State Sen. Wendy Davis on Tuesday unleashed a blistering attack on rival Greg Abbott, saying the GOP nominee for governor supports policies that are hostile toward Texas women.
“The last thing Texas women need in their lives is Greg Abbott,” Davis said during a luncheon sponsored by Annie’s List, a group that supports progressive women candidates.
Davis, the Democratic nominee for governor, said that Abbott does not support equal pay for women, has ruled against rape survivors when he was on the Texas Supreme Court and stood by as a “surrogate” described incest and rape as minor issues for women considering abortion.
“If Greg Abbott spent some time in the place of those women he is so-called guarding …, maybe he’d understand how rape is not a minor issue,” she said.

Reveille handler getting boots and Aggie ring paid after throwing block
By 5 p.m. Monday, Reveille VIII made it known she was finished with the media for the day with a rare bark just five minutes into an interview. The long day started at 4 a.m. with a trip to Houston for an interview on Fox & Friends, but she wasn't the one doing the talking.
The First Lady of Aggieland's spotlight traveled up the leash to her handler, Ryan Kreider, who delivered a potentially life-saving sideline nudge to SMU wide receiver Der'rick Thompson during the second quarter of the Aggies-Mustangs matchup in Dallas on Saturday. Kreider maintains he was simply carrying out his duties as mascot corporal in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets and protecting her, but the sophomore from College Station quickly became the water cooler talk of the country.
In less than 48 hours since the hit, Kreider said he gained more than 1,500 Twitter followers, appeared on a national talk show and conducted numerous local and regional print and radio interviews. During that time, Corps of Cadets Commandant Brig. Gen. Joe Ramirez said he will pay for Kreider's senior boots, and Kreider will receive upperclassman cadet privileges. An unnamed fan told Ramirez he will pay for Kreider's Aggie ring.
"I thought that this young man deserves something special for what he did on a national television audience," Ramirez said. "I told him these aren't just from me, but every Aggie all over the globe who is proud of what you did."

Texas Tech frat suspended for party banner promoting rape, sprinkler shaped like female genitalia
A Texas Tech fraternity has been indefinitely suspended after pictures leaked of a weekend party featuring a banner encouraging rape and a sprinkler shaped like female genitalia.
The photos, posted on totalfratmove.com, were taken at a weekend party hosted by Phi Delta Theta. One photo depicts a banner painted with the words “No Means Yes, Yes Means Anal.”
Another photo shows a sprinkler attached to a wooden cutout shaped like a woman with her legs spread apart.
Phi Delta Theta’s national headquarters has suspended the Tech chapter for the duration of an investigation into the matter, according to a statement from the national organization.

Federal Judge Hears Closing Arguments in Voter ID Trial
CORPUS CHRISTI — Texas' voter ID law is discriminatory because it was designed to thwart emerging minority voting power in the state and should be dropped, attorneys for the law's opponents said in closing arguments in a federal court on Monday.
U.S. Department of Justice attorney Richard Dellheim repeated plaintiffs' claims made throughout this three-week trial that the Texas law, also known as Senate Bill 14, was a "serious solution in search of a problem" and did little if anything to correct voter fraud in the state.
In fact, Dellheim and other attorneys representing Hispanic and African-Americans voters outlined in their closing arguments before U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos how the law provides substantial roadblocks for those groups, who would be more likely not to have the kind of photo identification now needed to vote.
"SB 14 simply hits hardest those who can bear the burden the least," Dellheim said.

Texas Woman Denied Driver’s License Over Same-Sex Marriage
A woman who recently relocated from California says the Texas Department of Public Safety refused to issue her an accurate driver’s license because her last name was changed through a same-sex marriage.
After Connie Wilson married her partner of nine years in California last year, she took her wife’s last name, Wilson, which now appears on both her California driver’s license and her Social Security card, in addition to all of the couple’s financial and medical records.
This summer, the couple relocated to the Houston area with their three children for work. With her California driver’s license nearing expiration, Wilson took her documents to a DPS office in Katy last week to obtain a Texas driver’s license. When a DPS employee noticed that Wilson’s name didn’t match her birth certificate, she produced the couple’s California marriage license identifying her spouse as Aimee Wilson.
“Her only words to me were, ‘Is this same-(sex)?'” Connie Wilson recalled. “I remember hesitating for probably 10 seconds. I didn’t know how to answer. I didn’t want to lie, but I knew I was in trouble because I wasn’t going to be able to get a license.”

President of Round Rock business arrested in immigration inquiry
Federal authorities arrested three men Monday after a grand jury indicted them on charges that they illegally employed immigrants at a Round Rock sheet metal business.
The president of CORTEC Precision Manufacturing, Richard Anthony Corrales, 55, was among those arrested after investigators with the Department of Homeland Security said the business had employed at least 16 immigrants illegally since September 2013, according to the U.S. attorney general’s San Antonio office.
Also charged were Mon Prum Cerda, 42, a human resources manager, and Leopoldo Yepez, 44, a brake operator for CORTEC. All three are charged with one count of harboring undocumented aliens and one count of unlawful employment of undocumented aliens, the attorney general’s office said. If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison for the harboring charge.
The indictment accuses CORTEC of continuing to employ immigrants illegally after Homeland Security gave notice for the business to provide valid documentation for at least 16 employees, the attorney general’s office said. Business officials told authorities that all of the employees in question were fired, though they continued to work there, the attorney general’s office said.

Republicans dismiss equal pay and abortions for rape as minor issues; Dems pounce
Democrats and support groups are slamming comments made independently by Republicans this weekend that they believe show the GOP has turned a deaf ear towards serious women’s issues.
Republicans have no female candidates for statewide office on the ballot, and Democrats have been waiting for any potential gaffes from the nearly all-white male line-up.
In separate appearances, a Republican political consultant called the low number of rape and incest victims a “minor issue” in the abortion debate, and GOP lieutenant governor candidate Dan Patrick dismissed the idea that government should be involved in pay disparity issues for women.
Both Democratic governor nominee Wendy Davis and lieutenant governor nominee Leticia Van de Putte sent out fundraising pleas on Monday, citing the GOP male statements.
