HOUSTON -- If your favorite gun store was out of ammo this morning, it's because Ted Nugent is back in town. The Motor City Madman rumbles into House of Blues tonight, and he's sure to bring the requisite shitload of guitar solos and flaming arrows with him.
And hey, that's great -- at least it was, 40 years ago. "Stranglehold" is great, sure, but "Cat Scratch Fever" was pretty stupid from the get-go, and if he's had a hit since that one, it hasn't cracked the rotation over at 107.5 The Eagle yet.
Then again, who cares? Over the last decade or so, old Ted has become far better known for the outrageous noises coming out of his mouth than for the slightly louder outrageous sounds blasting out of his amplifiers. The transplanted Texan has made his views on Democrats, immigrants, minorities and the 2nd Amendment painfully clear many times over, to the point that his right-wing blowhard act is getting as tired as his music. He's become so predictable that it's getting hard to work up much distaste for his antics, let alone outrage.
And frankly, that's no fun. That's why we here at Rocks Off have done the Nuge a solid and pulled an age-old music biz trick to out of the hat to revive a little interest -- the greatest hits package! In order to work yourself up into the proper hysterical mindset to love/loathe Nugent's show tonight, please peruse five of the most hilariously repellent and curiously hypocritical choices that Ted has made over the years. Why? Well, because that's virtually all of the entertainment we can wring out of the guy these days -- watching and waiting to see when he'll stoop to a new low.

Greg Abbott Doesn't Want Texans to Have Clean Water
In the Texas gubernatorial race, it has become clear by now that Greg Abbott is the candidate for anyone who opposes basic public safety regulations. He made that clear once again this week with his latest declarations against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its efforts to update the Clean Water Act.
On Monday, Greg Abbott threatened to sue the EPA and the Obama administration unless they back down from proposed changes to the Clean Water Act. According to the EPA, the proposals are designed to "close loopholes that leave more than half of America's streams and around 20 million acres of wetlands at risk of unchecked pollution and development." The changes are also in line with the Supreme Court's interpretation of the law.
Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped Greg Abbott from coming out against the EPA's proposal, calling it "unlawful" and a threat to property rights.
This latest threat of a lawsuit adds to Greg Abbott's growing crusade against the EPA and the federal government--a crusade that has been largely unsuccessful thus far. But Greg Abbott is still making every effort to ensure that pesky safety regulations don't stand in the way of big business.

Vince Young hired by University of Texas; starts Sept. 1
Former Texas quarterback Vince Young has been hired by the university to work with the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, the school announced Thursday.
Young, who starts Sept. 1, will help with alumni relations and focus on programs that support first-generation college students from low-income backgrounds.
As early as last spring, Young had started conversations with university administrators about a job outside of the athletic department. The American-Statesman reported on Aug. 4 that Young was close to finalizing the position that would pay him $100,000 annually.
Athletic department officials have always maintained this job was on the university side. But Young is such a widely-recognized personality on the UT campus, it’s likely he’ll continue to make appearances at football events.

Dallas “666” anti-gay tagging suspect says they are ‘act of love,’ but blames another person

A suspect in the “666? taggings that Dallas police are investigating as a hate crime turned up at Dallas police headquarters Thursday afternoon and claimed he knew the person who was responsible. He also said he agreed with what he did.
Richard Sheridan also didn’t deny that he was the person behind the taggings left on several Oak Lawn landmarks, newspapers and Dallas City Hall. When asked directly if he was denying that he spray-painted the buildings and, in some instances, streets and sidewalks, he replied: “I’m not guilty, I’m not guilty, I’m not guilty.”
The question was repeated to directly ask whether he left the “666? tags across the city. Sheridan continued to say he was not guilty and that he hadn’t committed a crime. Which is technically true: So far, Sheridan has not been charged.
But sources told our Robert Wilonsky yesterday that Sheridan, a longtime activist and local government gadfly, has been interviewed twice by detectives and is the only person who’s been questioned in connection with the vandalism.
Sheridan did take time to rip gay activists and the Dallas Voice and rant about his displeasure with gay marriage, the TV show Family Guy, pornography and city leadership. He also said the tags were “not a hate crime [but] an act of love — and a warning.”

Abbott sided against other victims of sexual assault
AUSTIN — Republican Greg Abbott, already denounced by his Democratic rival for ruling against a rape victim while on the Texas Supreme Court, sided against three other women who sued in sexual assault cases.
In five cases in which the victims had sued the assailant or a company for negligence in the attacks, Abbott decided against four during his tenure as a high court justice from 1995 to 2001, a review by The Dallas Morning News shows.
Abbott’s judicial actions have become a focal point in the race for governor, used by Democrat Wendy Davis in her first TV ad blasting him for favoring a business over a rape victim trying to sue that company.
Davis’ campaign said his decisions show a disturbing mind-set, “a consistent pattern of ruling against Texans who need him and for his old insider network.”
Abbott, elected attorney general after serving on the court, condemned the ad as a “desperate attack.”

Texas ‘sovereign citizen’ sets dumpster fire, reports self missing to set up police ambush
Police arrested a self-described “sovereign citizen” accused of shooting at police and firefighters after setting fire to a trash bin in Dallas.
Emergency crews responded to the dumpster fire about 3 p.m. Monday, when the man opened fire on officers.
Police said the gunman, who was the subject of a missing persons report filed that afternoon, threatened a babysitter who retreated into a nearby home with an 8-year-old girl.
No one was wounded by the gunfire, which struck a fire engine in the area.
Police said the man, identified as 60-year-old Douglas Leguin, called 911 to say he was part of the anti-government sovereign citizen movement.

eCollegeFinder is back with another map series, this time looking at the Oldest Colleges in Each State. Our goal was to give some of the lesser known older colleges in the nation their moment in the spotlight! We all know of historically old Ivy League schools, founded even before America was independent. But what about the states that weren’t even a blip on the map at that point? We couldn’t resist a good opportunity to do some research, so we’ve rounded up the oldest, continually operating colleges in the nation.
We couldn’t base this list purely off College Prowler’s rankings of oldest colleges, but rather used that list as a starting point and performed further research. As with many historical searches, exact dates and specifics get a little cloudy through time. eCollegeFinder did its best to sort through all of our available data to find exactly which school is oldest. In states like Massachusetts or Pennsylvania, the answer was obvious. However, in states like Arizona and North Dakota, we had to dig deeper to find the true “oldest college”.

Perry calls National Guard border deployment open-ended

BASTROP — Gov. Rick Perry said Wednesday that sending National Guard troops to the Texas-Mexico border will defend not just his home state but the entire nation from “narco-terrorists” and that he doesn’t know how long they will have to be deployed before the threat is quelled.
The Republican’s possible 2016 White House aspirations got a boost nationally last month when he ordered 1,000 National Guard troops to the border. Perry traveled to Camp Swift Army National Guard Training Center 30 miles outside Austin for a firsthand look at the training they are getting for deployment — while perhaps hoping to look presidential.
“You now are the tip of the spear protecting Americans from these cartels,” Perry told hundreds of troops in camouflage. “As they are able to get past you they could be headed to any city, any neighborhood in this country, spreading their tentacles of crime, of fear.”
Perry noted that crime committed by people in the U.S. illegally had affected not only Texas, but Iowa, South Carolina and North Carolina, all of which he’s visited recently and two of which hold early presidential voting contests.
