It came as a surprise to everyone when I graduated from one of the top private schools in the country and, instead of attending college like most of my classmates did, joined the military.
I was an immigrant — my family came to America from Jamaica when I was 10 — and female children of immigrants are often taught by their parents that your life path is limited to three options:
1. Have a business that makes a lot of money
2. Go to college for a job that makes a lot of money
3. Marry someone who makes a lot of money
Simple right? The army fit none of those criteria. But I disliked everything about schools. I hated the pretentious kids at my school, I hated the cardboard cutout curriculum, and I especially hated the canned food they reheated and sold for five to ten dollars per day.
My decision was especially was off putting to my family because of the type of people and situations they thought I would be around. I wasn’t the most sheltered person, but I was a bit more privileged than the typical 18-year-old who chooses to join the army. Going from nuns and affluent stay at home moms to drill sergeants not-all-that-much-different than the drill sergeant in Full Metal Jacket was a bit of a culture shock. But I handled it
I am now going on my 6th year in the military. When I left my first duty station in Alaska, I changed from active duty to reserves. After my active duty discharge, I started wearing headwraps. Whether it was the bright and beautiful colors of the different cloths, or the fact that my ears were never again cold, I loved them. I wear them everywhere. (Also, I have to say that the headwrap changes the way men approach me on the street. Instead of “hey redbone” or “hey bitch” its “hey beautiful nubian sista.” Which I know is super, duper problematic, but that’s another topic for another day.)

I do not recognize Donald Trump as the President-elect.
Nor will I recognize him as President.
This is not about policy differences. I have had major policy differences with many elected officials. This is not about being a sore loser. I was upset about Bush v Gore and the shenanigans in Florida but I accepted those results.
This is about a foreign government directly and openly supporting one candidate and the possible hacking of votes. In addition, this is about the close ties and conflicts of interest that Donald Trump has with Putin and Russia. Until there is a complete and transparent investigation of this matter, Trump is a clear and present danger to this country.
There should also be a concurrent investigation into Trump's conflicts with other countries. The potential for him to make decisions based on personal gain is unparalleled and huge.
I am not calling for violence. I am stating my position however little effect it will have. I am not repudiating my American citizenship. This is my country and there are many people who represent the ideals it was founded upon even though they have dimmed.
I know this will have little or no effect and it will probably be ridiculed. Be that as it may, this is my position. It is one that I never thought I would ever even consider.
America is better than this and should be fought for.

WASHINGTON—Donald Trump’s eldest son, emerging as a potential envoy for the president-elect, held private discussions with diplomats, businessmen and politicians in Paris last month that focused in part on finding a way to cooperate with Russia to end the war in Syria, according to people who took part in the meetings.
Thirty people, including Donald Trump Jr., attended the Oct. 11 event at the Ritz Paris, which was hosted by a French think tank. The founder of the think tank, Fabien Baussart, and his wife, Randa Kassis, have worked closely with Russia to try to end the conflict.
Ms. Kassis, who was born in Syria, is a leader of a Syrian opposition group endorsed by the Kremlin. The group wants a political transition in Syria—but in cooperation with President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow’s close ally.
