Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors (along with Tom Robbins). Steinbeck usually focused on
showing us the nobility inherent in "common" men and women -- though he didn't try to conceal
their flaws in doing so.

One good thing you can say about Sarah Palin is that she never made her dog ride on top of the car.

Ptah's post about Amado reminded me of one of my favorite oddities in AZ...
.
.
.
... The Shady Dell, about 5-10 minutes short of Bisbee (making it a GREAT "base camp" for a trip to Bisbee -- although
it's cool in and of itself).
.
Eight stationary "travel trailers", a dry-docked small yacht, and a converted tour bus from a 1940's California Triple-A
baseball team (the site's "Tiki Bus" . All the furnishings, dime paperbacks and magazines are authentic. It IS a time
machine experience. It's internationally-known... and when I stayed there, chances were there were foreigners there,
too -- mostly from either Europe or Australia. The "guest journals" in each trailer were out-and-out FASCINATING!!!
.
It looks like there's several changes from when I stayed there 10 years ago. It used to be open year-round. There used
to be a fantastic 10-stool diner onsite (an old aluminum "hamburger joint" moved there from its original spot in
California -- run by a classically-trained chef and his wife who had gotten their start providing tuna fish sandwiches so
they could tour with The Dead. It's not mentioned, so I assume it's gone or closed.
.
Prices have gone up. They no longer have the two really SMALL trailers (2 of the 4 that I stayed in -- one homemade
from plans in Popular Mechanics -- they were $35 & $40 a night). Now, you can expect to pay $80-120... but I promise
you it will certainly be one of the, if not THE coolest "hotel room" you'll ever stay in.
.
And Bisbee, as most of you know... ROCKS!!!
