LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A dramatic fire erupted on the sixth floor of a high-rise apartment building on the Westside of Los Angeles on Wednesday morning, prompting a massive response from firefighters on ladder trucks and in helicopters.

The fire broke out shortly after 8:30 a.m. in the 11700 block of West Wilshire Boulevard in the Sawtelle neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

At least eight people were treated at the scene, including a 3-month old child, LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas told reporters at the scene. One of those patients was in critical condition, and six suffered smoke in inhalation.

One man was see climbing horizontally across the facade of the 25-story building after crawling out of window what was emitting an inferno of flames. He was later rescued by a firefighter who approached him from atop a ladder truck.

HBO's incendiary 'Last Week Tonight' host (and recently sworn-in American) returns with plenty to say about Trump's 2020 campaign, Harry and Meghan, his awkward run-in with an AT&T exec ("We sized each other up" ), and the secrets behind his Emmy-winning brand of "aggressively-researched comedy."

On Friday Dec. 13, 2019, at the age of 42, John Oliver became a U.S. citizen. He can vote. He can serve on a jury. He can get arrested — without fear of being deported.

Since 2006, when he first came to the U.S. to work as "senior British correspondent" on The Daily Show, Oliver has lived with a pulsating anxiety that his life could be upended at any moment. "There isn't any part of me that didn't think I'm a little bit vulnerable. I do talk shit," he says, as the very visible host of HBO's Emmy-winning Last Week Tonight. "Under another country's politics, that would be cause for deportation, or at least [the government] engaging in some form of fuckery. Like something out of Goodfellas: They open a door, plastic sheeting, Jared Kushner in a swivel chair stroking a hairless cat."

When he appeared at the federal building in lower Manhattan with his lawyer and his wife, Kate Norley (a former combat medic), for the naturalization ceremony, he was so nervous he blanked on his phone number. Eventually, Oliver, along with 159 other people from 49 countries, raised his right hand and took the oath. He was given a tiny American flag as Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be an American" played and a photo of Donald Trump glowered from a wall. "The feeling you get at the end of that process is overwhelming relief," he says. "And that it's nothing to do with the current president."

It was inevitable that the Cult of Trump would ultimately settle here. Any Republican who dares to acknowledge the relevance of facts outside the disinformation bubble that President Trump and his propagandists have constructed in his defense -- facts they are unable to control -- can only be driven by Trump “hatred.”

Fox News’s Sean Hannity staged a spectacular meltdown at Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Tuesday night, over Romney’s desire to hear testimony from John Bolton, the former national security adviser whose forthcoming book relates that Trump didn’t want to release nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine until its president carried out Trump’s political bidding.

Hannity’s performance illustrates how preposterously weak Trump’s defenses have become, and how heavily they depend on insulating Trump’s extraordinary corruption, and the lies justifying it, from contrary facts and legitimate outside scrutiny.

Notably, this comes after Sen. Martha McSally of Arizona became a Trump-movement hero for staging her own ugly outburst at a reporter who politely asked whether she wanted to hear new witnesses and evidence at Trump’s impeachment trial.

Allies of Donald Trump have begun holding events in black communities where organizers lavish praise on the president as they hand out tens of thousands of dollars to lucky attendees.

The first giveaway took place last month in Cleveland, where recipients whose winning tickets were drawn from a bin landed cash gifts in increments of several hundred dollars, stuffed into envelopes. A second giveaway scheduled for this month in Virginia has been postponed, and more are said to be in the works.

The tour comes as Trump’s campaign has been investing its own money to make inroads with black voters and erode Democrats’ overwhelming advantage with them. But the cash giveaways are organized under the auspices of an outside charity, the Urban Revitalization Coalition, permitting donors to remain anonymous and make tax-deductible contributions.

The organizers say the events are run by the book and intended to promote economic development in inner cities. But the group behind the cash giveaways is registered as a 501(c)3 charitable organization. One leading legal expert on nonprofit law said the arrangement raises questions about the group’s tax-exempt status, because it does not appear to be vetting the recipients of its money for legitimate charitable need.
