Two taco shop toilers track down Webster tip thief

Every so often, you run into a person who doesn't care for trivia contests — but two employees of Fuzzy's Taco Shop in Webster Groves were determined not to let the haters win.

That's why the two workers, Larry Hardney Jr., 28, and Tim Mnyande, 23, chased down a would-be robber who used the popular Thursday-night promotion to snatch a tip jar, stuffed with about $90, from the store's counter.

The two men chased and caught the thief and then held the man until they could turn him over to a police officer, a store manager said.

Webster Groves police did not return phone calls.

Prevailing wage repeal: a con job

Kentucky voted overwhelmingly to elect Donald Trump president, along with historic GOP majorities in both houses of the Legislature. To win, Trump and Kentucky Republicans campaigned on a lot of promises — including to “create jobs,” and “lift the wages” of working people.

This month, the Kentucky Legislature is expected to do just the opposite, by repealing the state’s prevailing wage law.

Prevailing Wage is the minimum wage for skilled construction work on state-funded projects. There are over 82,000 Kentuckians working in occupations affected by its state prevailing wage — carpentry, plumbing, electrical, pavers, roofers, painters and more. A repeal of prevailing wage would be a state-mandated pay cut for these workers.

More than 5,400 expected to attend Womens March on St. Louis

More than 5,400 are planning to take to the streets Saturday, Jan. 21 as part of a march and rally in St. Louis to show unity in the fight for the rights of women and other marginalized groups.

“We are so excited with the amount of energy surrounding the event,” said Valerie Brinkmann, one of the St. Louis organizers. “We encourage all participating to watch the weather forecast and dress accordingly because this event is happening no matter what.”

The theme of the event is: March. Rally. Act. The march will begin near Union Station at Market and 18th streets, proceed east on market and end at Luther Ely Smith Park at 1 Memorial Dr. The route is about a mile, and it’s expected to take about an hour.

Kid Inventors' Day Kid Inventors’ day was created several years ago by people who wanted to celebrate the achievements of the youngest inventors as well as encourage more children to be creative. The date chosen to celebrate this day, January 17th, was no accident—it is the anniversary of renowned polymath, politician and child inventor Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. Due to his countless other achievements, many people don’t know that when Franklin was just 12 years old, he invented the world’s first swim flippers, making him a great role model for every child who dreams of making something nobody has ever seen before. Over the centuries, other children have invented many other things we continue to use today, such as popsicles (a very tasty accident!), the trampoline and ear muffs. Perhaps one of the most impressive things invented by a child is the language of the blind now used the world over, Braille. Louis Braille, its inventor, lost his vision in a tragic accident at age 3 and spent his early teen years developing his new language while studying at The National Institute for Blind Youth in Paris. Almost 200 years later, American teen Ryan Patterson also improved the lives of the disabled when he invented a glove with special sensors that translates the hand motions of American Sign Language into written words on a digital display. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/kid-inventors-day/

Martin Luther King Jr. Day King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King_Jr._Day

International Hot and Spicy Foods Day sparks a wildfire of events, from habanero-eating challenges to fancy-dress contests and cook-offs of popular recipes. Nothing Day has been commemorated since 1973. The day is literally about doing nothing at all, placing it in a similar vein to other such surreal non-occasions as an Un-Birthday or Buy Nothing Day. There is absolutely no purpose or intended structure for this pointless celebration. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/nothing-day/

Religious Freedom Day On January 16, 1786, soon after the United States of America came into existence as a sovereign nation, the Virginia General Assembly adopted Thomas Jefferson’s landmark Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. This statute then became the basis for what we know today as the First Amendment, which guarantees religious freedom to all people residing in the U.S.A. Every year since then, an statement is released on this same day by the president f the United States officially proclaiming Religious Freedom day. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/religious-freedom-day/

Make Your Dream Come True Day People often make the mistake of letting their dreams remain just that: dreams. Dreams they have at night but then neglect in the morning. Dreams they hardly dare speak of lest they don’t come true. Little bits of fantasy doomed to remain that way. But they don’t have to! Of course, there are some dreams, like becoming a neon flying tiger that fights crime with Batman every night, that will likely never come true. But there are also thousands of dreams that are not early as impossible as we think them to be, and could be could in fact be fulfilled with a little planning and work, and sometimes just the courage to do something different than you have in the past. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/make-your-dream-come-true-day/

Complete and utter silence. Even if you do like to read, you have to admit that a life without any kind of broadcasting whatsoever. And that’s what life was like just one hundred years ago. Public Radio Broadcasting Day is a day dedicated to appreciating technology and how much it has improved our lives. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/public-radio-broadcasting-day/
