"an astonishing 86 percent of African Americans had a negative view of Trump."

Trump faces significant obstacles to achieving that unity, particular with blocs that are not white men. Seven in 10 women view him unfavorably. It’s even worse with minorities. A recent Gallup poll found that 77 of Hispanics view Trump unfavorably. A Washington Post poll pegged that number at eight in 10, seven of them “very unfavorable.” An NBC News/Survey Monkey poll found an astonishing 86 percent of African Americans had a negative view of Trump.

One reason for those atrocious ratings is the way Trump speaks to and about minorities, which was on display during his victory speech Tuesday.

“We're going to have great relationships with the Hispanics,” he said. “The Hispanics have been so incredible to me. They want jobs. Everybody wants jobs. The African Americans want jobs. If you look at what's going on, they want jobs.”

Part of Trump’s rhetorical power is his supercharged used of “we,” a method that persuades people across the country that they are part of a larger movement, and somehow share with Trump his aura of wealthy and luxury. (It’s the same technique he’s used to sell real estate for years.) In the midst of his spiel about all the ways “we” would make America great again, Trump tossed in this passage about minorities.

His phrasing is telling. First, it suggests that for Trump, blacks and Hispanics aren’t part of “we”—“they” constitute separate groups. Perhaps that’s an accidental, unthinking division, but subconscious racial division is no less dangerous. Second, it shows him assuming that minority concerns can be reduced to economics. That view is perhaps unsurprising for a man who has spent his career trying to accumulate wealth, but it is a two-dimensional view of black and Hispanic Americans.

The fact that his policies simply don’t line up with what most African Americans want in a president is one reason his numbers with black voters are so bad. Another factor is a presidential campaign driven in large parts by divisive appeals to racism and bigotry against Hispanics, Muslims, and other groups. Trump also has a long history of racially charged incidents, from alleged tenant discrimination to his strident reaction to the Central Park Five.

The entertainer has long spoken about minority groups with the outdated formulation involving a definite article: “I have a great relationship with the blacks. I’ve always had a great relationship with the blacks,” he said in 2011, using language that undermined his claim. He’s said similar things about “the Hispanics.”

Arrested and rough ride to jail for filming cop and posting video online

Pennsylvania man wrongly arrested and given rough ride in police car because he posted video on Facebook of cop dealing with parking dispute

PITTSBURGH - A Pennsylvania man was wrongly arrested, given a rough ride in a police car and jailed for hours after posting a Facebook video he recorded when a police officer responded to a parking dispute at his home, according to a federal lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The American Civil Liberties Union sued Armstrong County District Attorney Scott Andreassi and a Ford City police officer on behalf of Michael Gratteri.

The lawsuit alleges Andreassi wrongly approved the criminal charges, which Andreassi later withdrew but not before Officer Joshua Wilford arrested Gratteri for violating the state's wiretap laws more than a month after the September 2014 confrontation was recorded and posted on Facebook.

"The wiretap law does not apply to public interactions with police," said Christy Foreman, an attorney who has volunteered to represent Gratteri. The state law makes it a crime to record someone's voice without their permission.

"The officer's actions charging Gratteri were intended to punish him for posting the recording on Facebook," Foreman said.

Bill Kristol redefines “never”: The always-wrong pundit explains how he and his GOP pals will come around to Trump

Thank you, Bill Kristol. The Weekly Standard editor and career strikeout leader among active pundits is generally viewed as a blight on public discourse, but he provided a valuable service this week (albeit unintentionally) when he offered a succinct catchphrase that explains how he and the rest of the Republican Party hacks that inhabit his orbit will eventually warm to likely GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Asked by Newsmax host Steve Malzberg if there was anything Trump could do to win Kristol’s favor, despite the fact that he has been a vocal proponent of the #NeverTrump movement, Kristol offered this flawless diamond of cognitive dissonance to explain his thinking: “I mean, I guess never say never. On the one hand, I’ll say #NeverTrump, and on the other hand, I’ll say never say never. I’ll leave it ambiguous.”

Man crashes new McLaren 10 minutes after delivery

It was tree 1, supercar 0, as one of the most exclusive British supercars just became a little less common after the new owner of a McLaren 650S managed to crash it 10 minutes after taking delivery of it.

The accident happened in Essex last week. Neighbours reported seeing the man celebrating with a bottle of champagne as the new car arrived at his house. But within minutes the sleek lines of the £215,000 supercar had been reduced to a mangled lump of carbon-fibre and metal after the driver lost control and ploughed into a tree.

The 650S features a twin-turbocharged V8 engine and can hit 60mph in less than 3sec. Acceleration is so fierce that it will reach 100mph in the time most family cars take to reach 30mph (5.7sec) and can continue all the way up to a top speed of 204mph.

I'll 'make their life miserable': tech CEO bullies low-income vendors by his home

A Silicon Valley tech CEO who sparked outrage for threatening to aggressively harass low-income fruit vendors and “make their life miserable” now says he is “terribly sorry” – with an apology that continues to defend his position.

Mark Woodward, CEO of software company Invoca, published – and eventually deleted – a post on a public Facebook page saying that if fruit sellers were stationed outside his home in a suburb of San Jose, he would “do whatever it took to make them leave” even if “that meant destroying some of their produce, or standing out there with signs to chase everyone away”.

Asked on Monday for comment about his post – which made him only the latest wealthy California entrepreneur to rant about low-income people – Woodward refused to apologize, sending a short statement saying his comments were an “emotional reaction”. He said he deleted the post because he “realized bringing a nuanced conversation to a social forum where it could be taken out of context was not the best way to bring resolution to a serious, multi-faceted issue”.

On Tuesday, in the face of significant backlash, he published a Medium post titled My Apology, saying he learned a “tough lesson” about “the power of my words”. Woodward said he had posted on Facebook to share his “frustrations with a situation affecting my family and our neighborhood”:

In Woodward’s original Facebook posts, he described a situation in which he appeared to be the aggressor: “I had a family, not from our neighborhood who was constantly digging through the recycle bins in our neighborhood illegally. I confronted them rather aggressively and they have never been back.”

Oakland cops sorry for ‘insensitive’ Cinco de Mayo press release

The Oakland Police Department apologized Tuesday and retracted a community message they acknowledged used “insensitive” language regarding DUI saturation patrols for the upcoming Cinco de Mayo holiday.

“The Oakland Police Department would like to apologize for the recent press release addressing traffic safety enforcement during the Cinco de Mayo holiday,” the department said in a statement. “We acknowledge that the language in the message sent was completely insensitive to the cultural holiday.”

It was unclear how many people had contacted the department about the message, but on social media some groups were clearly not happy.

“Oakland Police has posted on their Twitter account they’re going to put out Extra Patrols for you drunk Mexicans on Cinco de Mayo,” someone wrote on the Facebook page Oakland Latinos United. “How does it feel. As a Mexican Chicano I wonder if OPD will be posting DUI PSAs for every ethnic & culturally based holiday?”

-------
Below is the original message:

“Community: Cinco de Mayo: Fiesta Time or Jail Time? Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving - ¡Manejar Entonado Es Manejar Borracho!

“In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become synonymous with festive fiestas and salty margaritas. Historically, the fifth of May commemorates Mexico’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War, but present-day celebrations often lead to drunk driving—and there’s no victory in that.

“If you are planning to party this Cinco de Mayo, keep this number in mind: nationwide, 343 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes over the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend in 2014. And drunk driving was the cause of 116 (34%) of these fatalities. Furthermore, many of the drivers in those crashes weren’t just a little drunk. Sadly, almost one out of five (17%) of all the drivers in fatal crashes that weekend had blood alcohol concentrations of 0.15% or higher—almost two times the legal limit in every state.

“The Oakland Police Department is continuing its ongoing efforts to stop and arrest impaired drivers, deploying extra officers on DUI saturation patrols May 5 to lower deaths and injuries. The DUI operation will be operational from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. this coming Thursday.

“In the rush of party preparations and getting dressed up for a night out, it’s easy to forget the most important Cinco de Mayo plan of all: designating a sober driver. Some fiesta-goers think they can play it by ear and wait until after the party has started to decide whether they’re ‘okay to drive.’ By this point, it’s too late. Going out for a night of drinking without a plan to get home safely is a recipe for disaster.

“Remember: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving. And when you drive drunk, you run the risk of killing yourself or someone else. You will be looking at jail time, the loss of your driver’s license, higher insurance rates, plus other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car or motorcycle towing and repairs, and lost wages due to time off from work. The average DUI costs about $10,000. Wouldn’t you rather pay for a ride home?

“So before your first margarita, cold beer, or shot of tequila this Cinco de Mayo, make sure you have a designated sober driver or arranged another safe way home

Ted Cruz and zodiac killer

Another Twitter user asked: 'Anyone else having a hard time making sense of the transcript of Cruz's concession speech?' and attached a picture of one of the cryptograms sent to the police by the killer at the time of the murders.
Someone else found it strange that Cruz would drop out of the race 'just as the Zodiac speculation intensified', when one joke read like a headline announcing: 'For the first time in 47 years, the Zodiac killer has taken a new victim - Ted Cruz's campaign'.
One Twitter user went as far as saying: 'I feel bad for Ted Cruz, who was going to restore the sanctity of the Oval Office with a ritual Zodiac killing'.

Olympic ceremony uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren sure looks like his work

if you were representing your country on the world stage, what would you want to wear?

The answer is probably not "sailor boy garbage", which is what one waggish online commentator labelled America's uniform for the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics.

Designed by none other than Ralph Lauren, Team USA's get-up has received an avalanche of less than positive reviews. Still, it could be worse, as the following car crash uniforms suggests ...

Ralph Lauren’s Olympic Uniforms Are Straight Out of Prep-School Hell
The U.S. Olympic team has unveiled its costumes for this summer’s closing ceremonies, and boy are they preppy. Our nation’s finest physical sporting specimens will bid farewell to Rio de Janeiro clad in striped Ts, button-down shirts, white shorts, red-white-and-blue boat shoes, and “striped cotton bracelets.” The look is straight out of private-school central casting, bursting with enough moneyed leisure vibes to make Ryan Lochte—sport’s doofiest, fist-pumpiest, archetypal bro, for chrissakes—look even douchier.

new Poll Shows Tuesday Could Mark Beginning of End to “Never Trump” Campaign

It’s hardly a secret just how important Indiana has become in the Republican contest. And a new poll out Sunday is likely giving heartburn to the GOP establishment eager to find a way to stop Donald Trump before the convention. According to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll, Trump has support from 49 percent of likely Republican Indiana voters, while Cruz has 34 percent and John Kasich, 13 percent. Trump’s 14-point lead is much wider than other polls in the state and suggests momentum could be on the billionaire’s side.

“If a result even close to this occurs on Tuesday, then we can all get ready to find a new party to call home,” writes Red State’s Leon Wolf

Donald Trump became a unifying force on May Day in downtown L.A.

thousands of people took to the streets in the annual May Day marches in downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights on Sunday to advocate for immigration reform, police accountability and an end to racism.

http://www.reuters.com/news/picture/may-day-rally-in-los-angeles-features-st?articleId=USKCN0XS1LK&slideId=1135323854

http://s3.reutersmedia.net/resources/r/?m=02&d=20160501&t=2&i=1135323856&w=&fh=&fw=&ll=644&pl=429&sq=&r=LYNXNPEC40136

The diverse array of protesters shared one thing in common: all were offended by something Donald Trump had said. The Republican presidential candidate literally loomed over one of the rallies in the form of a giant balloon effigy carrying a Ku Klux Klan hood.

He's plastic, he doesn't have a heart, he doesn't have a brain," organizer Francisco Moreno said, as he gestured at the swaying effigy. "We're not going to vote for Trump!"

Even small children were shouting anti-Trump slogans as protesters assembled in two groups in downtown Los Angeles at noon. They marched parallel routes that ended at Grand Park and Olvera Street, blowing horns, riding bicycles and waving signs supporting various causes
http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-0502-may-day-march-20160502-story.html

Frustration was fueled -- some say -- by the fervor of the Republican candidate's own words. For the crowd of largely Latinos, Trump's campaign rhetoric has been seen as a personal attack, CBS Los Angeles reported.

"Trump's speech is hate speech, definitely. We wanted to show that we can confront that speech in a smart way," said another demonstrator.

A second rally was organized by the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition, which ended around 3 p.m. Wrapped in an American flag, Miriam Hernandez was among a couple of hundred people who attended it.

"We are here just to work and create a better life for our families," said Hernandez, whose mother and brothers are back home in Mexico. "I haven't seen my family for a very, very long time."

She and the others at the rally hope their message resonates in Washington, D.C.: they want immigration reform.

Luis Gallardo, a 16-year-old from Bell, told CBS Los Angeles he desperately wants to become a citizen. His parents brought him here when he was 2 years old.

And without that path to citizenship, he believes he won't have a smooth path to a good future.
