WP: If a newspaper seemingly refuses to employ an independent ombudsman....

Washington Post Will Fill Vacant Reader Rep Role, But Not Revive Ombudsman
Former Ombuds Urge Return to "Truly Independent" Internal Reviewer; Hiatt Declines

Blog ››› January 10, 2014 2:22 PM EST ››› JOE STRUPP

After revealing this week that its reader representative had departed, The Washington Post confirmed Friday that there will be a replacement. But the paper made clear that it will not revive the popular ombudsman position that the reader representative supplanted last year.

"We will not bring the ombudsman back," Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt said in an email. "We will continue to have someone in a reader rep role." He did not indicate when that person would be named.

Hiatt said that while ombudsmen have made valuable contributions to the paper in the past, "we are in an era when we have to make difficult choices."

The decision comes as former Post ombudsmen and others who hold similar jobs elsewhere urge the paper to bring back the ombudsman job, citing the need for independent reviews

Does it make a difference if only a so-called "reader representative" is employed? Is this why the Capehart/Sanders Photograph situation has been allowed to linger?

Who at the Washington Post bears responsibility for the paper's credibility?

A "Bush-plans...attack" headline should remind everyone what the Bush family has done to the world.

Your reference is to Shakespeare's Richard III; specifically, to the dialog right before Richard III

...is killed.

Astoundingly, this reference is possibly even worse than your last one when coupled with your explanation, because it expresses quite the opposite of eventual victory through personal perseverance and determination.

In your new frame, Hillary is Richard III.

Richard III' haughtily opens the address (your partial quotation) by intoning the word "Slave...."

Richard III's chosen way leads to his ultimate failure - i.e., his death - and to him being named a "bloody dog" and a "bloody wretch" as his crown is taken from him.

King Richard III
by William Shakespeare

SCENE IV. Another part of the field. (http://shakespeare.mit.edu/richardiii/richardiii.5.4.html)

Alarum: excursions. Enter NORFOLK and forces fighting; to him CATESBY

A horse! a horse! my kingdom for a horse!

Withdraw, my lord; I'll help you to a horse.

Slave, I have set my life upon a cast,
And I will stand the hazard of the die:

I think there be six Richmonds in the field;
Five have I slain to-day instead of him.
A horse! a horse! my kingdom for a horse!

SCENE V. Another part of the field. (http://shakespeare.mit.edu/richardiii/richardiii.5.5.html)

Alarum. Enter KING RICHARD III and RICHMOND; they fight. KING RICHARD III is slain. Retreat and flourish. Re-enter RICHMOND, DERBY bearing the crown, with divers other Lords

God and your arms be praised, victorious friends,
The day is ours, the bloody dog is dead.

Courageous Richmond, well hast thou acquit thee.
Lo, here, this long-usurped royalty
From the dead temples of this bloody wretch
Have I pluck'd off, to grace thy brows withal:
Wear it, enjoy it, and make much of it.

Great God of heaven, say Amen to all!
But, tell me, is young George Stanley living?

Ironically, aside from "Bring it on!" being one of W's most famous phrases, Richard III could not withstand anyone "Bring(ing) it on!"

Are you sure that you support Sec. Clinton? Indirectly comparing her to either Julius Caesar or to King Richard III is not in the least bit complimentary....

Ex-drug executive Shkreli has $40 million trading loss: U.S.

Source: Reuters

NEW YORK | By Nate Raymond
Wed Feb 3, 2016 1:14pm EST

Former pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli suffered a roughly $40 million drop in the value of a trading account used to secure his bail following his arrest on securities fraud charges, a U.S. prosecutor said on Wednesday.

At a hearing in federal court in Brooklyn, Assistant U.S. Attorney Winston Paes said the account contained mostly shares of KaloBios Pharmaceuticals Inc KBIOQ.PK, a drug company that Shkreli briefly ran.

KaloBios filed for bankruptcy in December, wiping out most of its equity value. That caused the value of Shkreli's E*Trade brokerage account to drop to $4 million to $5 million, from the $45 million level when it had been frozen, the prosecutor said.

Paes told U.S. District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto that Shkreli may need to post new assets to secure his $5 million bond, which was issued following the 32-year-old's arrest in December.

It is important that the DHS investigate the people involved in the Oregon stand-off: N.B., ...

If one were to look at the last part of Mark McConnell's video and examine the content, one sees the following:

From 6:11 to 7:02 in the video:

"A lot of people at the refuge...They're bailin'. Uh...makes sense...I mean...
the..the..this..the...It's over. You know this part of this...this game...this part
of the stage...It's...it's over. It's time to move on to the next stage. Um...
(clears throat)...I got hooked up, made a few phone calls...you know...people in the
network come down...picked me up...very graciously brought me into their motel rooms...
uh...you know...I'm...I'm extremely appreciative of that. You know, but that's how...
that's how this network works.
You know people actually getting out here and doing
things...not just sitting around in FaceBookland talking about all the good shit
they're gonna do or all the bad stuff we're gonna do and all that. They're actually
out here. You know..uh..you know...I..uh...I'm gonna hear all kinds of excuses and
whining and you know my dog broke its pecker and you know my wife keeps her balls
in her purse. I got it. I...uh...I know. Um...(clears throat)...So, you know...
here I am. I'm in the room...uh...relaxing - trying to warm up....

From 7:49 to 9:00 in the video:

"Yeah...The rest of the guys are still in custody. I'm out. Hey, I'm up and out...
because I do a damn good job of keeping myself UN-KNOWN. Ya know...The biggest thing
against those guys is all the stuff they put on social media. This is the second time
I've seen where these cases are...are evolving around people and what they post on
social media. Yeah, you get your First Amendment rights...You also have the right to
be stupid, I guess. Awright...um...(clears throat)...you know I've seen...a..a..a
thing now that...yeah, I must be a Fed or whatever. No, I'm jus av...I'm just smarter
than your average retarded bear...and a lot smarter than your average conspiracy
theorist. Awright...So...y'all got any questions...ya ask me...I'll make another
video. I'll answer your questions. Til then, stop speculation. Get to business. We
have work to do here.
Awright. Let's not let LaVoy's...ya know...death die in vain...
be in vain.
Yeah, it was tragic - you know - like I said...I..I'm..I'm really, ya know,
really got attached to the old man...I mean...the fire he had in him, the life he had
in him...was just phenomenal. We gotta make it work. We got shit to do....Good night.

Hopefully, the DHS is tracking "the network" and determining whatever "the next stage" may be. After all, McConnell has now exhorted them to "get to business."

R.I.P.: Marvin Minsky

Marvin Minsky, Pioneer in Artificial Intelligence, Dies at 88

Marvin Minsky, who combined a scientist’s thirst for knowledge with a philosopher’s quest for truth as a pioneering explorer of artificial intelligence, work that helped inspire the creation of the personal computer and the Internet, died on Sunday night in Boston. He was 88.

Well before the advent of the microprocessor and the supercomputer, Professor Minsky, a revered computer science educator at M.I.T., laid the foundation for the field of artificial intelligence by demonstrating the possibilities of imparting common-sense reasoning to computers.

“Marvin was one of the very few people in computing whose visions and perspectives liberated the computer from being a glorified adding machine to start to realize its destiny as one of the most powerful amplifiers for human endeavors in history,” said Alan Kay, a computer scientist and a friend and colleague of Professor Minsky’s.

Professor Minsky, in 1959, co-founded the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Project (later the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory) with his colleague John McCarthy, who is credited with coining the term “artificial intelligence.”

Michael Moore has much (in addition to that statement) to tweet...

Ben Carson and "our Exoatmosphere (sic)"...

6th Republican debate transcript, annotated: Who said what and what it meant
By Team Fix January 14 at 11:56 PM

CARSON: Well, I'm very happy to get a question this early on. I was going to ask you to wake me up when that time came.

You know, I find it really quite fascinating some of the president's proclamations. The fact of the matter is he doesn't realize that we now live in the 21st century, and that war is very different than it used to be before. Not armies massively marching on each other and air forces, but now we have dirty bombs and we have cyber attacks and we have people who will be attacking our electrical grid. And, you know, we have a whole variety of things that they can do and they can do these things simultaneously. And we have enemies who are obtaining nuclear weapons that they can explode in our exoatmosphere and destroy our electric grid.

I mean, just think about a scenario like that. They explode the bomb, we have an electromagnetic pulse. They hit us with a cyberattack simultaneously and dirty bombs. Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue at that point? He needs to recognize that those kinds of things are in fact an existential threat to us.

But here's the real key. We have the world's best military, even though he's done everything he can to diminish it. And the fact of the matter is if we give them a mission and we don't tie their hands behind their back, they can get it accomplished.

French teacher invented Aubervilliers school attack

Source: BBC

A teacher at a French preschool who said he had been stabbed by a man shouting "Islamic State" has admitted he made the story up, prosecutors say.

The teacher said he had been attacked while alone in a classroom in Aubervilliers, a suburb of Paris.

The local prosecutor's office said he was now being questioned as to why he lied about the incident.

France remains on high alert following the terror attacks in Paris on 13 November that left 130 people dead.

Nevada GOPer On Syrian Refugees: 'I'll Fly To Paris And Shoot 'Em' Myself
By Caitlin MacNeal | Published December 7, 2015, 10:58 AM EST

Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore (R) last month dismissed a statement from Nevada Republicans calling for the state to bar refugees from Syria, and said that she is prepared to travel to Paris to shoot Syrian refugees herself.

During her weekly show on Las Vegas radio station KWDN, Fiore discussed why she did not sign onto the statement from Republican members of the state assembly opposing resettling Syrian refugees in Nevada. Fiore recounted a conversation with Nevada GOP political consultant Chuck Muth, who asked her why she didn't sign onto the statement.

"What--are you kidding me? I’m about to fly to Paris and shoot ‘em in the head myself!" Fiore said she told Muth when asked why she didn't join the statement on Syrian refugees.

"I am not OK with Syrian refugees. I’m not OK with terrorists. I’m OK with putting them down, blacking them out, just put a piece of brass in their ocular cavity and end their miserable life. I'm good with that," she continued.

She sounds like a compassionate conservative - just like W.
