The primal and paleo diet? ...lifestyle?

My basic premise is this: The Primal Blueprint is a set of simple instructions (the blueprint) that allows you to control how your genes express themselves in order to build the strongest, leanest, healthiest body possible, taking clues from evolutionary biology (that’s the primal part).

Sometimes we get so lost in the science of human biology we just can’t see the forest for the trees. We overlook the simplicity and ease with which we could all be achieving exceptional health and fitness.

Living in modern society is extremely complex. With daily mind-boggling achievements made in science, technology and medicine, and with an ever-expanding knowledge base that increasingly grows more esoteric and niche, it is no wonder that we often look for complicated scientific solutions to problems that really only require simple answers. One of the best examples is the huge – and expensive – race to identify all the new possible genetic variances (or SNPs) within the human genome that might predispose some of us to certain health conditions. Hardly a week goes by without a new announcement of the discovery of a so-called “defective” gene that increases someone or some group’s risk of being obese, of getting cancer, of developing type 2 diabetes or arthritis. The net effect of all these announcements and the sensationalized news headlines is that many of us have become accustomed to blaming our health conditions on our unlucky inheritance of these “defective” genes. As if it weren’t enough to abdicate responsibility here, we then cross our fingers and close our eyes and hope that the scientists can create pharmaceutical “answers” to our particular condition before it’s too late. In most cases a few lifestyle adjustments are all that are needed to address all but the most serious of these genetic variations. Yes, I agree that some serious genetic diseases exist which are best treated with modern, truly life-saving drugs, but for the vast majority of the minor genetic variations that exist throughout the human genome, the real deciding factor as to whether or not a particular gene will be expressed in a particular manner, if at all, comes down to what you eat, how you move, what kind of air you breathe, what you think –in other words your environment. Big Pharma (CW) doesn’t want us to believe that most of our ills can be so easily solved, and so billions of dollars are being spent to unlock the so-called secrets of the genome. Meanwhile, the real secrets – and solutions – are contained within the DNA of every single one of our cells.

The essence of the Primal Blueprint is this: Most of life is really much simpler than modern medicine and science would like to have you believe. You can have a tremendous impact on how your genes express themselves, simply by providing your cells the right environments. All you need is a basic understanding of how your body works and a simple philosophical roadmap you can use to find answers to just about any questions of health and fitness – whether it involves personal choices or lifestyle adjustments or whether medical intervention might be appropriate. With this simple strategy, you will forever be able to examine or evaluate any food choice, any form of exercise or any other behavior in the context of how it impacts your genes! Even if you decide to opt for a “bad choice”, at least you’ll know why it’s bad…

You may already have a pretty fair understanding of how the human genome evolved to exactly where it is today (or 10,000 years ago, to be more precise) based on the environmental and behavioral factors under which our ancestors lived through natural selection. Tens of thousands of anthropologists, evolutionary biologists, paleontologists, geneticists and others have worked for over 100 years to piece together a fairly detailed picture of all the elements that helped influence our development as a species. Ironically though, when we examine all of the many environmental influences and behaviors that shaped our genome, we arrive at a very simple list of general things our early ancestors did to become what and who they were and which allowed them to pass 99.9% of those genes down to us. In essence, this list is the original “Primal Blueprint” since it provided the only set of behaviors they knew –the exact behaviors that enabled then to shape their bodies into healthy, robust, happy beings.

Oilsands environmental data to be released for Earth Day

The federal Conservatives have decided to mark Earth Day this year, launching a long-promised portal for public access to sensitive environmental data from the oilsands.

Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent and his Alberta counterpart Diana McQueen will be at Carleton University in Ottawa on Monday to flick the switch and allow public scrutiny of new research measuring the quality and quantity of the land, air and water in the Athabasca region.

It's a contrast to the defensive stance the Conservatives have taken on Earth Days past. Last year, hundreds of thousands of people rallied in Montreal and other cities against Ottawa's changes to environmental oversight and its withdrawal from the Kyoto accord to cut emissions.

And it's part of an increasingly urgent effort to court more public buy-in for Canada's resource development practices as the oil patch worries about how it will pipe its product to port.

"I think they are on a quest of social license, that's for sure," said Megan Leslie, the NDP's environment critic. "The reasons it's a 'quest' is their own fault."

September 29, 1961: 20-Year-Old Singer Is Bright New Face at Gerde’s Club

By ROBERT SHELTON
The New York Times

A bright new face in folk music is appearing at Gerde’s Folk City. Although only 20 years old, Bob Dylan is one of the most distinctive stylists to play a Manhattan cabaret in months.

Resembling a cross between a choir boy and a beatnik, Mr. Dylan has a cherubic look and a mop of tousled hair he partly covers with a Huck Finn black corduroy cap. His clothes may need a bit of tailoring, but when he works his guitar, harmonica or piano and composes new songs faster than he can remember them, there is no doubt that he is bursting at the seams with talent.

Mr. Dylan’s voice is anything but pretty. He is consciously trying to recapture the rude beauty of a Southern field hand musing in melody on his porch. All the “husk and bark” are left on his notes and a searing intensity pervades his songs.

Slow-Motion Mood.

Mr. Dylan is both comedian and tragedian. Like a vaudeville actor on the rural circuit, he offers a variety of droll musical monologues: “Talking Bear Mountain” lampoons the over-crowding of an excursion boat, “Talking New York” satirizes his troubles in gaining recognition and “Talking Havah Nagilah” burlesques the folk-music craze and the singer himself.

Armstrong described a flurry of police activity.

There are reports that somebody was found hiding inside a boat in somebody’s backyard.

It is unclear at this moment if the gunfire involved at-large Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Fill the Courtroom for the Brooklyn Bridge Mass Arrest Lawsuit

Court of Appeals Hearing

Monday, April 22 at 10 am
Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse
40 Foley Square
17th Floor, Room 1705
New York, NY, 10007
Map to the courthouse

We are urging those who were arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge, and their supporters, to attend the oral arguments of the case at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit hearing on Monday April 22.

U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff's ruled on June 12 in favor of the protestors in this case. Judge Rakoff found that NYPD officers are subject to civil liability for causing the mass arrest of over 700 protestors on the Brooklyn Bridge. The NYPD is seeking to overturn Judge Rakoff’s ruling.

In its brief before the U.S. Court of Appeals, the PCJF argued that Judge Rakoff’s ruling was proper. Given the video evidence, it is clear that police led and escorted the marchers across the roadway of the bridge and, having done so, could not lawfully conduct the arrest without giving notice or warning to the protestors, and then could only have arrested persons who were willfully defiant of lawful police orders (if there were any).

Please note that those who are planning to attend should arrive early so as not to enter during proceedings. You also need to leave time to first pass through security when you enter the building.

The PCJF filed a major brief before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in response to the NYPD’s effort to overturn Judge Rakoff’s ruling. The brief can be read by clicking here.

The initial Class Action Complaint, Garcia v. Bloomberg can be read by clicking here.

Presidential Vaudeville

When the Democratic Party left the filibuster as it was without putting up a fight it gauranteed that little more than kickbacks to corporations would be achieved in the next four years. But boy can Obama put on a show that pleases his adoring fan club after the fact.
