Sequestration Causes 70,000 Kids To Be Kicked Off Head Start, But Big Oil Complains About Small, Delayed Lease Sales

Across-the-board cuts to government programs that went into effect in March, known as sequestration, are impacting Americans daily lives in many ways.
For example, up to 70,000 children will be cut from Head Start education programs, the budget of the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be slashed by $1 billion, and approximately 3,000 jobs at national parks will likely be affected.
Despite the breadth of major impacts, the oil and gas industry had the gall last week to complain that the Bureau of Land Management, the agency which oversees leasing on public lands, delayed two small lease sales in California until October due to budget constraints resulting from the sequester.
The Institute for Energy Research, a non-profit backed by the Koch brothers, wrote in a press statement that the Obama administration is planning to maximize the sequesters harm to the U.S. economy. And the American Petroleum Institute, the industrys main lobbying group, said the decision would kill jobs and stifle economic growth.

The people of Newtok, on the west coast of Alaska and about 400 miles south of the Bering Strait that separates the state from Russia, are living a slow-motion disaster that will end, very possibly within the next five years, with the entire village being washed away.
The Ninglick River coils around Newtok on three sides before emptying into the Bering Sea. It has steadily been eating away at the land, carrying off 100ft or more some years, in a process moving at unusual speed because of climate change. Eventually all of the villagers will have to leave, becoming America's first climate change refugees.
It is not a label or a future embraced by people living in Newtok. Yup'ik Eskimo have been fishing and hunting by the shores of the Bering Sea for centuries and the villagers reject the notion they will now be forced to run in chaos from ancestral lands.
But exile is undeniable. A report by the US Army Corps of Engineers predicted that the highest point in the village the school of Warner's nightmare could be underwater by 2017. There was no possible way to protect the village in place, the report concluded.

"When my monthly mortgage payments jumped from $800 to $1300, I contacted US Bank right away to see how I could modify my loan. They told me there was nothing they could do until I missed a few payments--so I took their advice and went into default. But they sent me the wrong paperwork for a modification--and instead of working with me to correct their mistake, they foreclosed on my home of 13 years."

Lehman Reaches Beyond Grave to Grab Millions From Nonprofits

Five years after its collapse, Lehman Brothers is *still* reaching for every last penny - this time, from nonprofits: http://ow.ly/l0Ul9

Almost five years after Lehman Brothers Holding Inc (LEHMQ). filed for bankruptcy and set off the global financial crisis, managers of the banks estate are demanding millions of dollars from retirement homes, colleges and hospitals.

After selling most of its assets, Lehman now says it was shortchanged by scores of nonprofits that were forced to pay to exit derivatives that were unwound after the firm filed for Chapter 11 protection. Photographer: Oli Scarff/Getty Images
The Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, California, gave Lehman $2 million in October 2008 to cancel a swap contract used to manage fluctuating interest rates. Lehman says it wants $12.1 million more and has assessed at least an additional $4.7 million in interest, the research center said in its most recent financial statement. The amount Lehman is seeking is more than half of what Buck spent last year researching Alzheimers, Parkinsons and other diseases.
Lehman is sort of a zombie-like bankruptcy entity: Instead of looking for brains, its looking for cash, said Chip Bowles, a bankruptcy lawyer with Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP in Louisville, Kentucky.

"tea party", "citizens united", etc. are political orgs funded and benefiting the Koch bros.
THAT'S what they should be outraged over, not that anyone would scrutinize these freaking puppet fronts for plutonomists about their IRS forms. Direct political influence, including some politicians themselves, directly beholden and acting for billionaires. THAT is the problem.
