Google kills CAPTCHAs: Are we human or are we spammer?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/12/03/google_moves_beyond_text_puzzles_with_no_captcha_recaptcha/

Google has developed a new CAPTCHA-like system to allow people, and not automated software, into websites with only a single click.

The "No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA" offers a tick box for humans to check rather than distorted text to decipher. It's designed so that automated spam software is still fooled by it and gets stuck on the page, whereas humans can tick a box and continue through.

CAPTCHAs1 in all their various forms have been a feature of the web for years. The technology is designed to protect websites from spam and abuse by attempting to weeds out genuine visitors from robots and abusive scripts.

Users have typically been obliged to confirm they aren't robots by reading distorted text and typing it into a box.

I feel very bad for Eric Garner, his family, his friends, NYC and the AA community....

I admit, I don't know enough about that case, but it seems to be a 100% travesty of justice!

This must stop, now. Forever. No more cops killing black men.

eta: And of course, JUSTICE FOR ERIC GARNER AND MIKE BROWN!

Best non-American film of all time, in your opinion ?

Non-American = Was entirely or almost entirely made in another country besides the USA, and the director is not American-born nor a resident.

I have no nominations. I flunk at this part of film school.

14 degrees south latitude, amazes me it got that cold there.

Elevation 30 ft (9 m), so that's not the reason.

My personal philosophy about DU

I don't know, maybe writing this will be good for me or another person out there. At the least, it won't harm anyone. Here goes....

I'm not here to hurt anyone, in any way.

I'm not here to WIN at all costs, to beat my "DU opponent" into the ground with my intellect, logic, data, etc.

Have I made mistakes and said a few inadvisable things on DU ? Of course. I do my best, as we all do.

I'm here to learn. Maybe have a "DU friend". I'm a loner, so, yea, "DU company" is nice at times.

I'm sure everyone disagrees with me on at least one topic, and the reverse is true for me. I think we can be respectful and civil about it. When the respect and civility goes away, there is no way I'm changing my mind, and I'm sure the same is true of others on DU.

At any rate....that's me. Sometimes I feel like I should lurk only, but.... I like to talk.

Happy holidays, group members !

When was the last time a stranger did something kind for you ?

I'm still waking up, but what REALLY sticks out in my memory was the time a complete stranger bought me a can of FixAFlat, for use with my flat tire. She had obviously overheard me lamenting my plight to AAA on the phone, went into the store, bought it, handed it to me with a smile.

Impressed the hell out of me! I'm sure there's something more recent.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

SSRI Discontinuation or Withdrawal Syndrome

http://psychcentral.com/lib/ssri-discontinuation-or-withdrawal-syndrome/0005734

After some people stop taking a type of antidepressant known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), they experience a variety of symptoms. According to Dr. Ross J. Baldessarini, professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School and director of the psychopharmacology program at McLean Hospital, these symptoms may include “a flu-like reaction, as well as a variety of physical symptoms, that may include headache, gastrointestinal distress, faintness and strange sensations of vision or touch.”

This common phenomenon is known as SSRI discontinuation syndrome. (It may also be known as SSRI withdrawal syndrome.)

Discontinuation symptoms typically arise within days after stopping the medication, particularly if it was stopped abruptly. Stopping a high dose of a relatively short-acting drug also can bring on symptoms. In addition to the previously-mentioned symptoms, “anxiety and depressed or irritable mood are common features that may make it hard to differentiate SSRI discontinuation syndrome from early return of symptoms of depression,” Baldessarini said.

About 20 percent of people experience discontinuation symptoms, according to Dr. Michael D. Banov, medical director of Northwest Behavioral Medicine and Research Center in Atlanta, and author of Taking Antidepressants: Your Comprehensive Guide To Starting, Staying On and Safely Quitting. About 15 percent experience mild to moderately bothersome symptoms while fewer than five percent experience more severe symptoms, he said.
