On Tuesday, I went to sleep in Texas, but on Wednesday, I woke up in a Banana Republic.
Over one thousand people were denied the opportunity to testify about HB5 in the House Committee hearings on Tuesday evening, even though the special session will last thirty days. To add even more insult, anti-choice testimonies were unethically stacked together by the Texas Tea Party dominated committee. Thank you to Representative Farrar for pointing out the dishonesty. Add this offense to fake time-stamping, voter suppression, and re-drawing partisan maps. In kindergarten we called it cheating; in Texas, it’s called politics.
Last night’s hearing revealed that the author of HB5, Representative Jodie Laubenberg (remember her? the one who claimed that ER rape kits could terminate a pregnancy by “cleaning out” a victim?), didn’t even know the average price of an abortion in a state that she represents. (By the way, it's $250 but will increase to around $1200 as a result of HB5) One witness testified that Laubenberg voted to defund prenatal care funds. Really inspires confidence, doesn’t it?
It can’t get any more Banana Republic than that! O.Henry’s famous phrase in his work, Cabbages and Kings describes a politically unstable country, a citizenry consisting of a large impoverished class ruled by plutocracy of big corporations and the military.
Sounding familiar? That’s because it’s not limited to third-world countries whose chief product is bananas anymore.

Old Angry White Guys are Destroying the Republican Party

The company of old, angry, white men is out in force. Their efforts to return women to the 1340s, to insult the Hispanic voting bloc by making “brown the new pink”, and insisting that we continue to kill our young men and women as a form of international pride are setting the foundation for vote backlash in 2014 and 2016.
Grasping at imaginary and fabricated scandals their forces are being exposed for what they are...selfish promotion and corporate overseeing. Carl Isaac has quietly withdrawn his protest after the release of the full transcript of his investigation revealed that, not only did the White House not have any involvement in the purported IRS scandal, but that it was a conservative Republican that started the intrusive investigation of tea party groups.
This group of old, angry, white men is displaying their senseless whining in attacking Hillary Clinton for “being too old” for political office. Really, Reagan was 80 when he became President. John McCain was no spring chicken. These old guys criticize Hillary for her pant suits. That is all they have.
Other bloggers on lubbockonline would like you to believe that Senator Wendy Davis likes to stir-fry fetuses while proclaiming her love of Satan. The old angry white guy would like women to stay at home, tending to their man’s meals and submitting to what men believe “is in their best interests”. The Pro-Life till birth movement wants to eliminate all birth control, to eliminate women’s health services and sexual education, and then turn around and refuse to provide help to struggling single mothers who are seen only as welfare cheats.
These old, angry, white men (who I do not believe represent the true core of the Republican party) want to limit the involvement of those who don’t fit their view. With the announcement from Texas Attorney General Mark Abbott that the state will go forward with photo ID cards we will see how this affects those who must travel significant distances to obtain one from their DPS office. This effort will expose hatred that these old men have for skins of any color but white.

Ex-doc Michael Brown to Plead Guilty in Flight Attendant-Choking Case
Ex-surgeon Michael "Suck My Dick" Brown is planning to plead guilty to a count of interfering with a flight crew in a Miami federal court July 16.
Brown originally pleaded not guilty to the charge, stemming from his alleged assault in January of female flight attendants on a flight from London to Miami.
His Florida attorney, Alvin Entin, told Hair Balls that "the recommendations are going to be that he receive time served....there'll be no jail involved with this thing."
Brown was facing 2-8 months incarceration under maximum sentencing guidelines, Entin said.

Government OKs New Mexico natural gas pipeline
LBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The federal government has given the green light to a proposal to build 234 miles of pipeline to transport natural gas liquids from one corner of New Mexico to the other and ultimately to markets in South Texas.
The Bureau of Land Management’s approval of the Western Expansion Pipeline III project comes just a week after President Barack Obama unveiled his plan for combating climate change, part of which included boosting the role of natural gas in energy production.

“These projects aren’t just built for the conditions at the moment. They’re long-term investments,” said Wally Drangmeister, a spokesman for the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association. “I think it’s a good sign that some investment is going in that will support the state.”
The $320 million project will transport natural gas liquid products from northwestern New Mexico to a hub in Hobbs in the southeastern corner of the state and ultimately to Texas to help meet existing and future demand.

The band thought that nobody noticed their work and retired until more than two decades later they learned that they had developed a following. It is a somewhat rare album to find so check your garages because it could be worth $800.

Texas A&M researchers working to improve early detection of oral cancer
The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 2.5 percent of new cancer cases diagnosed this year will be found in the mouth. That's more than 41,000 people who will face countless tests and several rounds of chemotherapy, surgery or radiation to combat oral cancer.
Kristen Maitland, a professor of biomedical engineering at Texas A&M University, is trying to make that percentage of patients go up -- in a good way.
Maitland is the principal investigator on a research project that could boost early detection of oral cancer. Maitland and a team of researchers are developing an imaging system that combines two cameras to detect cancerous and pre-cancerous cells in the mouth. The project started with testing on hamsters and is now in the early stages of testing on human tissue samples.
The goal is to create a new screening tool that can diagnose oral cancer with greater accuracy.

Illnesses prompt wide Whole Foods cheese recall

NEW YORK (AP) — Whole Foods Market Inc. is recalling Crave Brothers Les Freres cheese in response to an outbreak of a bacterial infection that has sickened people in several states and killed at least one person.
Whole Foods says the cheese may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. It was sold in 30 states and Washington DC under names including Les Freres and Crave Brothers Les Freres. The cheese was cut and packaged in clear plastic wrap and sold with Whole Foods Market scale labels. The company is posting signs in its stores to inform customers about the recall.
Officials said cases have been identified in at least three states. Public health officials in Illinois said Wednesday that one resident became sick after eating contaminated cheese in May. Minnesota officials said Thursday that one elderly person in the state died and another was hospitalized after illnesses linked to the cheese. Both of those illnesses happened in June.
Listeria can lead to severe illness for women who are pregnant or people who have weakened immune systems. In healthy individuals, it can cause symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Former Phi Slama Jama member suing University of Houston
Michael Young, a member of Phi Slama Jama and former director of basketball operations at the University of Houston, has filed a lawsuit to have his employment contract with the school rescinded.
In the lawsuit, filed this week in Harris County district court, Young alleges that UH asked him to "engage in fraud and to engage in the illegal act of accepting money without performing a service and to violate NCAA rules."
UH strongly refuted the accusations in a prepared statement released Friday afternoon.
"University practice is to not comment on pending litigation, however, the University is looking forward to vigorously defending its actions."
Young left UH on May 31, ending a more than two-decade relationship with the university, after refusing reassignment in a community service role within the athletic department. He had been employed by UH for 16 years, including the last seven as director of basketball operations.
