Lawyer paid $130k to silence adult-film star over sexual encounter with Trump: report

A lawyer for President Trump reportedly arranged a six-figure payment to a former adult-film star to keep her from discussing a sexual encounter with Trump, according to a new report Friday.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Michael Cohen, an attorney for the Trump Organization at the time and now Trump’s personal lawyer, arranged for Stephanie Clifford, known in the industry as Stormy Daniels, to receive $130,000 as part of a nondisclosure agreement one month before the 2016 election.

Clifford has privately alleged to sources interviewed by the Journal that she and Trump had a consensual sexual encounter in 2006, the year after he and Melania Trump were married. Clifford was 27 years old at the time of the alleged encounter in Lake Tahoe.

A White House official declined to comment to the Wall Street Journal about the payment, but said that the allegations of the interaction between Trump and Clifford were “old, recycled reports, which were published and strongly denied prior to the election.”

A thought just came to me. Is Trump trying to get impeached?

Think about it. His remarks and actions get worse and worse over time. He lies more often than he tells the truth. He spends more time away from the office than any President I can recall. He seems intent on insulting our allies. And the list goes on.

He knows he's in over his head, but his ego won't allow him to quit, so his only way out is impeachment. That way he can blame others for his removal from office without accepting any personal responsibility for his actions.

I just emailed my Congressmen (all Republicans) the following letter:

Dear Sir:

Assuming you do not have Native American heritage, which shithole country did your ancestors emigrate from?

The President of the United States has once again embarrassed our country with his derogatory statements and name calling.

Is there anyone in Washington who can convince Trump of the need to bring a little decorum and dignity back into the office of President of the United States?

It has become apparent to most reasonable persons that Trump is in over his head and, possibly, out of his mind. A sane, rational person does not talk or act in this manner, but we have come to expect this as normal behavior for the President of the United States.

How sad is that?

What kind of replies should I expect?

Former Prosecutors Sound Alarm Bells Over Politicization Of Justice

Since Donald Trump first stirred crowds on the 2016 campaign trail with calls to “lock up” Hillary Clinton, legal observers have been warning about the dangers of politicizing the U.S. justice system.

Those fears grew more urgent late last week with the news that the Justice Department has reopened its investigation into allegations of pay-for-play at the Clinton Foundation, and is also taking a fresh look at the private email server Clinton used as secretary of state. In addition, two influential Republican senators recommended charges against the author of a dossier alleging ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.

There’s no evidence that the White House had a direct hand in any of those actions. But the news comes after frequent calls by Trump for further scrutiny of all three issues, including demanding jail time both for Clinton and for Huma Abedin, a top Clinton aide ensnared in the email probe. Trump already has appeared to pressure Attorney General Jeff Sessions to act in the president’s political interest, frequently attacking the AG for failing to protect Trump from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into potential Russian collusion.

Taken together, the developments suggest a concerted effort by the Trump administration and its allies to push back against Mueller’s intensifying probe, by marshaling the full power of the federal government against the president’s political opponents. That poses a direct threat to the independence and impartiality of the justice system, former DOJ officials told TPM.

This is what's going on while Trump is engaging in his Twitter circus. I am beginning to believe that Republicans are using Trump like some kind of a side show to keep everyone's attention turned away from what is really happening in Washington. This could get really nasty.

Sean Spicer knocks Oprah’s political inexperience — after working for a game show host with no political experience

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer cautioned media mogul and actual billionaire Oprah Winfrey of thinking of a presidential run in 2020 because she has no experience.

During a Monday appearance on “Good Morning Britain,” Spicer seemed to dismiss the assumption that Winfrey has a shot at the high office.

“She doesn’t have the political infrastructure,” Spicer said. “And we’ve seen this before in our history — where people who have tried to pop in who are not in politics and have had a difficult time adjusting.”

“Sean! Sean! Sean!” host Piers Morgan shouted at Spicer. “The current president of the United States had no political experience! Sean! You were his press secretary! Have you forgotten Donald Trump?!”

We are being defeated in a digital war but there is still time to fight back

Last year, Russia and its allies engineered a rift between truth and lies, fact and fake news, humans and bots – and the bots are winning. They're winning because social-media firms profit from all traffic – whatever the source – and governments are simply too slow to counter this threat.

Add to this the evidence of Russian-backed attacks on key institutions of Western democracy: the European Union and Brexit, the Democratic National Committee and the Podesta e-mails. And top this off with a debilitating attack on the National Security Agency itself by an allegedly Russia-linked group called the Shadow Brokers. We are at "e-war": We've traded bullets for bots, soldiers for coders and the Berlin Wall for a firewall.

Russian disinformation – like its more overt Islamic State cousin – is designed to fuel animosities and exploit existing cleavages. The people behind it are not only hate-filled but also experts on audience segmentation. Although diametrically opposed to each other on social, ethnic, political and religious grounds, Russia and the Islamic State are ironically employing the very same techniques to further their respective agendas.

Donald Trump Goes Full Fredo

“I can handle things. I’m smart! Not like everybody says, like dumb. I’m smart and I want respect!”

This morning’s presidential Twitter outburst recalls those words of Fredo Corleone’s in one of the most famous scenes from The Godfather series. Trump tweeted that his “two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart,” and in a subsequent tweet called himself a “very stable genius.”

--------
Before the Saturday morning tweets, what should have been the biggest story of the week was Trump’s success at mobilizing the Senate and the FBI to deploy criminal prosecution as a weapon against Trump critics. The Senate Judiciary committee—the Senate Judiciary Committee! The committee that oversees the proper enforcement of the law!—formally filed a criminal referral with the Department of Justice against Christopher Steele, the author of the infamous dossier about Trump’s Russia connections. The referral was signed by the committee’s chairman, Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, without even notice to Democrats on the committee, Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said; a startling abuse of majority status and a sharp departure from the norms of the Senate, especially a 51-49 Senate.

The Department of Justice can ignore such a referral. It’s ominous, however, that on the very same day, the FBI obeyed Trump’s repeated demands and reopened a long-closed criminal investigation into the Clinton Foundation. The FBI has come under relentless abuse from Trump, who complains about its refusal to do his will. Is it now yielding?
