That is total bullsh*t!’: Glenn Greenwald and Iraq War vet square off on Snowden leaks

Friday night’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher got heated when Iran and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s Paul Rieckhoff squared off against investigative journalist and author Glenn Greenwald over leaks made by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

Rieckhoff raised the question, “If Snowden did release these documents and it did, we find out, perform a service, he’s still hiding out in Russia. It would be a different story if he came back and made his case and faced the music.”

“That is total bullshit,” said Greenwald. “Let me explain to you, why would Edward Snowden want to come back to the United States, a country that has a systematic attack — ?”

“Why would he hide in Russia?” demanded Rieckhoff.

“He has asylum,” countered Greenwald.

Maher read from a statement by Richard Clarke that said that as a result of the thousands of documents that Snowden has leaked, U.S. intelligence assets have been compromised and lives lost.

“There’s no whistleblower where people in government don’t say that,” said Greenwald. “It’s just propaganda.”

“You have such certainty,” said Rieckhoff, “and I respect your position, but you have such certainty. How do you know that the information that he revealed did not cost American lives? How do you know that?”

“What American lives?” Greenwald said. “Is there a single piece of evidence?”

Maher countered that if people are working undercover for U.S. intelligence, we probably never would know their names or if they died. “That’s why there’s a star on the wall” at CIA headquarters, he said.

“So we’re just supposed to take the government’s word?” Greenwald asked.

“And we’re supposed to take your word?” said Rieckhoff.

“I think,” Greenwald said, “that you should have evidence for accusations that you want to make.”

Bill Maher tells America: Like a bad ex-boyfriend, Iraq is never going to change

In his weekly “New Rules” segment, Real Time host Bill Maher did his best this week to convince Americans that Iraq is just not that into us.

Earlier in the show, he implored President Barack Obama to keep the U.S. out of Iraq’s civil war, a message that he underscored in the show’s final segment.

“Broken nations are a lot like broken people,” said Maher. “You can’t fix them.”

Amid all the calls for American forces to intervene in conflicts around the world, he went on, “maybe America is the one that needs an intervention. Maybe America needs Dr. Phil to come by and say, ‘How’s that nation building working for ya?’”

“Some nations, much like Nick Nolte’s pants,” he quipped, “are never going to change.”

He likened some nations to that one business on a block that always fails. First it’s a Quizno’s, then a nail salon, then a pawn shop.

“It’s not failing because it hates freedom,” Maher said. “It’s just a shitty location.”

“America’s like one of those women who always thinks she can ‘fix’ the bad boy,” he explained. “Vietnam, Pakistan, Somalia, these are all bad boys we couldn’t resist trying to fix.”

“We think, ‘You know, if they just got to know us,’” he said, “I know they’d straighten out.”

He then rolled video clips of Dr. Phil telling women that the men they envision and the men who they are with don’t match. “You love who you think he is,” said the TV counselor to one woman, “not who he is.”

Sure, Maher said, bad boys are exciting, “the great sex, the rug burn…the missing money from your checking account,” but in the end it’s never worth it.

Obama Gets First 3D-Printed Presidential Portrait

To his list of firsts, Barack Obama can add that he was the first U.S. President to have himself scanned and 3D printed. Obama’s 3D-printed bust and mold of his face were on display Wednesday (June 18) at the first-ever White House Maker Faire, a celebration of students and entrepreneurs who are using technology to create new products and businesses, according to the Smithsonian Institution. A team of Smithsonian 3D digital-imaging specialists scanned the president earlier this year. They used the University of Southern California’s Light Stage face scanner to capture Obama’s face in high resolution,



and handheld 3D scanners and SLR cameras to create a reconstruction of his bust. Next, experts in 3D graphics at the software company Autodesk produced high-resolution models, which were printed using 3D Systems’ selective laser sintering printers. The scans and printed models will become part of a collection at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, which showcases multiple images of each president. The 3D portraits will be added to the museum’s current collection of works representing Obama.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio dismisses his own obsession with Obama’s birth certificate

In an exclusive interview with The Washington Times, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced that he would not be running for governor because he has too many “sensitive investigations going on — including the president’s birth certificate.”

He claimed that he was asked to run for governor “a couple weeks ago,” but declined because “I’d have to resign, because I’m not going to leave this office to somebody coming in, when I have sensitive investigations going on — including the president’s birth certificate. I haven’t finished that yet.”

Rusty Humphries then asked, “Is that one of the reasons they’re dumping illegals in your backyard?”

“I don’t know if that’s the reason,” Arpaio responded. “I’m such a high profile guy on immigration.”

“Do you still believe,” Humphries interrupted to ask, “that the president was not born in the country — that there’s a problem with the birth certificate?”

“I don’t care where he was born,” Arpaio said. “That has nothing to do with it. I’m concerned with a foraged — forged government document. From Day 1, I’ve been investigating that. Now, we have to find out who’s behind that.”

“And I’m getting close to that,” he continued. “Anyone else, they’d go to jail!”

He also claimed that the only reason anyone in Congress is concerned with legal issues concerning immigration is that “they need to pacify the Hispanic community.”

Mentally ill prisoner died hooded, strapped to chair while guards chatted nearby, suit claims

The family of a mentally ill Colorado prison inmate who died while in custody has filed a lawsuit alleging guards stood around joking while failing to attend to his medical needs following a seizure caught on tape.

According to the lawsuit, at least 16 state prison staff members did nothing to help Christopher Lopez, 35, as he suffered seizures and died after being restrained in a chair, as documented in the video provided to 9News.

According to his family, Lopez, who had just been released from nine-and-a-half months in solitary confinement, suffered from bipolar schizoaffective disorder.

Two days after being released from solitary, he was discovered by jailers lying on the floor in his cell barely conscious. Instead of calling for medical assistance, the guards allegedly put Lopez in chains and placed a ‘spit hood’ over his head before strapping him into a chair.

While restrained by the chair, Lopez can be seen in the video having one or two grand mal seizures before slumping over. It is not clear if any staff saw the seizures as the video camera filming him appeared to be unmanned.

Prison staff eventually took Lopez out of the chair and placed him on his side on the ground, with one officer saying, “”Holler if anything changes,” and another replying, “Like, if he stops breathing?”
