Teenager rescued after showing domestic violence hand signal to motorist...

From The Guardian. This incident occurred in the U.S.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/nov/08/teenager-rescued-after-showing-domestic-violence-hand-signal-to-passing-motorist-police-say

"A missing teenage girl was rescued in the US after using a hand gesture that signals distress or domestic violence to capture the attention of a passing driver.

The 16-year-old was spotted travelling inside a silver Toyota near London, Kentucky, about 150 miles south-east of Louisville, on 4 November.

A driver called police after noticing “a female passenger in the vehicle making hand gestures that are known on the social media platform TikTok to represent violence at home – I need help – domestic violence,” the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on 6 November.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SIGNAL

Isolation can increase the risk of violence at home. Use this discrete gesture during a video call to show you need help:

1. Hold hand up with palm facing other person.
2. Tuck thumb into palm.
3. Fold fingers down over thumb. pic.twitter.com/gsIgSbXOmc

It's good news that this young woman was rescued. There's more text and photos

HPV/Human Papilloma Virus facts from Al Jazeera and the CDC*

*Centers for Disease Control and Prevention here in the U.S.

"HPV jabs (vaccinations) reduce cervical cancer risk by up to 87 percent: Study..."

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/11/4/hpv-jabs-reduce-cervical-cancer-risk-by-up-to-87-percent-study

This is good news for all women but men, young ladies and young men all benefit from receiving the HPV vaccine.

"Nearly all sexually active people will get human papillomavirus (HPV) at some time in their life if they don’t get the HPV vaccine. Although most HPV infections go away on their own without causing problems, HPV can cause genital warts, or cancer. Getting vaccinated against HPV can help prevent these health problems."

Let's celebrate my post number 12,000 with a little Tech Talk!

Here it is November of 2021 and I'm still getting updates for my WIN 7 computer.
That's fine with me since I've been using it as my main computer for some time now.

I'm now using my WIN 10 machine as a backup and when I go to it or my son's
machine to check on updates I'm terrified to see the notice "This Computer Can Run
WIN 11! Get it for free!" I don't think so. WIN 10 is already a step in the wrong
direction, as far as I'm concerned.

I continue to have a mixed response to technological developments. I do love my
puters and the internet but have never wanted a smart phone. Nature and evolution
have provided humans and other critters with arms, legs feathers and fins to get around. Seems to me that cars and planes just bring us bigger problems.

But then vaccines, ground ambulances and Life Flight services are helpful. Obviously I have some things to work out and I'll be tackling that as I move onward
and upward in my post count. Thanks for being here and reading. DU is a big plus
for me too.

Guardian: Walrus leaves Arctic comfort zone for snooze on Dutch submarine

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/nov/03/walrus-leaves-arctic-comfort-zone-for-snooze-on-dutch-submarine

"The disruption from the climate emergency being experienced by marine wildlife reached a new high in the first week of Cop26, when a female walrus was discovered sleeping on a submarine in a naval base in North Holland.

Walruses normally live in the polar regions – several hundred miles north. This particular animal is one of at least two of the species that have been seen far from their Arctic habitat. Another wandering walrus, seen off the Scilly Islands, France, Spain and West Cork, Ireland, has since been sighted back in Icelandic waters.

Freya, as the animal has been named, is the first of her species to visit the Netherlands in 23 years. She was spotted snoozing on a submarine in the naval port of Den Helder by Jeroen Hoekendijk, a Dutch scientist specialising in marine mammals.

She appears to be in good health, although Hoekendijk – who observed the animal feeding on razor clams earlier – noted a raw wound in her front flippers. She is thought to have swum south, following the Danish and German coasts. (Suggestions that she or the ‘Irish’ walrus might have been cast adrift on a broken ice floe were widely ridiculed by marine scientists.)"

Last week my son and I went and did our early voting here in our local

special election in Albuquerque. I prefer to early vote in person since I get to see my
vote get counted when my ballot is fed into the reader. When we went for early voting
there was no line and no waiting. It was in and out very quickly.

Today I drove past our polling location and and since it's the day for regular voting
there was a line of people waiting to get in to vote from the polling place entry all the
way out to the street, at least 50 yards long. There are big advantages to voting by
mail or doing the early bit. But no matter what, vote in every election!

October 30, 1941, President Roosevelt funded the Allied efforts to win World War II.

From The Good News Network.

https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/events061030/

(80 years ago today, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave an additional one billion dollars in Lend-Lease Act funding to Great Britain to help fund the Allied efforts to win World War II.

Though FDR had been re-elected on a platform promising to keep America out of the war, Roosevelt wanted to help Churchill and the UK defeat Nazi Germany, which had already swallowed up France and Poland. The legislation sub-titled ‘An Act to Promote the Defense of the U.S.’, allowed American intervention without troops actually entering the war until years later.

The 4 years of aid also went to the Soviet Union, Free France, China, and others, and included food, oil, weaponry, warships, and warplanes. It was mostly free, although in return the U.S. was given leases on military bases across Allied territory. The total of $50 billion donated (half trillion in 2019 dollars) was 17% of the total expenditures of the U.S. during the war which ended 4 years later.

Russia’s Joseph Stalin acknowledged the importance of the $50 Billion intervention saying, “Without American production, the Allies could never have won the war.”)

There's a photo but no more text at the link. History teaches us many lessons about
what works and what doesn't. FDR's Lend-Lease program worked!

From The BBC: The 17-year-old making films fun for deaf children

https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-58972808

(...)"Seeing my son be able to sit and understand the movie and see things he's not seen before in eight years, it's amazing."

For eight-year-old Toby, who is deaf, watching films or TV on streaming platforms can sometimes be a bit pointless - because so many of them don't have sign language versions.

"We have captions but they don't really do anything for him because it goes quite fast. He would just watch and not get much from it," his dad Jarod Mills tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

But now, Toby has some help thanks to an app developed by a 17-year-old A-level student.(...)

It's encouraging for me/us to see what good/productive things can be accomplished
by one person. Much more text and photos at the link.
