Mueller probing alleged Flynn plan to deliver cleric to Turkey: WSJ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether U.S. President Donald Trump’s first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, was involved in an alleged plan to seize a Muslim cleric and deliver him to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Under the plan, Flynn, who was fired by Trump after just 24 days in the job, and his son, Michael Flynn Jr, were to receive up to $15 million for forcibly removing Fethullah Gulen from his U.S. home and delivering him to the Turkish government, people familiar with the investigation told the Journal.

The alleged plan emerged during Mueller’s wider investigation of possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and any collusion by the Trump campaign.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses Gulen of instigating a failed coup in July 2016 and wants him extradited to Turkey to face trial. Gulen has denied any role in the coup.

The Glorious Anger of Female Voters, One Year Later

This time last year, I was still hopeful.

This time last year, I was naïve.

As recently as the morning of November 8, 2016, I believed, as I think many American women did, that if we only played by the rules, we could rise to the highest positions of power.

There were still a lot of rules for women, of course. Anyone could see that. The rules became more rigid the more power you wanted. You couldn’t smile too little, or too much. Your voice could not be too high, lest you seem shrill. It couldn’t be too husky lest you seem masculine. You could not be overweight, or, for that matter, pretty in a way that was too obvious. Your hair… well, your hair and makeup would need to be done each day, or people would say you looked sick, and that would take hours. You needed to never appear angry, or, in the least, inconvenienced.

Great article. It really says what many of us are feeling.

Now, for something completely different. . . .

A very Trumpy Hawaii visit

White House protocol experts working overtime to prep POTUS ahead of his upcoming Asia trip can catch their breath this weekend. He’s stopping over in Hawaii, where attitudes are decidedly more “lei’d” back. And in keeping with the high value Hawaiians place on family, or “ohana,” the Press Office has revealed a tentative schedule that includes — surprise! — the whole family is Hawaii bound (with apologies to “Brady Bunch” fans). No word yet on whether it’s a one-way trip for a certain out-of-favor son-in-law.

White House Hawaii Visit Schedule

7:00 a.m. POTUS and family arrive at Trump Waikiki Hotel, where Donald Trump Jr. will strum the ukulele to drown out protesters in the streets. As the family passes the home of US District Judge Derrick Watson, POTUS will tweet derisively about its shoddy construction.

8:00 a.m. While waiting for his gilded hard hat to arrive at a building site, Don Jr. will find a ceremonial tiki idol. Ignoring local warnings that it is “taboo” to keep it, and that bad luck follows anyone who touches the idol, he will take it, anyway, because, a) it’s free and b) everybody knows that the rules don’t apply to Trumps.

White House chief of staff calls for special counsel to probe Democrats

(Reuters) - White House Chief of Staff John Kelly said on Monday a special counsel should be appointed to investigate Democrats over a uranium deal during the Obama administration and a dossier compiled on Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"I think probably as a layman looking at this kind of thing we need to find someone who is very, very objective who can get to the bottom of these accusations," Kelly said in an interview on Fox News.
---

Some Republicans have said Hillary Clinton's State Department approved the deal after her husband's charitable foundation Republicans in Congress last week launched an investigation into an Obama-era deal in which a Russian company bought a Canadian firm that owned some 20 percent of U.S. uranium supplies.

Some Republicans have said Hillary Clinton's State Department approved the deal after her husband's charitable foundation received a $145 million donation. The New York Times has reported that Clinton, a Democrat who lost to Republican Trump in the 2016 election, did not participate in the decision. a $145 million donation. Deflect, deflect, deflect. That seems to be their entire game plan.

Two American Women Rescued After Five Months at Sea

Two American women lost at sea for five long months have been rescued after a broken mast and a disabled engine took them thousands of miles off course.

Jennifer Appel, 48, and friend Tasha Fuiava were found by a Taiwanese fishing vessel around 900 miles southeast of Japan, the U.S. Navy said Thursday. A Navy ship based out of Sasebo, Japan, rescued them on Wednesday morning Japan time.
------
On May 23, the women set off from Oahu bound for Tahiti, about 2,600 miles away, but problems soon arose. First, a piece of the mast called a spreader failed, Appel said, limiting the sailboat's maneuverability, and on May 30 a storm flooded the engine. Communications were also impacted.
------
On the 99th day of distress calls, a Taiwanese fishing vessel found them, they said. It began towing the sailboat, but by that time Appel said the ship was in such poor condition she estimates it wouldn’t have lasted another a day.

You've got to love this attitude: "Well, you gotta die sometime," Appel said. "You may as well be doing something you enjoy when you're doing it."

Great question about chickens and eggs.

I don’t know how anyone with a shred of dignity or self respect can be part of this administration. Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas.
