Katy man arrested in terrorism case

Federal authorities have arrested a Katy man on charges that he plotted to blow up government buildings, rob banks and kill law enforcement officers.

Robert James Talbot Jr, 42, was arrested following an eight-month undercover investigation that took Joint Terrorism Task Force agents to the streets as well as the Web, according to an affidavit filed in federal court.

Talbot, originally of Batavia, N.Y., is due to appear before a federal magistrate Friday to be formally advised of the charges.

According to the affidavit, Talbot wanted to recruit five to six "like-minded individuals" to collaborate in his plots.

Oregon Mother accused of killing 4-year-old son she thought was gay

An Oregon woman on trial for the murder of her 4-year-old son believed the boy was gay and that was a motive behind the deadly beatings, a prosecutor said.

Jessica Dutro’s son Zachary died in August 2012, days after collapsing at the homeless shelter where his family was living southwest of Portland.

Washington County Judge Don Letourneau ruled Wednesday, after jurors were released for the day, that a Facebook message from Dutro to her boyfriend was admissible evidence, The Oregonian newspaper reported.

In the message, Dutro told her boyfriend, Brian Canady, that Zachary was “facing the wall” because he had made her angry.

American Eagle pilots vote down contract, with 70 percent voting 'no'

American Eagle Airlines pilots handily defeated a contract that American Airlines Group management had insisted was needed to guarantee the carrier’s future flying, the Air Line Pilots Association said.

“The Eagle pilots made a clear choice today, and it was not an easy one,” union leader Bill Sprague said after the votes were counting. Sprague is chairman of ALPA’s master executive council at American Eagle.

“Despite threats from AAG management that they would seek other express carriers to conduct our flying, today’s vote demonstrates that the demands for contract concessions were not acceptable,” Sprague said. “Today’s vote clearly shows that pilots can, and will, vote against any agreement that is not in their best interests.”

The master executive council voted 5-4 in February not to send the contract out for a vote. However, under pressure from management and some pilots, the MEC voted earlier this month to let pilots vote. The council’s vote to do so was 3-0, with six abstentions.

State legislators meet on Texas A&M campus to discuss pressing issues

Local state representatives in the Texas House and Senate gathered on the Texas A&M campus Thursday afternoon to reflect on the last legislative session and what the future holds for hot-button issues facing Texans.

State Sen. Dr. Charles Schwertner and State Reps. John Raney and Kyle Kacal (all Republicans ) were joined by Evan Smith, the Texas Tribune's CEO and editor-in-chief, for a discussion covering everything from public education to immigration to deregulating tuition for higher education.

The conversation began with spending on public education. Texas ranks 46th in the nation in spending per pupil, spending about $2,500 less than the national average per student. Schwertner said the issue of public education is the highest priority for the state, and Raney said the state should focus more on outcome than money.

Kacal lauded House Bill 5, which lowered the number of state standardized tests for high school students before graduation and changes the courses needed for a diploma, pointing to the opportunities for increased exploration of vocational education.

One other notable paragraph in the article:

Kacal said he thinks the state is in a "good spot," since the most recent session was able to balance the budget and the state continues to experience economic growth. Schwertner said he's not for raising taxes and stated that the state's economic success can be attributed to its tax policy and tort reform.

84-Year-Old Oak Cliff Woman Says Her HOA Filed a Lien Against Her for Feeding Two Cats

Shirlee Perry doesn't get out much anymore. Eighty-four years old with ailing legs, going outside usually is too much of a challenge, so she spends her days mostly watching TV at her Oak Cliff condo and caring for the two semi-feral cats that were born near her back porch and now practically live there.

She used to leave food for the wildlife in the woods behind her condo, just like her neighbors did when she moved in 25 years ago, but her HOA, the Wedglea Place Owners Association, asked her to stop. She also agreed to quit leaving the cat food out overnight, an arrangement that lasted for a time. But when they recently told her to stop feeding the cats entirely, that was a bridge too far.

The order came in the midst of a long-simmering feud between Perry and her neighbors. In 2012, she reported to police that a neighbor stole the three bowls she kept on her porch. ("No, no, no!" she yelled through the window; "Yes, yes, yes!" the man replied.) It was followed, according to Perry, by a series of fines. Under Wedglea Place Owners Association regulations, fine for rule violations are staircased, ranging from $50 for the first infraction to $250 for the fifth and beyond.

Perry, who insists that she submits her HOA dues on time every month, thought the association had stepped over a line and was being unreasonable. She refused to pay.

Dallas Lawyer Sues Large Chunk of North Texas Lacrosse Community For Not Playing His Son

DISCLAIMER: Billy Munck plays lacrosse at my alma mater, Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Southwestern University holds the distinction of fielding the first varsity lacrosse team (NCAA Div. III) in Texas.

I will withhold comment on the merits of the lawsuit.

Pop quiz: A young high school athlete isn't getting much playing time. As a parent, do you a) Encourage your teenager to buckle down and work harder; b) Have a few choice words with the coach; or c) Suggest that, you know, maybe academic decathlon might be a better fit for his or her talents?

If you chose any of the options above, you haven't been initiated into the rarefied Dallas lacrosse scene. If you had, you'd know that the correct answer is actually d) Sue for damages.

That's at least the one Dallas trial lawyer William Munck is choosing. On Tuesday he filed a federal racketeering lawsuit against Dallas Lacrosse Academy LLC and a half dozen local lacrosse coaches alleging they were shaking down families in exchange for playing their kids and giving them other advantages.

To understand the suit, which weighs in at a hefty 39 pages, it helps to understand how the local youth lacrosse community is structured. On the one hand, you have teams that have formed over the past decade or two at elite prep schools (e.g. St. Mark's, Greenhill, the Episcopal School of Dallas) and upper-crust suburbs (e.g. Plano, Highland Park, Frisco); on the other, are independent organizations like DLA (now C2C Lacrosse) and StickStar.

Greg Abbott Intervenes In Suit Involving "Sociopathic Neurosurgeon"

If Greg Abbott has his way, there will be no justice for victims of a Dallas neurosurgeon that killed two patients and paralyzed four in a series of botched surgeries.

As the Dallas Morning News reports, Texas' Attorney General Greg Abbott filed motions this week to intervene in three federal lawsuits brought against Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano on behalf of former patients of Dr. Christopher Duntsch. The patients allege that Baylor Plano knew Dr. Duntsch was a dangerous surgeon and it could have prevented him from killing and maiming patients.

The suits also challenge the constitutionality of a state law that requires plaintiffs to prove that Baylor Plano intended to harm patients. That law is part of the Texas Legislature's 2003 tort reform package. The Legislature removed the term "gross negligence" from the definition of legal malice.

The Texas Medical Board suspended Duntsch's license in June of 2013 after physicians complained about him by using phrases like, "the worst surgeon I've ever seen." One doctor that compared Duntsch to Hannibal Lecter, "three times in eight minutes." In a very good article examining the health of Texas' system for dealing with dangerous doctors, the Texas Observer in August of last year gave a descriptive account of Dr. Duntsch's maiming and killing of patients:

The first three surgeries of Duntsch's trial took place on three consecutive days in July 2012, a month after the first complaint against him with the Texas Medical Board. The first surgery went fine. In the second, while doing a cervical fusion on a woman named Floella Brown, Duntsch "removed a bone from an area that was not required by any clinical or anatomical standards, resulting in injury to the vertebral artery," according to Texas Medical Board records. Brown was later found unresponsive in her hospital room and staff couldn't contact Duntsch for 90 minutes, according to those records. Brown had suffered excessive blood loss and a stroke, according to the agency. By the time she was transferred to UT Southwestern Medical Center later that day, she was brain dead. As she lay dying, Duntsch performed his third surgery, on a woman named Mary Efurd. Another spinal fusion; another routine procedure. Efurd woke up after surgery in horrible pain, barely able to move her legs."

Ben Carson resistant to voters' campaign pleas

Noted former neurosurgeon will speak at Operation HOPE banquet in Lubbock on Saturday

Dr. Benjamin Carson has had a busy year since retiring June 30.

The former neurosurgeon’s day-to-day schedule is filled with public speeches and appearances throughout the country, but campaigning for president is not on the agenda, he said.

“That’s the things that people are doing on their own,” Carson said via phone Wednesday, March 26. “I have no desire personally to run for office.”

But despite his desire to avoid politics, thousands of people are encouraging his run for office through social media and online petitions.
