When the Lewisville City Council voted last week ago to effectively ban Redneck Heaven's signature Anything But Clothes Day -- a move that garnered coverage in outlets ranging from local alt-weekly blogs to iconic women's magazines -- the breastaurant didn't complain. It celebrated.
"My girls made it in Cosmo!!!" Jenni, the local chain's marketing coordinator wrote on Facebook. "The story is laughable at best. BUT this just means more people will hear about us!"
The number of potential Redneck Heaven patrons who read Cosmopolitan is debatable, but her point is well taken. Inspiring a local government crackdown on your breastaurant because your servers are just too damn naked is total genius from a marketing standpoint.
And it's about to happen again. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram brings the news this morning that the Fort Worth City Council is also mulling Redneck Heaven-inspired legislation.

An example of subliminal messaging against the ACA
I was reading the newspaper from the region of the state where I was raised and I encountered the following article that pertains to controlling book inventories at small public libraries. Note the headline and the opening paragraph:

AT THE height of the 2010 election, politicians warned that President Obama’s health care plan would result in the formation of “death panels” to decide who would live and who would die.
If you want to see such a process in action, visit – not a hospital, but a public library – the Joe Barnhart Bee County Library, for instance.
Its next book sale is in mid-August, and Director Cynthia Blatherwick already is at work deciding which books will lose their place on the shelves and be consigned to the sale counter.
It’s a complex task known by the acronym CREW: continuous review, evaluation and weeding.

FBI Searches Home Of Former Collin Street Bakery Official in Corsicana; $17 million allegedly stolen
The FBI declined to comment Thursday on the reason for its search of the home of former Collin Street bakery comptroller Sandy Jenkins Wednesday in Corsicana.
The search may be related to allegations Jenkins stole nearly $17 million from the company over a period of about eight years.
Neighbors said Thursday agents removed a number of documents from the house and seized two luxury cars during the daylong search.
The Corsicana Daily Sun, which broke the story of the search Wednesday on its website, reported that agents spent the day Wednesday searching Jenkins’ home.

DA receives Texas Ranger report on former West paramedic

Texas Rangers have finished and submitted to McLennan County’s district attorney a report about a former West paramedic’s arrest for possession of bomb-making components three weeks after the April 17 fertilizer plant explosion.
Bryce Ashley Reed, 31, returned Friday to the Jack Harwell Detention Center after a court-ordered six-week evaluation at a federal medical facility in Fort Worth.
District Attorney Abel Reyna confirmed that Texas Rangers brought him a 6-inch-thick spiral notebook containing the contents of their investigation of Reed.
Reyna said he has not read the file and does not know yet if the contents are confined to the possession charge or if they address or clear Reed of any link to the explosion.

Friday Night Catnip: Apocalypse - Apocalypse (1969)
Pardon the delay in posting Friday Night Catnip, but "Episode 420" of Family Guy is on Cartoon Network tonight. Therefore, I decided to sit through the musical scene of "A Bag of Weed" by Brian and Stewie. 
This week the catnip is Apocalypse, a German psychedelic rock band which existed from 1966 to 1969, also known as “Die anderen”. They released two albums, “Kannibal Komix” in 1968 and “Apocalypse” in 1969. With the “Apocalypse” album the band developed and refined their music toward psychedelic rock without denying the psych pop roots found on “Kannibal Komix”.

What wisdom did the aspiring potential 2016 Republican presidential nominee have to share with the world this time? Gay marriage will lead to hate speech laws and the persecution of pastors and Christians.
"Everywhere I go people are afraid for the future of our country;" Cruz says during the interview. "I think we're at the edge of a precipice. If we keep going down this path, we're risking losing our nation; we're risking losing the incredible oasis of liberty."
"If you look at other nations that have gone down the road towards gay marriage, that's the next step of where it gets enforced," Cruz told David Brody during the interview aired by the Christian television network on Friday. "It gets enforced against Christian pastors who decline to perform gay marriages, who speak out and preach biblical truths on marriage, that has been defined elsewhere as hate speech, as inconsistent with the enlightened view of government."
"I think there is no doubt that the advocates who are driving this effort in the United States want to see us end up in that same place," Cruz further argues.

CSCOPE Takes Another Awful Spin Around the News Cycle
Near the end of the regular session, Sen. Dan Patrick, chair of the Senate Education Committee, headlined a “Mission Accomplished” press conference. He stood with other conservative Republicans to proclaim the end of the vile “CSCOPE era” in Texas, freeing us all from that long Texan nightmare of the last 20 years.
The state’s regional education service centers, which sell the curriculum management program to almost 900 of Texas’ thousand-plus school districts, agreed to discontinue the classroom lessons, placating tea party groups who believed that CSCOPE muddied children’s minds with critical thinking exercises about U.S. history, religion and gender. (One lesson did untold damage by placing “communism” at the top of a list of economic models, rather than at the bottom.) Our future, once again, was safe.
But that victory suddenly turned very hollow last week, when Texas Education Agency general counsel David Anderson told the State Board of Education that CSCOPE’s lessons were in the public domain now—accessible to anyone at all, for free.
The latest chapter in this controversy comes just in time for the lieutenant governor’s race, a fine chance to out-charm the right-wing fringe. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst vented his outrage over CSCOPE (and how the Internet works) on conservative activist Alice Linahan’s web radio show on Monday.

Prosecutors seeking death penalty against former JP in Kaufman County prosecutor slayings
Eric and Kim Williams remain in the Kaufman County Jail on multimillion-dollar bonds.
Prosecutors announced today that they will seek the death penalty against a former justice of the peace who is accused in the revenge-driven killings of the Kaufman County district attorney, his wife and a top assistant.
Special prosecutors Toby Shook and Bill Wirskye made the announcement during a court hearing this morning before Dallas County District Judge Michael Snipes, who was appointed to preside over the capital murder cases against Eric and Kim Williams.
Wirskye said they have not decided whether to seek the death penalty against Kim Williams.
“We anticipate making that decision at the appropriate time,” he said.

Greg Abbott invokes states rights in defending Texas against federal voting-rights efforts
Republican governor candidate Greg Abbott says if the Obama administration gets its way, the Justice Department will be regulating Texas elections for at least the next ten years. “They are trying to deny Texas our sovereign rights,” Abbott told Fox News on Friday. Abbott warned that the administration’s decision to go to court to make Texas get federal approval before making changes to election laws could block implementation of the state’s new photo-ID requirement for voters. Critics say the requirement discriminates against minorities and would have the effect of suppressing the vote of blacks and Hispanics. Abbott defends it, saying it’s aimed at curbing voter fraud.
The U.S. Supreme Court last month gutted a portion of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Abbott immediately announced the decision allows Texas to start requiring voters to show an official photo ID in order to vote. Attorney General Eric Holder’s announcement Thursday that the government wants to put Texas under federal scrutiny could delay that. A federal court has found the state’s voter-ID law racially discriminatory.
Abbott has made voter-ID an important part of his appeal to Republican voters. Several years ago, he announced there was an “epidemic” of voter fraud in Texas and he launched an investigation. At the time, the attorney general found fewer than three dozen cases to prosecute – all against Democrats, all but one against blacks or Hispanics. Of those, two-thirds were technical violations in which voters were eligible, votes were properly cast and no vote was changed. More recently, Abbott’s office says it has filed more cases, some against Republicans.
As I wrote in a column published today, in a competitive general election, Abbott’s history of prosecuting Democrats and defending district lines that the courts have found discriminate against minorities might be an issue. Eventually, it could hamper the GOP’s outreach to minorities. But Texas is not competitive, general election state at the moment. Democrats haven’t elected anyone to statewide office since 1994. For Abbott, the voters that count are in the GOP primary where bashing the Obama administration is good politics.
