Minor traffic stop led to 'murder' of Patrick Lyoya, NAACP says

Source: MLIvE.com

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- NAACP leaders are questioning how what appeared to be a minor traffic infraction escalated into something one leader called “straight up murder.”

They want the officer who shot 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya in Southeast Grand Rapids on April 4 charged criminally, fired immediately and decertified as an officer.

NAACP leaders talked Wednesday, April 13 about the release of police and cell phone videos that showed Lyoya’s vehicle being stopped in the area of Nelson Avenue SE and Griggs Street for a license plate that did not match his vehicle. The traffic stop was followed by the officer’s attempt to take Lyoya into custody, with a fight erupting between the two.

“It was unnecessary. It was lethal force and, in our opinion, it was just straight up murder,” Mayers said.

Family wants world to see footage of Grand Rapids fatal police shooting

A Black man n Grand Rapids was shot by police after a traffic stop. The man’s father says the video shows he was executed from behind, at point blank range, while laying face down on the ground.

Peter Lyoya and Siku say Michigan State Police showed them cruiser dashcam video this week. They claim the officer shot Patrick Lyoya in the back of the head while he laid face down on the ground.

“I could not watch that video twice. I cried,” Siku said.

During the march, Siku asked two men to demonstrate what they saw on the video. Marchers gathered in silence around the men on the ground as Siku asked people to remember the moment.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom committed to releasing the video by noon on Friday, April 15.

“I don’t want the video to be edited,” Peter Lyoya said. “I want people to see the way my son was killed. I want the entire world to see how my son was executed.”

Following the march, a candlelight vigil was held for Patrick Lyoya at the Center for Community Transformation.

(Grand Rapids Michigan has had a series of police shootings that are questionable over the recent past.)

If the video us what the father says- it’s a video of his some being shot in the back if the head, face down in the street. This is going to be huge news when the video comes out.
