Full Show: Reckoning with Torture

After 9/11, the U.S. government turned to torture — in defiance of domestic and international laws — to extract information about and from terrorists and others who might follow after them. Were it not for defense attorneys and the work of human rights organizations, these prisoners would be ignored. But that’s changing.
The American Civil Liberties Union and the international literary and human rights group PEN have teamed up to comb through 150,000 declassified documents — as well as large collections of articles and transcripts — to produce The Torture Report: What the Documents Say About America’s Post-9/11 Torture Program, written by PEN’s Larry Siems. PEN and the ACLU have also staged readings of excerpts from the documents and first-person testimony at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah and Lincoln Center here in New York.
Those readings have been videotaped and are being made into a documentary by movie director Doug Liman called Reckoning with Torture. Liman is now asking people across the country to videotape their own readings of declassified memos and testimonies for the project.

(Toronto Star) MONTREAL—It was just last summer that Montreal was ranked by Lonely Planet readers among the top three “best summer cities” in the world.
Not this summer, many fear.
Many tourists choose the summer season to visit Montreal, but the uninterrupted student strikes are prompting some of them to think twice.
While the government and student federations sat down to talk Monday, nearly every sector that depends on tourism reported a significant drop in business. ..................(more)

You’ve seen the warnings all across the major newspapers about a global slowdown. But why no warnings of austerity dead ahead? Why? America’s still deep in denial. We prefer happy talk to the truth. No, nobody will get honest about austerity till after the elections. Then it’ll hit hard.

Till the elections, nobody else will tell you the truth about what comes with this slowdown: Plan on classic economic austerity. Maybe not austerity as deep as the euro zone’s Spain and Greece. Donald Trump, who has probably never shied away from a media-driven confrontation, took to Twitter to respond to George Will’s criticism that he was a “bloviating ignoramus.” The billionaire businessman blasted Will on Sunday, tweeting that he “may be the dumbest (and most overrated) political commentator of all time. If the Republicans listen to him, they will lose.”
The insults began when Will questioned Mitt Romney’s decision to appear at a campaign fundraiser with Trump on Sunday’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.” —TEB

Bellicose former U.N. ambassador John Bolton, who has been informally advising Romney on foreign policy, was the keynote speaker at a GOP fundraiser in Iowa last night where he pleaded, “Even if you’re not at this moment an enthusiastic supporter of Gov. Romney, will you please get yourself together in the next three or four months?” His inspirational message continued: “He may not have been your perfect candidate, but consider what you will see on the ballot on Nov. 6. This is not a tough decision.” Mitt Romney: Probably Better than the other guy.
In typical Bolton fashion, he also told the Polk County Republicans that a dollar spent on defense is better “than a dollar spent with the Department of Health and Human Services.” ................(more)

New Orleans Times-Picayune employees to learn their fates next week
Individual meetings with Times-Picayune employees, at which they will learn whether they have lost their jobs or will be offered new positions with the new NOLA Media Group, are set to begin in about a week — probably starting Monday, June 4 or Tuesday, June 5, according to sources with knowledge of Advance Publications' plans.
Many newsroom employees spent their Memorial Day weekend updating resumes, obtaining copies of their clips, networking by telephone and social media and following job leads in New Orleans and elsewhere.
At the meetings, Advance, which owns The Times-Picayune, will reportedly offer severance packages to some employees, while tendering job offers to others. Job descriptions will likely be revised, and those who receive offers to stay will likely have to reapply for the new positions within the newly created NOLA Media Group.
Sources also say a number of entirely new people may be hired to contribute content to the company’s online operation, particularly in the fields of sports and entertainment, which are a big part of the plan. Sports editor Doug Tatum and features editor Mark Lorando were among those included in the off-campus meetings held in the middle of the month, when the company’s new publisher, Ricky Mathews, came in to speak to senior officials. ..................(more)

(Independent UK) Police adopted an “impermissibly low tolerance to public protest” ahead of last year’s royal wedding, lawyers representing anti-monarchist activists who were pre-emptively detained to stop them protesting it have told the High Court.
The accusation came on the first day of a judicial review hearing into the Metropolitan Police’s handling of public protests, which could have significant implications for how the Olympic Games are policed this summer.
A group of 20 activists, who were among scores searched and detained during or before the ceremony, have asked the court to rule that the Commissioner of Police operated an unlawful policy that violated the fundamental democratic right to protest.
Their lawyers accused the Met of effectively “suppressing anti-monarchist sentiment” yesterday. They hoped the case would be heard in time to influence policing at the forthcoming Jubilee celebrations but Lord Justice Richards, who is hearing the judicial review application in London with Mr Justice Openshaw, said that was unlikely, opening up the possibility of a similarly robust policing plan next week. ...............(more)

(Guardian UK) Tony Blair has told the Leveson inquiry that Rupert Murdoch did not lobby him directly over media policy when he was prime minister and highlighted examples where his government had gone against the News Corporation founder's wishes.
Blair said on Monday that he and Murdoch had "a working relationship until after I left office". After this they became closer and Blair was godfather to Murdoch's daughter Grace, he added.
He told Lord Justice Leveson that Murdoch "didn't lobby me on media stuff", but said that was "not to say we weren't aware of the positions their companies had", in particular his strong views in opposition to European integration.
But he said on regulatory matters affecting Murdoch's business directly, "we decided more often against than in favour". .........(more)
