Today's Google Doodle honors Ida Lewis, "The Bravest Woman in America"

There are no definitive records of Ida’s rescues and she was too modest to recount them herself, though some were documented in local newspapers and at least one garnered national attention; in February of 1881 she ventured into the bitter winter winds to rescue two soldiers who had fallen through the ice while traveling on foot. This act of bravery caught the attention of President Grant who shortly thereafter awarded her the prestigious Gold Lifesaving Medal. Eleven years after her death, the Rhode Island legislature voted to rename her former home, Lime Rock Lighthouse, as Ida Lewis Lighthouse in her honor.

Breaking: Alan Colmes has died!

Just heard it on Stephanie Miller. So sad.

I remember listening to him on some little local radio station in the early 1990s. He had a song about Bill Clinton is the greatest president--- Does anyone remember that?

I also remember his announcing when Oksana Baiul won the gold medal at the Olympics, beating out Nancy Kerrigan.

Tonight's Google Doodle: Celebrates the discovery of Trappist-1

BREAKING: Russian Amb. to the UN Vitaly Churkin has died unexpectedly in New York City, . . .

Source: NBC Nightly News

This is the only non-Russian source I found so far.

Here is a link to Reuters, but they are just reprinting the Russian sources. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-un-churkin-idUSKBN15Z1UU?feedTypeRSS&feedNametopNews&utm_sourcetwitter&utm_mediumSocial

Tim Murphy town hall: 2/21 ---CANCELLED!

Tim Murphy will be at Duquesne University in the Union Ballroom 230p - 330 Tuesday 2/21, his topic is Healthcare.

(Found on FB)

UPDATE: http://www.pghcitypaper.com/PolitiCrap/archives/2017/02/21/us-rep-tim-murphy-cancels-pittsburgh-event-to-dodge-his-constituents

People are talking about it.

Including Sen. Al Franken and an unnamed republican member of Congress.

I just don't know what we can do about it. The 25th amendment is a very high hurdle and impeachment isn't going to happen under this republican-controlled Congress.

I understand.... I went from not being able to stomach the sight of him during the campaign to waking up every morning and checking the news to see what he has done crazy overnight. I used to have the TV off all day.... not anymore. Afraid to miss something now.

I have a republican senator and congressman who pay no attention to their constituents. Our democratic senator is wonderful (Bob Casey) but democrats just don't have the numbers (yet). I have made countless (unanswered) calls, sent emails and tweets, and sent about a dozen postcards. I really feel like I'm just spinning my wheels.

He has been there a freakin' month already.... I hope people don't start to lose interest in protesting and mobilizing.

Some useful fact-checking sites (from Twitter):

He asked April Ryan if the Congressional Black Conference are friends of hers? And could she set up a meeting with them.

Guess he thinks all African-American people know each other.

He's cranking up for war.

Building up the military.
Attacking Iran sanctions. Worst deal he's ever seen.
Claiming that Isis has spread. (Hasn't it lost territory under Obama?)

We need some fact-checking here!

Senate democrats reject outside probe of Russia links:

Senate Democrats unify around congressional probe of Trump ties to Russia

On Wednesday, Senate Democrats convened an emergency meeting to plan their next steps in probing the circumstances that led to Flynn’s departure. While significant disagreement remains among Democrats and between the parties on the path forward, Senate GOP leaders affirmed their commitment to conducting a far-reaching investigation through the Senate Intelligence Committee that is already examining allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 elections.
Senate Democratic leaders largely agreed with that approach (Senate Intel Committee investigation) Wednesday, even as some rank-and-file lawmakers said they didn’t trust Republicans to conduct an evenhanded examination of their own party’s White House. The majority party has broad powers to determine the course of an investigation in a Senate committee.
However, Democrats conceded they did not have the support they needed for such a move — primarily, backing from McConnell — and decided to press for a full-throated investigation by Congress instead.

After meeting Wednesday, Schumer, Sen. Mark R. Warner (Va.) — the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee — and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) — the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee — demanded a comprehensive and bipartisan investigation of Trump’s ties to Russia, demanding that lawmakers be “committed to making their findings as public as possible.”

Schumer had previously endorsed the idea of an independent commission. But other Democrats feared risking what precious momentum they had built for an investigation by pushing for such a move.
