Trump administration extends protections for Salvadorans, allowing thousands to stay in U.S.

Source: LA Times

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration on Monday extended temporary protected status for thousands of Salvadorans in the United States, granting them reprieve from removal to El Salvador.

Administration officials had insisted for weeks that the continuance of TPS was not on the table in exchange for the resumption of aid to the small Central American country, or the signing of a recent agreement on asylum seekers. An estimated 200,000 Salvadorans in the U.S. have TPS, making them the largest single group under the program. Many live in Los Angeles.

El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, a millionaire millennial who has had warm words for President Trump and his officials, touted the move in a Twitter announcement Monday morning as a victory for his newly elected administration.

10/25/19 - A Day That Will Live in Irony

Today the asterisk president visited Benedict College, an HBCU in Columbia, SC to discuss criminal justice reform the day after revelations that he is conducting a criminal investigation against the FBI, days after comparing the impeachment inquiry against him to a lynching, on the same day as the funeral for a highly-respected black member of Congress whose district he called "disgusting rat and rodent infested."

It is important to note the impeachment is the result of trump's attempt to bribe the Ukrainian president into opening a bogus investigation into a political opponent. While he is investigating the probe of Russian attacks on the 2016 election, there are no known allegations, and no known persons of interest. It is, in fact, another bogus investigation attempt. It is also important to note that his personal attorney is seeking an attorney himself as he is under federal investigation.

Six elephants have fallen to their deaths in Thailand while trying to save each other from a notorious waterfall.

Officials said the incident occurred after a baby elephant slipped over the waterfall in central Thailand's Khao Yai National Park.

Two other elephants were also found struggling on a cliff edge nearby, and have been moved by Thai authorities.

The waterfall, known as Haew Narok (Hell's Fall), has a history of similar incidents.

North Korea breaks off nuclear talks with U.S. in Sweden

Source: reuters

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - North Korea’s top negotiator said late on Saturday that working-level nuclear talks in Sweden between officials from Pyongyang and Washington had broken off, dashing prospects for an end to months of stalemate.

The North’s chief nuclear negotiator, Kim Myong Gil, who spent much of the day in talks with an American delegation, cast the blame on what he portrayed as U.S. inflexibility, saying the other side’s negotiators would not “give up their old viewpoint and attitude”.

“The negotiations have not fulfilled our expectation and finally broke off,” Kim told reporters outside the North Korean embassy, speaking through an interpreter.

The U.S. State Department said those comments did not reflect “the content or spirit” of more than 8-1/2 hours of talks, and Washington had accepted Sweden’s invitation to return to Sweden for more discussions with Pyongyang in two weeks.
