atufal's JournalPlease help! Remember case of Southern white man convicted of murder of black man simply going home?
Hi all.
Because I'm doing a video on why some have doubts about the criminal justice system in this country, I'v been going nuts for days trying to find this case: A well-regarded journalist tells the story of a white man being convicted of killing a black man in the South. Years later the reporter decided to go tot the state prison and interview killer about the crime.
He wasn't there.
Prison suggested that he might be in federal witness protection. Feds said there was no witness protection at the time of his conviction and they didn't have him.
Reporter looks in phone book of small town to find relatives of man and finds person listed with the same name as the missing guy.
Couldn't be...
The killer answers the phone.
He'd been led out the back door after his sentencing for murder and simply sent home. Had been free for years. He hadn't even tried to hide.
I've done every kind of search possible. If someone recalls this case, please help! Thanks!
