Russia: U.S. controlling an "international terrorist alliance"

Source: CBS

Russian officials accused the U.S. on Thursday of siding with “terrorists” in Syria, in a sign of escalating tensions between Moscow and Washington amid the battle for the northern Syrian city of Aleppo.

U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby’s warning that the collapse of U.S.-Russian cooperation in Syria could lead to a rise in extremism and potential attacks against Russia drew Moscow’s anger.

The Russian Foreign and Defense Ministries both cast it as U.S. encouragement of terror attacks on Russia.

“We can’t assess those statements as anything else but a call, a directive for action,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.

Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Kirby’s statement amounted to “the most frank confession by the U.S. side so far that the whole ‘opposition’ ostensibly fighting a ‘civil war’ in Syria is a U.S.-controlled international terrorist alliance.”

Passengers in Uber's self-driving cars waived right to sue for injury or death

The company has rolled out a self-driving fleet in Pittsburgh. But passengers might not be aware of how experimental the pilot still is

Mark Harris in Seattle
Monday 26 September 2016 15.36 EDT

Anyone requesting an Uber ride in a 12-sq mile area in the center of Pittsburgh might now be randomly allocated a self-driving Ford Fusion rather than a human-operated vehicle.

But passengers riding in Uber’s computer-controlled cars today might be surprised at just how experimental the technology is. According to documents obtained by the Guardian under public records laws, until as recently as June anyone not employed by Uber riding in one of its autonomous vehicles (AVs) had to sign a legal document waiving the company of any liability for their injury or death.

<snip>

All rides are currently free during the trial.

<snip>

Public passengers today do not have to sign any such waiver, and Uber confirmed to the Guardian that all riders in self-driving Ubers are covered by $5m of accident insurance, in line with pending legislation in Pennsylvania.

“It’s possible that, by not charging for rides, Uber’s pilot program avoids Pennsylvania’s rules for taxicabs,” says Bryant Walker-Smith, a professor at the University of South Carolina. “Courts generally hold that providers of transport for hire have a heightened responsibility for the safety of their passengers. However, I’d expect a court to hold Uber to a similarly high standard if its program were to result in injury.”

SLS Flight Software Safety Issues at MSFC (Update)

SLS Flight Software Safety Issues at MSFC (Update)
By Keith Cowing on September 26, 2016 5:48 PM. 17 Comments

Keith's 26 September note: Shortly after this original posting on 9 September Andrew (Andy) Gamble was summoned to MSFC Center Director Todd May's office to talk about QD34 issues. During subsequent closed door meetings MSFC management decided that they did not have any software problems - when in fact they do. A few days later Steven Pearson, Deputy Director of NASA MSFC's Safety & Mission Assurance Directorate, suddenly announced his retirement after 37.5 years at NASA. This is not surprising since the internal assumption is that the first SLS flight will have a built-in risk of failure of around 8%. This risk is being "baked in" to the design of SLS in part due to decisions being made at MSFC about software and avionics - decisions that are being made so as to not surface troublesome issues that no one wants to deal with. One can imagine that safety folks at MSFC are nervous.

Meanwhile, contractor employees working for QD34 who have surfaced the issues I reported earlier have suddenly found their funding yanked. Moreover, employees who are leaving or thinking of leaving as a result of raising concerns - are being specifically blackballed - by name - by MSFC management. Potential employers are being told by NASA MSFC that they risk wining new contracts - or losing existing contracts - if they hire these individuals.

<snip>

This is no way to build a rocket folks.

Keith's 9 September note: NASA's SLS program has been experiencing budgetary and scheduling issues for years as noted in multiple GAO and OIG reports. The program has also had problems with technical issus such as software and avionics. Multiple sources report that one of the places experiencing significant problems is QD34 at NASA MSFC - where significant SLS flight software safety issues are mounting - issues that no one else is hearing about. The Branch Chief for QD34 is Andrew Gamble. NASA MSFC management - and perhaps the NASA OIG might - want to pay that organization a visit.

Keith's 9 September update: According to an internal memo there is a "lack of understanding by QD34 of the intent of NPR 7150.2B (A or B) [NASA Software Engineering Requirements] and of CMMI [Capability Maturity Model Integration] when it comes to a higher level of process, procedure, etc. rigor expected for Class A software than for Class C" and that actions by NASA MSFC QD34 management represent "a direct attempt by our QD34 customers to intentionally minimalize the differences to avoid making matters complicated and having to make any corresponding changes for SLSP at this time."

Some of the comments with the article:

I work for QD34 as a contractor. I would like to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from the branch chief and I would like to keep my job and others have been fired. I have seen QD34 management manipulate data and discourage people from speaking out using intimidation. NASA upper management needs to confront this problem or it will keep getting worse.

You are not alone... which is why websites like this are so critical. It is not that we will change anything however we can document, document, document so when the wheels do come off the wagon we can say see I told you so.

I do not have any faith and confidence in OIG anymore. They are well aware of the problems here.

I agree, OIG is a puppet organization on so many levels. I've seen them ignore outright fraud many times.

South Korea, US to simulate attack on nuclear facility

Source: CNN

South Korea and the United States will conduct a mock attack on a nuclear facility next month, an official with the South Korean Defense Department told CNN.

<snip>

The US and South Korea will also simulate what to do in the event of a sudden missile attack.

North Korea's nuclear test prompted a strong rebuke from the international community, with South Korea saying it was "getting ready for the worst case scenario."

The simulation, dubbed joint exercise "Red Flag," will take place in Alaska from October 3 until October 21..

<snip>

The munitions

In its announcement, South Korea said the nuclear facility attack simulation will take place using a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition, a kit that converts bombs that normally just free-fall from planes into guided munitions.

New Film Tells the Story of Edward Snowden; Here Are the Surveillance Programs He Helped Expose

Source: The Intercept

OLIVER STONE’S LATEST film, “Snowden,” bills itself as a dramatized version of the life of Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower who revealed the global extent of U.S. surveillance capabilities.

Stone’s rendering of Snowden’s life combines facts with Hollywood invention, covering Snowden being discharged from the military after an injury in basic training, meeting his girlfriend, and training in the CIA with fictitious mentors (including Nicolas Cage’s character, most likely a composite of whistleblowers like Thomas Drake and Bill Binney). Snowden then goes undercover, only to see an op turn ugly; becomes a contractor for the CIA and NSA; and finally chooses to leave the intelligence community and disclose its vast surveillance apparatus, some of which he helped develop.

<snip>

So here’s a retrospective of sorts for moviegoers and others interested in the journalism Edward Snowden made possible through his decision to become a whistleblower: In all, over 150 articles from 23 news organizations worldwide have incorporated documents provided by Snowden, and The Intercept and other outlets continue to mine the archive for stories of social and political significance.

In the hope that Stone’s movie will spark more widespread interest in the NSA programs Snowden helped bring to light, The Intercept has compiled its stories based on the archive of documents, which can be explored through the chart below.

Ultimately, the movie reflects Stone’s image of the life of an NSA contract employee. For a real window into the agency, there may be no better resource than the NSA’s own documents. In May 2016, The Intercept began the first concerted effort to make large portions of the Snowden archive available to the public with the release of a set of SIDtoday newsletters, the internal news organ of the Signals Intelligence Directorate at the NSA. The batch releases are ongoing and will likely constitute one of the largest single collections of NSA files.

A New Map for Relationships: Creating True Love at Home and Peace on the Planet

https://anewmap.com/get-the-book/

“Marty and Dorothie Hellman have written a truly unique book that tells an engaging and persuasive story relating domestic peace to world peace. This book should be read by married couples seeking peace at home, as well as by diplomats seeking peace in the world. This is an especially important work considering the enormously destructive power of nuclear weapons. The struggle for interpersonal dominance can lead to the end of a marriage, but the struggle for geopolitical dominance can lead to the end of civilization.”
William J. Perry, Secretary of Defense 1994-1997

“This is the most impressive book I’ve ever read. I’ve never seen anything as personally touching and thought provoking. I will embrace the journey.”
Axel Merk, President of Merk Investments, manager of the Merk Mutual Funds

“This is the most thoughtful, unique, and fascinating book I have ever read on personal and international diplomacy. Drawing from their own poignant experiences in managing spousal relations – candid stories that will resonate with all readers – Dorothie and Marty Hellman persuasively apply their life lessons to the domain of foreign affairs. We are often puzzled when peoples of two nations seem to get along, while their governments are at loggerheads. The Hellman’s have much to say about why this does not have to be so.”
Lt. Gen. Karl W. Eikenberry (U.S. Army, Retired)
Commander of Coalition forces in Afghanistan (2005-2007)
US Ambassador to Afghanistan (2009-2011)

“I really enjoyed reading A New Map for Relationships. Your personal story is both charming and very valuable. It has helped me to improve my relationship with my wife, even though she has not yet read the book. I’m looking forward to her doing so, so that we can discuss it together. I really loved the way you integrated resolving interpersonal and international conflicts. Your journey of discovery and transformation is one of hope for couples and for the planet. Thank you so much for sharing it.”
David Krieger, President, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation

“A New Map for Relationships is an ambitious and bold study that thoughtfully combines the personal and the political-historical to relate helpful insights to the improvement of both personal and international relations. Its analysis of international conflicts is probing and heavily historically-oriented. It urges honesty, truth, and understanding, and stresses the value of empathy, tolerance, and forbearance with both wisdom and compassion.”
Barton J. Bernstein, Professor of History, Emeritus, Stanford University

“Marty and Dorothie Hellman offer a ‘unified field theory’ for successful relationships at all levels of the human family. The Hellmans use compelling personal and historical examples to illustrate how compassionate, holistic solutions will provide personal security, national security and international security. Every spouse, partner, citizen, and world leader should read this book!”
Daniel U. Smith, Appellate Attorney and Board Member, The Ploughshares Fund

“It is indeed true that each of us carries the fuse of the nuclear threat in her individual heart. It is also true that we generally do not know that simple fact. Some of us go out of our way on a mission to solve the nuclear threat ‘out there,’ without recognizing that the only way to solve it is ‘in here.’ When a person finally discovers the hatred that harbors in his heart, he crosses the threshold that leads to wisdom. This book can greatly accelerate that process.”
Dr. Federico Faggin, designer of the world’s first microprocessor
