“China’s pollution is at an unbearable stage”

China’s most popular social media site has been quickly censoring posts that criticize the country’s response to the horrifying smog problem, according to various media reports.

In a rare show of defiance against the Chinese government, the country’s state-run media site last week published two critical articles on the government’s environmental failures. Both posts were shared on Sina Weibo — a site most commonly likened to “China’s Twitter” — but were quickly deleted, both the New York Times and Reuters reported.

China Central Television’s articles criticize both the public’s and the government’s response to the smog, which this week reached 20 times the level considered safe by the World Health Organization. The first article starts with the line “Does anyone still care about Beijing’s smog?” while the other was titled “Beijing municipal government, don’t hide behind the thick smog.”

“The people have grown numb,” the channel wrote, saying the government must “protect its territory and not act ignorant.”

Russian state television cancels Oscars coverage over Ukraine unrest

Russian state television announced Sunday it was cancelling live coverage of the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood because of the crisis over Ukraine.

Channel One, the most watched station in Russia, was scheduled to show the glitzy movie awards event between 4 am (midnight GMT) and 9 am Moscow time.

"Due to the large amount of news concerning the situation in Crimea and the Ukraine, and the audience's rising interest in news programmes, Channel One considers it impossible to air the Oscars ceremony for five hours, particularly in the morning."

It said it would instead broadcast the annual Hollywood extravaganza at midnight on Monday.

CBS News reports that Obama administration officials want an end to the targeted killings, believed by many to be the work of Mossad.

The United States is reportedly pressuring Israel to stop assassinating Iranian nuclear scientists, a number of whom have been mysteriously killed in a campaign thought to be carried out by Mossad.

According to CBS News, Obama administration officials have communicated to Israeli intelligence their wish for a cessation of the targeting of scientists in order to allow diplomatic negotiations aimed at rolling back Iran’s nuclear program to take their course.

While Israel has never officially acknowledged that it was behind the killings, it is widely believed that Mossad agents carried out the hits in an effort to slow down Iran’s nuclear development as well as to deter the country’s top scientific minds from cooperating with the government’s clandestine weapons program.

The Deficit Fell Faster Last Year Than Any Time Since The End Of World War II

The federal budget deficit fell faster last year than in any year since the end of World War II, according to a Treasury Department report on Thursday. It declined from $1.1 trillion in 2012 to $680 billion in 2013.

That represents the smallest deficit since 2008 in nominal terms. It’s now 4.1 percent of GDP, dropping from a high of more than 10 percent during the depths of the recession. It’s less than half of what it was in 2009, when the recession ended.

The good news is that part of the decline is being driven by higher tax revenue as the economy slowly recovers. “Growth in tax revenue from an improving economy accounted for much of the decline in the deficit,” Annie Lowrey at the New York Times reports. Tax revenue increased $234 billion over last year, reaching $2.8 trillion, growth of about 12.9 percent.

But austerity also played a big role. Part of the increase in tax revenue is also due to higher tax rates, including the lapse of the payroll tax cut. The deficit also fell thanks to depressed government spending. “Over the same period, total government spending barely grew, rising to $3.9 trillion, from $3.8 trillion a year earlier,” Lowrey notes. Federal budget outlays fell as a proportion of GDP from 22 percent to 20.8 percent. Since 2011, Congress has enacted $2.4 trillion in deficit reduction, nearly three-quarters of which has come from spending cuts. Government investment in long-term priorities has fallen below any level seen since World War II.
