Jameis Winston Isn't The Only Problem Here: An FSU Teacher's Lament

We love the game. We love the players, too, even when they scare us.

Like the blue-chip defensive secondary leader who wrote his personal essay for an openly gay professor on the time in high school he gleefully commanded a posse to bash a girly fag near to death, caved the queer's face, and ruined his smile.

Or the hulking offensive star who brought a friend to help him corner a short, pretty instructor alone in her closet office and scare her within an inch of her life for telling the athletic department he was clowning in class.

Or the top offensive player who sought tutoring from me on a plagiarized paper while tweaking on uppers. Or the standout lineman who never showed for my lectures or turned much in except for a term paper written in someone else's voice, then magically disappeared from the class roll when I resisted the team handlers who pressed me not to fail him.

These guys are all starters at Florida State University. They're probably going to play for the national title; they're almost certainly going to go high in the NFL draft. None of them is older than 22, and they already have longer Wikipedia entries than anyone on the FSU faculty.

And no. This isn't confined to FSU.
Unfortunately, an article like this could be written about many schools. It also reaches into some high schools.

THIS is why passing the nuclear option is so important:

The Critically Important DC Circuit Court
Despite progressive victories in 2012, the far right’s outsized influence on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit gives them the power to undermine progressive laws and thwart the agenda that Americans elected President Obama to pursue. This court’s decisions affect the entire country, making it second only to the Supreme Court in national importance.

The DC Circuit is dominated by right-wing ideologues who are deeply hostile to the use of a robust federal government to tackle national problems and make our lives better. There are now three vacancies on the 11-member court, and President Obama has nominated three highly qualified people – Patricia Millett, Cornelia “Nina” Pillard, and Robert Wilkins – to fill them. But Senate Republicans – who blocked President Obama’s efforts to get even one judge onto the DC Circuit during his first term – are gearing up for more obstruction. Too much is at stake for us to allow that to happen again.

The DC Circuit Is Unique. The DC Circuit by law is the exclusive court to consider appeals of an array of agency regulations and decisions affecting the entire country. Moreover, even when parties appealing agency decisions, congressional statutes, or presidential actions have a choice of venues, they often choose to have their cases heard by the DC Circuit due to its expertise in complex administrative matters.

While the Supreme Court is better known, it only hears a miniscule portion of appeals that are filed with it. So when the DC Circuit makes a ruling, it is almost guaranteed to be the last word on the matter.

Every facet of our lives is affected by some aspect of federal law, whether it’s clean air rules, gun safety, telecom regulations, investor protection rules, securities fraud laws, labor law, banking regulations, food safety requirements, credit card regulations, election law … All these can be appealed to the courts, and that court is often the DC Circuit. So for those seeking to block a progressive federal government agenda, the DC Circuit is an important vehicle.

Consequences of Far Right Domination of the DC Circuit. Unfortunately, the current ideological imbalance on the DC Circuit has led to troubling decisions, frequently ones favoring the powerful and limiting the role government can play to address national problems. A sampling of those decisions:

President Obama needs to ramp up the appointments and nominate as many qualified judges as possible.
The courts are too full of right wing ideologues as it is. Filling every vacancy he can with decent judges could begin to turn the judicial system away from its current tilt. The Supreme Court limits itself in the number of cases it will hear on appeal.

Yes, I know that many of Obama's appointments have been blocked. However, put the vetting process into overdrive.

Jeebus! Read what these San Jose State students did to their black roommate:

SAN JOSE -- First, his white roommates nicknamed him "Three-fifths," referring to the way the government once counted blacks as just a fraction of a person. When he protested, they dubbed him "Fraction."

Then they outfitted the four-bedroom dormitory suite they shared with a Confederate flag. They locked him in his room. They wrote the "N-word" on a dry-erase board in the living room. They fastened a bicycle lock around his neck and told him they lost the keys, then tried it again a few weeks later.

It may sound like something out of the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. But police reports indicate it happened last month in the Obama era to a black student at San Jose State University, a liberal campus boasting statues of Olympic athletes making a black power salute.

Late Wednesday, prosecutors filed misdemeanor hate-crime and battery charges against three of the student's roommates over the alleged hazing, which has sparked anger in the community and on the diverse campus. The men are Logan Beaschler, 18, of Bakersfield; Joseph Bomgardner, 19, of Clovis; and Colin Warren, 18, of Woodacre.

"This is outrageous," said the Rev. Jethroe Moore II, president of the San Jose/Silicon Valley chapter of the NAACP. "This form of bullying cannot be tolerated."

The students were not available for comment and it was unclear late Wednesday whether they had legal representation. They could face penalties ranging from probation to a year in jail if convicted, as well as university discipline.

They need to comb the statutes and throw everything in the book at them!
Prank my ass.

A Boeing Dreamlifter landed at the wrong airport in Kansas:

A Boeing 747 LCF Dreamlifter sits on the runway after accidentally landing at Jabara airport in Wichita, Kansas Wednesday night Nov. 20, 2013 thinking it was landing at McConnell Air Force Base.

WICHITA, Kan. — A Boeing 747 jumbo jet mistakenly landed at a small Kansas airport not far from the Air Force base where it was supposed to land to deliver parts for the company’s famed new 787 Dreamliner.

The 747 landed Wednesday evening at Col. James Jabara Airport, about 8 miles north of its intended target, the McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. Jabara’s runway is just 6,101 feet long, much shorter than is ideal for an aircraft of that size.

"Bye Daddy"

"Bye Daddy,"
9:15 am- 11/21/1963

“Bye, Daddy,” says Caroline Kennedy, hugging her father before setting off to school. “Bye, Caroline,” he responds. The President has half an hour left in the residence before leaving on the short walk to the Oval Office.

As for John Jr. (“John John” he was called), Dad intended to take his son with him to the airport a bit later to say goodbye. The boy who would turn three in just four days (Caroline would turn six in six days), plays with toy planes and watches a light rain begin to fall outside.

A Catholic priest asks a question during a children's sermon and boy he got an answer:

Children's Sermon

A Catholic priest was presenting a children's sermon. During the
sermon, he asked the children if they knew what the resurrection was.
Now, asking questions during children's sermons is crucial, but at the
same time, asking children questions in front of a congregation can
also be very dangerous.

Having asked the children if they knew the meaning of the
resurrection, a little boy raised his hand........

The priest called on him and the little boy said, "I know that if you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hours you are supposed to call the doctor."

It took over ten minutes for the congregation to settle down enough for the service to continue
(Email)

I know this could be made up, but it's still funny IMO.

This Is What A Car Crash At Nearly 200mph Looks Like

This crash occurred at a Nov. 10 meet of the El Mirage 200 MPH club, when driver Brian Gillespie lost control of his car at speeds somewhere between 180 and 190 MPH. Gillespie was airlifted to the hospital, but was largely and remarkably unharmed.

The vehicle's safety equipment worked exactly as planned. Gillespie suffered a collapsed lung and some cuts and bruises, an amazingly short laundry list for someone who just rolled his car a billion times. He was released from the hospital a week after his crash.

When these cars roll like this, the force of the crash is released in an extended period. The cage and other safety features do a good job of protecting a driver.
When there is a crash with the same amount of force that occurs bluntly like running into a wall, it's released in a short time. That can cause more serious injuries.
