Easy Basic Raita Recipe

So, here's the last of our Indian food videos for now (though we will be doing the saag feta that hubby makes and is -amazing- sometime in the not-too-distant future). This is just a simple and delicious condiment to go with the rich and unctuous curry. Raita actually works as a condiment for any number of delicious and rich curry dishes, and provides a bright and sour contrast to the rich and spicy curry gravy.

Raita, like so many recipes, is made differently all over the place. This is a pretty basic one with just cucumber and onion, but I've seen raita that includes tomato, carrot, and even pineapple or mango. We seasoned with just lemon juice, salt, toasted cardamom pods, and some dried hot pepper, but you can also use things like cumin, ginger, and mustard if you want. We like to keep the flavour profile very simple to keep it from getting muddled.

Oregon Republicans shutting down the state senate to kill a climate change bill by fleeing the state

This crossed my Twitter today:

I kinda feel like Oregon Republicans shutting down the state senate to kill a climate change bill by fleeing the state and literally threatening to murder police while rallying white supremacist militias to engage the US government in armed conflict should be bigger news.

Anywhoooo, hello from Oregon, where it appears Republican state senators have fled the capitol and are teaming up with local paramilitary groups for a potential armed standoff with state police.

And a bit of follow-up:

To clarify:

1. Senators fled the state over the climate bill and are still MIA.

2. A senator threatened to shoot police tasked with retrieving them.

3. Militia groups are independently mobilizing to “protect” the senators, but NOT at the request of the fleeing senators.

“Teaming up” was a bad choice of words on my part. The militias are itching to getting involved, but there is no evidence they are coordinating with the any of the senators or their staffs.

Cashew Coconut Chicken Curry Recipe

So, this week as a continuation of the Indian cuisine we started last week with that lovely fresh salad/relish, we're doing this rich and delicious curry! Now, we take pains to go ahead and toast and burr mix our own spices for the curry powder, but if you have a favourite curry powder you like to use, that will certainly work for this dish. The thickening in this comes partially from the cashews/coconut, partially from the yams, and partially from the coconut milk!

Lots of room to personalize this recipe, of course. The spice mix can be altered to whatever you prefer. You can spice it up with hotter peppers, even fresh. Also, you can keep this vegetarian if you replace the chicken with tofu or TVP, and replace the chicken stock with vegetable stock or mushroom stock. Next week we'll be doing a recipe for raita that makes a delicious tangy topping for this curry.

We just got a new light to film with, and we're still getting used to it. I hope the video doesn't look too orange to everyone! We're a super low budget operating, and we're not used to having actual, y'know, gear.

Mitch McConnell is the gravedigger of democracy.

I've said this in threads enough times that I figured I should just make an OP:

Mitch McConnell is the gravedigger of democracy.

As long as he's getting what he wants, he's going to keep going. If Trump's voted out, he'll continue to obstruct as he did with Obama. He rushed dozens and dozens of judge nominations through when he knew he could get his friends from the Federalist Society on the bench, and withheld nominations for years under Obama until there was a shortage and a crisis. This is all in addition to his blatant theft of Merrick Garland's seat on the SCOTUS.

He's super rich, insanely powerful, completely out of touch with any constituency that doesn't include other extremely wealthy and powerful people like himself. He will actively harm the poor, women, POC, LGBTQ+, and immigrants, because none of those people even exist in any meaningful way for him. They're (we're) an abstraction. He will suppress votes, gerrymander, lie, cheat, block Senate votes, obstruct, whatever he thinks he needs to do to give his party the tiniest edge. Not even because he believes in the party, but because it will keep him in power.

Taking back the senate should be the Democratic Party's and the DNC's order of business #1. The GOP stranglehold on the Senate must be broken, and in the 2020 election, there are enough GOP candidates defending that it would be possible. That blue wave has to come back again and wash over the Senate.

Trump admin says pride flags can't fly above U.S. embassies, sending a clear message to the world

From NBC: https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/trump-admin-says-pride-flags-can-t-fly-above-u-ncna1015856

U.S. embassies and consulates around the world aren’t allowed to raise LGBTQ pride flags on their flagpoles this month, the result of a policy change from the Trump administration. This decision, while perhaps not surprising given Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s stance on LGBTQ equality, sends exactly the wrong message about America at a time when the world is already questioning our moral and political leadership.

In countries struggling with discrimination and oppression, a U.S. embassy is seen as a beacon — not of perfection, but of the continuing fight toward greater equality and opportunity. That shouldn't stop in June, when countries around the world come together to celebrate the LGBTQ community and remember the advocates who fought and continue to fight for equality. Prior to joining NBC, I was a civil servant at the State Department and in 2016, when posted in Frankfurt, Germany, I was responsible for raising the pride flag in front of the consulate during Pride Month.

In other words, when an embassy makes the decision to raise the pride flag, it’s because the diplomats posted there believe doing so could have a genuine impact on the LGBTQ dialogue in their host country. The opposite is also true: A decision to stop flying the flag, after years of doing so, sends a clear and troubling signal to local communities. I trust our diplomats to know what’s best. And I would hope State Department officials in Washington would allow them to do their jobs.

And of course Pence is vocally on-side with it:

Canada Proud paying people to wear banana costumes, push anti-Trudeau campaign

From CTV: https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-proud-paying-people-to-wear-banana-costumes-push-anti-trudeau-campaign-1.4470049

The national iteration of the anti-Liberal social media group Ontario Proud launched earlier this year with the focus of seeing Liberals and Trudeau defeated in the October federal election.

Part of this campaign has been the creation of a website and hashtag #TrudeauIsBananas. The webpage produced by Canada Proud states that before the federal election, voters should question "if he's ripe for another term," offers a limited "unpeeling" of Trudeaus record, and includes an acrostic poem of sorts, claiming Trudeau "builds absolutely nothing, anytime near anything."

According to an email obtained by CTV News sent by the "experiential marketing" firm Tigris Events that Canada Proud has hired to organize this event, the group will be paying a dozen "brand ambassadors" to distribute flyers, and encourage people to engage with the ongoing social media campaign, practically across the street from the Prime Minister's Office.

"This campaign is intended to be a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek approach to politics. It uses facts and poses questions to shed light on some of Trudeau's policies and decisions. It’s not meant to be a nasty smear campaign," reads the pitch sent by Tigris looking for participants.

Can Ontario Proud/Canada Proud just go away, yet? I'd love for that loose congealing of white supremacists and fascists to just flush itself down Hogsback Falls.

2 people shot near Raptors rally at Nathan Phillips Square

CBC Story: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/raptors-rally-shooting-1.5178886
CTV Story: https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/shooting-at-raptors-rally-causes-panic-stampede-1.4470263

This is about a block away from where I work. My building and the Eaton Centre across the street from me were on lockdown for the better part of an hour, and I got some interesting pictures of police in SWAT great with an armoured truck and big rifles.

I don't think I was in any real danger where I was, but it was very close by, and there was a lot of running and screaming in the street below my window.
