Obsidian pitching Star Wars RPG set between episodes III and IV

Tom Senior at 11:23am February 8 2013

“I would say it’s within the top three pitches we’ve ever come up with,” Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart told RPS, describing Obsidian’s pitch for a new Star Wars game set between the end of the recent trilogy and the start of A New Hope.

“We think that timeframe is super interesting,” he added. “It’s the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi, it’s Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few. So it was an interesting time to set a game, and you know, Chris Avellone came up with a really cool story.”

Urquhart described how Obsidian condensed their ideas into a pithy eight page pitch and almost lured Lucasarts in. “We sold it off to LucasArts and got a call back later that day. They were like, ‘This seems really cool. We want to talk to you guys, like, tomorrow about it.’”

But it’s Disney’s decision to make these days. “We haven’t [talked with Disney yet]. We’re kind of waiting for the smoke to clear. But that’s one of my next big things to do. To kind of go over there and [get the ball rolling again].”

Sounds interesting, I liked KOTOR and will get started on KOTOR2 as soon as I finish New Vegas.

I grew up with the original trilogy so that's the period I like best, but this sounds cool too. I always wondered about Vader's rise to power, it would have made for a much more interesting set of prequels than Anakin's identity crisis and sudden fall to the dark side out of nowhere. But I digress.

Ever since I saw "A New Hope" all I wanted to do was fly an X-Wing, which I got to do in the game "X-Wing". Now there's a game that could use an update, but it ain't gonna happen; you can't sell sims on consoles...

Anyway, go Obsidian!

Daikatana Comes to GOG.com

Marshall Lemon | 8 February 2013 7:21 am

The infamous shooter that tarnished John Romero's reputation can now be sucked down on Windows 8.

Before Duke Nukem Forever, there was Daikatana. The brainchild of John Romero and Ion Storm, Daikatana was supposed to be the next big thing in PC gaming. Three years after its planned release, gamers finally sat down to discover out-of-date graphics, incompetent AI companions, and artificially limited level saves. Coupled with a marketing campaign that promised to make us John Romero's bitch, the game found itself reviled even by fans of Romero's work. Now the infamous PC shooter has found a home with GOG.com, where today's gamers can decide for themselves whether Daikatana was a misunderstood gem, or honestly deserves all the hatred heaped upon it.

It's not a terrible move by GOG, since they probably were able to secure the right to sell it for practically nothing. But I think they got the price point wrong. Apparently they're selling it at $5,99, which I think is much too high. By all accounts the game is as bad as everybody says (having watched some of a Let's Play on YouTube I would agree), so they can only sell it to people who buy it out of sheer morbid curiosity or the ones who want to be able to say they own one of the worst games ever. And to do that I think they should have set the price at $0,99 - $1,99.
