The Democrat in North Carolina’s disputed 9th Congressional District election wants to subpoena nearly 50 witnesses for the state board of elections’ hearing scheduled for Jan. 11.
But state Republicans vowed to sue Gov. Roy Cooper if he tries to appoint Republican members to the interim board that would be tasked with holding that hearing.
Just another day in the wild 9th district.
Republican Mark Harris won an apparent victory by 905 votes over Democrat Dan McCready on Nov. 6, but the State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement twice declined to certify the election citing voting irregularities among absentee ballots in Bladen and Robeson counties. The nine-member board scheduled a hearing on Jan. 11, but a three-judge panel dissolved the board on Dec. 28, leaving no board in place at the moment for the potential hearing.

'Nothing short of inhumane': Union sues Trump administration over shutdown

A federal employees union filed a lawsuit Monday against the Trump administration, alleging that the partial government shutdown is illegally forcing more than 400,000 federal employees to work without pay.
The partial shutdown began Dec. 22.
Since then, many federal agencies have temporarily closed and delayed worker compensation indefinitely. Even so, employees deemed “essential” or “excepted” have been expected to come to work. The suit asked that the named plaintiffs and others with the same classification be paid owed wages.
“It’s outrageous the government expects them to work without knowing when they’ll get their next paycheck,” lead attorney Heidi Burakiewicz said in an interview with The Washington Post.

Yesterday, writing for Politico, Blake Hounshell and Daniel Lippman reported on Trump's desperate search for a new Secretary of Defense by noting that "The chatter among people familiar with the selection… is that few outside the administration want the job of replacing Jim Mattis as defense secretary, given the president’s decision to yank American troops out of Syria and other recent moves." The other day retired 4-star General Stanley McChristal explained why he wouldn't work for Trump. It just took Cadet Bonespurs a matter of hours-- and a few snorts of chopped-up Adderall-- to lash back like a rabid dog:
We may be stuck with another actor playing the part for a while, crooked Boeing executive Patrick Shanahan. Far right Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Generals David Petraeus and Jack Keane turned down the job. Petraeus told the BBC that his views don’t align with President Trump’s on foreign affairs. "I think there does have to be policy alignment and I’m not sure that exists, I’m afraid." I'm sure this tweet from the asshole-in-chief went over especially well with the generals yesterday:
So if Trump can't get Shanahan confirmed, he could turn to Dan Coats or... does Jared have time in his busy schedule? You know what would be hilarious? If Trump winds up appointing the first closet case to run the Pentagon, Lindsey Graham-- even though the two of them don't see eye to eye on much to do with defense or foreign policy. Señor T spent New Year's Eve day bathing in self-pity and tweeting his unhinged and bathetic bullshit. He's got to be removed and any member of Congress who doesn't help needs to be defeated ASAP.

GOP Congressman: Trump Is 'A Wealthy Man' & if He Wants a Wall He Should Fork Over Some Cash for It
U.S. Rep. Walter Jones is calling on President Trump to put his money where his mouth is – at least where the wall is concerned. The North Carolina Republican says it's "morally irresponsible" to build the wall by increasing the debt, and wants Trump to pay for at least part of it.
"As a wealthy man, the president might consider pledging some of his own funds," Congressman Jones said in a statement on his government website, as Roll Call first reported. "Whatever it takes, just so long as we don’t add to the debt that is bankrupting our great country."
Jones says a "fiscally responsible plan to pay for" improved security on the southern border, and insists any compromise "should be paid for without adding to the deficit or the debt."
“America’s national debt is nearly $22 trillion. Next year our annual deficit is projected to top $1 trillion. We can’t afford to keep financing the provision of government services by borrowing more and more money. It’s morally irresponsible and it’s got to stop,” Jones added.

State workers to get new digs at the Centre of Tallahassee in 2019
This time next year more than 2,000 state workers will have completed a cross-town shuffle of their offices to The Centre of Tallahassee mall.
The departments of State, Health, and Children and Families have signed leases to move workers into the redesigned and refurbished former Tallahassee Mall along North Monroe Street near Interstate 10.
“The state is getting brand new turnkey space,” said John McNeill of NAI Talcor, which handles leases for the northwest Tallahassee complex. “New roofs, new electrical systems, it is effectively a 100-percent brand new space.”
The Department of Children and Families is the big fish that McNeill landed for the Centre. DCF’s lease at Winewood on Blairstone Road expires next December. About 1,300 workers will occupy most of what is remaining of the former mall’s interior space.

Parkland survivors respond to Louis C.K. after comedian mocked their activism in new comedy routine
FORT LAUDERDALE — Parkland students and at least one parent of a victim slammed comedian Louis C.K. for cracking jokes about school shooting survivors.
In audio laced with vulgarities that was leaked Sunday from a stand-up comedy routine that reportedly took place Dec. 16, the comedian appeared to mock Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students for their gun control activism instead of being “normal” trouble-making teens.
“They testify in front of Congress, these kids ... (expletives) ... ,” he said, according to the leaked audio. “You’re not interesting because you went to a high school where kids got shot. Why does that mean I have to listen to you? How does that make you interesting? You didn’t get shot, you pushed some fat kid in the way — now I gotta listen to you talking?”
The recording, which surfaced Sunday on YouTube, was said to be from a 48-minute set he performed Dec. 16 at Governor’s Comedy Club in Levittown, N.Y., according to Variety.com.

37,000 victims still paying $6.3 million monthly for 'scam' health insurance
While the Federal Trade Commission pursues permanent closure of “sham” health insurer Simple Health Plans LLC, nearly 37,000 consumers are left in limbo — paying $6.3 million in monthly premiums for insurance plans the FTC says are nearly worthless.
But the consumer protection agency can’t help the consumers unless and until it convinces a federal judge to keep the Hollywood-based company closed and in a receiver’s custody until the case is resolved.
Simple Health has been shut down since Oct. 31, when it was served with a temporary restraining order.
The FTC is accusing the company of running a boiler room operation that misled tens of thousands of consumers into believing they were buying major medical insurance covering pre-existing conditions, hospital stays, in-network visits to primary care physicians and specialists, prescription drugs, and other services required by the Affordable Care Act.
In reality, the consumers were sold a package of discount plans plus limited-benefit hospital indemnity coverage that paid a maximum of $3,200 a year while Simple Health Plans, its co-founder Steven J. Dorfman, and affiliated companies collected more than $150 million in commissions since 2013, the FTC says.

State appealing 'liquor wall' decision
State regulators are appealing an administrative law judge’s ruling that could allow retailers to sell hard liquor in their main stores, instead of in separate stores as they do now.
The Department of Business Professional Regulation (DBPR), which oversees booze sales through its Division of Alcoholic Beverages And Tobacco (ABT), on Friday filed a notice of appeal to the 1st District Court of Appeal.
“At the request of the next administration, DBPR filed a notice of appeal as a courtesy to give them additional time to review this case and policy impacts,” Ashley Cook, press secretary for Gov. Rick Scott, told Florida Politics Friday night.
A request for comment has been sent to Dave Vasquez, a spokesman for Governor-elect Ron DeSantis‘ transition team.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes and her husband announced the birth of their son Wednesday.
Crawford “Ford” Case Grimes was born at 8:17 a.m. Wednesday and weighed 7 lbs, 3 oz.
This is the first child for Grimes and her husband, Andrew.
Grimes, who has spoken publicly about she and her husband’s struggle with infertility, says they have prayed for this day for many years.
“We are overjoyed to welcome Ford into our lives,” she said in the announcement. “We cannot thank enough our amazing team of doctors and nurses over these past several years. We are grateful to everyone who has offered their constant support and encouragement as it has meant more than you know.”

NYC ban on plastic foam food containers takes effect
NEW YORK -- The new year means no more plastic foam coffee cups, takeout containers or packing peanuts in most places in the nation's largest city.
New York City's long-planned ban took effect on Tuesday.
The prohibition includes food containers and loose packing fill made from what's known as expanded polystyrene. Exceptions include butcher-counter containers for raw meat.
City lawmakers approved the ban in 2013, but a lawsuit from the restaurant industry held it off for years. A judge ruled this past June that it could go forward.
