3b-81d9-e6212ba398f6.html

The company plans to shutter the factory in the Crosspointe office park near Interstate 295 by mid-next year, putting 280 employees out of work, a spokesman for Rolls-Royce North America confirmed Saturday.

The job losses come on top of 120 layoffs at the factory — the first Rolls-Royce manufacturing facility built from the ground up in the U.S. — that took place in June.

The factory, which opened in 2011 on a 1,000-acre site in Prince George, had reached peak employment of about 400 people last year. It makes precision aircraft components such as rotative discs and turbine blades.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a historic collapse in civil aviation, which will take several years to recover. As a result, we’ve had to make difficult, but necessary, decisions to protect the future of our business,” Rolls-Royce North America spokesman Don Campbell said in a statement.

Which staffer drew the short straw tonight?

I wonder who drew the short straw tonight to keep
Twitler from tweeting his usual hateful crap since his “best friend”, his brother whom he never mentioned, just died and the optics would be bad

Feels later. My mind was going stream of consciousness

Feels later. Been listening to U2 X Radio. I love how they bring on friends and influences and even random fans to play songs and talk about their inspirations from the band and songs/artists that influenced the band

Gavin Friday, along with Guggi, has been friends with Bono since their teen years. He had some eccentric picks

Tom Waits with a version of Heigh Ho that would give Nick Cave the creeps. And Sinead O’Connor version of Some Day My Prince Will Come. Yeah. Disney tracks. Like never heard before!

And my son had crawled up and wanted his nightly head and back scratching.

Then Bono with an old Irish sailing song, A Dying Sailor to his Shipmates and then I skipped to what was live and it was a live version of Stay (Faraway, So Close) - which, btw, is an amazing film from Wim Wenders (if you saw City of Angels with Nicolas Cage, think its prequel)

Then a throwback, Seconds. And I think to myself I was just a couple years older than my son when that came out

Then I hear...the deeper, slower breathing

I look down and see my son is out.

And I wonder. How many kids these days get into music and have it become part of them, in a way, these days. So much music is passing these days. It’s a quick hit of a song. It’s not a series of songs that make up a side of an album, or the B side that becomes a fave moreso than the “hit” on the other side. And rock operas? Or albums with a story? Those days are gone. Long gone.

What was the last? Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut? A decent follow up but certainly paling in comparison to The Wall

The Joshua Tree has a vibe that evolves thru it. So did Rattle and Hum and even Achtung Baby but after that, even U2 wasn’t telling a story with an album

I think the last album that, to me, told a story was The Winter of Mixed Drinks from Frightened Rabbit. After Scott Hutchison’s death a couple years ago, I keep hearing that album as a cry for help from him.

Where was I. Ah. Yeah. I used to put some albums on the ol console and just sit in the living room and listen and let my mind interpret the lyrics as I read along with the liner notes. The Wall. Geez. How many times did I play that over and over...the introvert in me sinking into each song like a warm blanket

Then War from U2. Raw. Passion. Rock. Anger. Despair. Hope. No Ireland was much different in those days. Bombings seeming weekly. So many wasted lives. Those bloody Sundays

Then Unforgettable Fire came out. A whole new level. Boy and War were raw and powerful. October, the sophomore effort, felt disjointed and esoteric with sprinkles of that rawness. But Unforgettable Fire brought along Lanois (one of the great producers...with U2 for a few decades. And he did Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball, Willie Nelson’s Teatro and Last of the Mohicans soundtrack) and Brian Eno (wow. His work with Roxy Music, Talking Heads, John Cale and his own work - Music for Airports being my fave... 1/1 has been used in films and will stand the test of time)

But their influences are evident strongly throughout Unforgettable Fire (and Eno on U2’s Passengers effort) and I wore that album out playing it over and over. And the EP Wide Awake in America with its live version of Bad. Dear gawd. Perfection. The Three Sunrises. Uplifting and melodious

It’s amazing how one person’s inspirations become another’s influence and on and on and out and out

Anyway. I’m rambling. And “40” is on. “How long, to sing this song....” as my son snores next to me.

Re: mailboxes. RWers are bringing up some article about it during Obama, too. Well...

They leave out a key point:

“Postal Service policy requires approval by the Area and ***public notification^** in order to permanently remove a collection box.”

Also, doesn’t explain the removal of massive amounts of sorting equipment!

got USPS data showing at least 671 USPS mail sorting machines have been removed across the country since June. Represents a reduction in national mail sorting capacity of 21.4 million pieces of mail per hour. https://washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/usps-states-delayed-mail-in-ballots/2020/08/14/64bf3c3c-dcc7-11ea-8051-d5f887d73381_story.html

Sen Tester raises alarm over removal of mail boxes in Montana

https://twitter.com/kylegriffin1/status/1294442513466634240
Several U.S. Postal Service collection boxes are set to be removed across Montana.

Sen. Jon Tester is demanding answers from Postmaster General DeJoy about how many collection boxes have been removed and the rationale behind their removal.

Per NBC article:

MISSOULA, Mont. — UPDATE: At 3:10 Friday afternoon, NBC Montana confirmed that the removal of USPS collection boxes has been put on hold statewide. A union leader says the decision came after Friday's pressure.

..

“I write today regarding reports of United States Postal Service (USPS) collection boxes being removed from numerous communities in Montana,” wrote Tester. “If true, this seems to be occurring without any transparency or communication with impacted Montanans.”

...

NBC Montana confirmed with the Montana State Association of the National Association of Letter Carriers the orders to remove 13 boxes in Missoula, 9 in Bozeman, 3 in Lewistown and 30 in Billings. A source that wishes to remain anonymous sent us the directive for Missoula, which lists addresses in front of the Target store, and several downtown Missoula.
