We’ve partnered with the Charleston Animal Society to showcase kittens in need of loving humans to either foster them or give them a furever home.
The camera will be live at postandcourier.com/kitten-cam 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Of course, the kittens need some sleepy time, so expect to see the lights go out each night. Fear not, they’ll back the next morning!

Help Shelter Cats As A Volunteer Snuggler At These Kitten Nurseries

How would you like to spend your free time as a volunteer baby kitten snuggler?
Can we sweeten the deal by pointing out that the snuggling takes place in a kitten nursery -- a kitten nursery! -- and is part of a grand effort to help save shelter cats' lives?
Best Friends Animal Society currently has two kitten nurseries -- one in Los Angeles and one in Salt Lake City -- where orphaned kitties and nursing moms, are given round-the-clock care.
Staff and volunteers bottle feed the kittens -- who come from area shelters, which often don't have the resources to take care of them -- make food, clean the many, many things that require cleaning and perform all those tasks that help keep these little creatures safe and well.

Maryland Cat Owner Pens Heartfelt Letter to Future Adopter Before Dying

A Maryland animal shelter is hoping that a heartfelt letter written by Susie the cat's previous owner before her death, will help the feline's chances of finding a forever home.
"I'm sure that when she wrote it, she wrote it just to the intent of getting it to the adopter," said Katherine Zenzano, community outreach coordinator of Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Derwood, Maryland. "But we realized Susie was wasn't going anywhere. Some cats are really great at selling themselves and Susie wasn’t selling herself.
"If this letter can in any way help Susie, or any other cats in the same situation, we are happy to get it out there because we think it can touch a lot of people."
Zenzano told ABC News that Susie, a 5-year-old domestic short-hair orange tabby, was brought into MCASAC on May 15 by her owner's son, who said he was no longer able to care for his mother's cat following her death.

This Cat Was Rescued After An Hour Underwater In A Sunken Boat

The cat, nicknamed River by animal shelter workers, was found inside a compartment after the boat was recovered from the waters of Lake Havasu, Arizona
A cat survived an hour underwater in a sunken boat before it was pulled from Lake Havasu, Arizona, over the weekend.
Six people were on board the Commander powerboat Saturday afternoon when large waves overtook it. The Mojave County Sheriff’s Office responded to the boat passengers, and Dive Time Recovery was called in to bring up the craft from the 15-foot-deep waters.
No one knew there was an animal stowaway, said Jon Zuccala of Dive Time Recovery. He and his son raised the boat, then pumped some of the water from its engine. Then they dropped it off at a mechanic and returned the following day to a surprising discovery.
“In the morning, the mechanic found the cat,” Zuccala told BuzzFeed. “It scared him.”

This café wants you to take a midday kitten break

On a sunny morning at the recently opened Crumbs & Whiskers, a café in the tony Georgetown neighborhood of Washington D.C., Monica, a regular, relaxes on one of the many cushions. She stretches, walks to the far wall and with a quick spring jumps onto a shelf almost as high as the ceiling.
She yawns, licks herself, then curls up and closes her eyes.
It’s a typical day for Monica, who is one of roughly twenty felines who reside in this cat café.
“Business has been really good,” said café owner Kanchan Singh. “We’ve had to turn people away on weekends and weeknights. It’s insane.”
Popular in Asia since the late ‘90s, cat cafés spread to Europe, then North America, and have recently found their way to the U.S., where they have veritably exploded. Since the first locations opened their doors in December of 2014, nine have sprung up across the country, with eleven more announcing their intention to open soon.

New York museum opens exhibition devoted to internet cats

From lolcats to Caturday, the Museum of the Moving Image will study the serious business of being cute
OMG internet cat fans! Enough of this obsession with art and science: one museum has finally realised the importance of feline web activity.
From August 7 to January 31, The Museum of the Moving Image in New York will host an exhibition dedicated to all things cat, called How Cats Took Over The Internet.
The museum promises that the exhibition will take “a critical look at a deceptively frivolous phenomenon”, examining popular phenomena such as #Caturday, celebrity cats and lolcats to find out why cat pictures and videos have “transfixed a generation of web users”.

Children With Autism Can Become More Social With A Cat By Their Side

As much as the internet collectively enjoys the furry spectacle of cats, especially kittens, there's also a very real trend of wariness surrounding the feline.
Cats are often painted as unloving, murderous, disease-carrying moochers who manipulate us into a decidedly one-sided relationship — a description that especially becomes popular when they're compared to dogs (and which I fully confess to having engaged in from time to time).
But my dog favoritism aside, the truth is that cats, for all their supposed frigidness, have long been a trusted ally and supportive comrade to humankind. One sterling example of this is in the benefits cats confer to those with socially crippling autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Coaxing Them Out Of The Shell
In 2012, French researchers published a study in PLOS One in which they took a look at whether pets could help people with autism, characterized previously by Medical Daily as an inability to connect to other people and engaging in repetitive, often unusual behaviors. The "spectrum" in ASD denotes the varying degrees of severity with which these symptoms can present themselves.

At Disneyland, feral cats rule

The cats receive terrific care from the park in exchange for dealing with non-Mickey mice.
Since its earliest days, Disney has embraced animals. From Mickey to Donald to Piglet to Dumbo, Walt Disney's kingdom has always been densely populated with all sorts of species. Almost all of them have been animated or, if you go to the parks, humans dressed up in animal costumes.
However, not all of the animals at the California theme park are fictional characters. A colony of feral cats has made a home in the park, largely avoiding the heavy crowds during the day by sleeping in bushes and behind-the-scenes areas, and then emerging at night to hunt for mice and other small prey.
Disney's PR department declined to comment on the feral cat population when we contacted them. Luckily, we were able to gather some intel from Renée Wicklund, a recent visitor who spotted a feral cat and asked one of the maintenance workers about the feline.
Wicklund, a writer and lawyer from New York, told us, "Any multi-acre park in an urban area will probably have some number of feral cats, so I wasn't surprised when we saw a cat hanging out in the vegetation of the 'woodland' area. I was, however, surprised that the cat looked healthy, well-fed, and reasonably acclimated to people. When we informed a Disney maintenance worker about the cat, she told us that, unlike so many other parks, Disney addresses the issue by allowing the cats to reside as a maintained feral colony. The cats are spayed/neutered, and they enjoy their own protected feeding-and-litter area, along with regular veterinary care."

Moment estate agent staff whisk stricken cat to safety after she is 'thrown onto Hammersmith Flyover

This is the heartwarming moment an abandoned cat was whisked to safety as she teetered on the barrier of the Hammersmith Flyover - after rescuers believe she was deliberately thrown there from a moving car.
The cat, who has been nicknamed Bridget, appeared to be moments from falling onto the busy road when staff from a nearby estate agent pulled up and coaxed her into their arms. A video shot from their office, overlooking the road, captures the cheers and clapping of colleagues as the trio carry the animal to safety.
Bridget is now recovering at the Blue Cross hospital in Victoria, where she was treated for a grazed, bloodied chin after her ordeal on Wednesday.
Leon Gaskin led the rescue squad, which also included Sara Persad and Breda O'Mahony, and retrieved the cat using a towel and a cardboard box.
