(Warning: Graphic) Dyed purple kitten rescued in South Bay after living as a live 'chew toy'

Source: SF Gate

A tiny purple kitten in the South Bay is now looking forward to a better future after being dropped off at a Redwood City shelter this week.

The cat — nicknamed Smurf for his dark violet hue — was colored as a very young cat by a sort of undiluted garment dye intended for clothing. Vets found that the dye was more than just for show; it had been masking abrasions and deep bite marks. As Nine Lives Foundation shelter vet Monica Rudiger suggested to The Dodo, these types of injuries may be consistent with the practice of using very young kittens as live bait for dogs being trained to fight.

"In our area, cats are used as bait for pit bulls every day. It's just horrifying," Rudiger said. "That's why you don't offer free kittens out on the internet — they use them for whatever they want."

In this case, Smurf was lucky to find his way to safety.

"I don't know what happened to him, but my best guess is that he was used as a chew toy. We have a cat with multiple puncture wounds and abrasions," Rudiger said. "He can't tell us what happened to him, but I've seen this before."

Edit: I've been informed by wouldsman that the poor kitten has been sprayed with Blu-Kote, a Gentian Violet based wound dressing for domestic animals. It's not supposed to be used on cats, as it is not safe to ingest. I can imagine it's very distressing and perhaps even dangerous for the kitten, as it would instinctively try to lick itself clean.

17 Years with a Cat, Growing Up and Growing Old Together

Source: Lovemeow

She has spent the last 17 years with her best friend Spooky the cat. The kitten chose her one day when she was just a child and the two became inseparable friends.

“Spooky and I, at the very start.”

Two days (after my eighth birthday), I heard very loud meows coming from the bush behind our property. I searched and found a beautiful cat giving birth. My mother and I took her into our home and made a bed for her in my dresser drawer. Upon finding the cat’s owner, we were informed that the mother cat was unlikely to survive birth due to a heart condition, yet she had survived. The owner was so thankful that she allowed me to pick a kitten to keep as my own.

Deciding which kitten to share my life with wasn’t easy, but one little guy sat in my hands more content than the rest. This kitten didn’t struggle or cry, he seemed completely at peace with me.

And so it was then official: he chose me. I named him Spooky.

Orphaned Kitten Raised by a Dog Mama Now Thinks He’s a Puppy

Source: LoveMeow

This little tuxedo kitten was found without a mom, but soon that was about to change. A pregnant dog met the little kitten in need of some motherly love. She immediately took him in and started raising him like her own.

First day at his new home. The kitten wanted some cuddles so badly that he started hugging the teddy.

“Some family friends found this little 2 week old kitten (guesstimate) in a field behind their house. Knowing we foster bottle babies for the local humane society, they called and asked if we could help the little guy. We of course said yes,” Jamie Myers told Love Meow.

“Our mama dog was very close to delivering her pups at that time and took kitten in without hesitation! He was her baby and remained her baby even through the delivery of her own pups.

Disgruntled Russians want cat as next mayor

Source: 3 News New Zealand

The residents of Barnaul, Russia say they are so tired of corrupt and ineffectual politicians that, after next week's election, most would prefer the city were run by a cat named Barsik.

The Republican Party in the United States aren't the only ones heading into an election and wringing their hands over a political outsider.

But in the Barnaul mayoral race there's little worry their campaign crasher will peel off controversial comments like Donald Trump. That's mainly because the leading candidate in that race, Barsik, can't actually speak.

A city of 650,000 people, Barnaul lies about 3000 kilometres east of Moscow, and next week a local governing council will have to choose the next mayor from a short list of candidates.

But when disenfranchised residents, soured by their choice of local politicians, were recently polled, they said they'd rather have Barsik the cat run the town. In fact, more than 90 percent would prefer it.

Cats Help Human with Christmas Tree

Source: Lovemeow, DEC 13, 2015

This is why I have given up putting up a Christmas tree.

Marmalade and his partner in crime Cole make sure every Christmas they get to play a huge role in this festive holiday. There is no exception this year.

As their humans try to put up the Christmas tree, they are ready to ‘help’ and ‘test’ every ornament placed on the tree. Before the decoration is even completed, Marmalade is already half way up tree bending branches and kicking off ornaments that he vetoes.

Motherless Kittens Walk Up to Father and Son for Help

Source: LoveMeow

Two little motherless kittens walked up to a father and son in a scrapyard, looking for help…

One of the kittens poked out his head when he saw the young man.

“My father and I were collecting some equipment for our new business at a scrapyard and we found this kitten and its sibling all by themselves. After looking around for the mother, we found her deceased nearby unfortunately,” Brendan Miller shares with Love Meow.

The kittens were a bit shy at first, but the little tabbies were all alone and hungry. They slowly walked up to their human friends and tried to get some sort of contact.

“They warmed up to us after a while, they seemed to like the camera.”

Another kitten also came out from hiding.

This cat introducing her kittens to a dog is so cute it actually hurts

Source: Metro UK

If you can watch this clip without getting the feels then you officially have no soul.

Here we have a mother cat with two of her kittens, but why is she letting them near this vicious dog?

According to the video poster the cat, a stray, has spent many years on the streets of Russia with the dog, and decided to bring her new kittens to meet her old friend when they got old enough.

At first the dog bare his teeth, but after some paw threatening from the mother cat her quickly settles in to the role of ‘playful uncle’ with the two kittens.

Florida Rescue Cat Makes Amazingly Fluffy Recovery

Source: ABC News, Dec 3 2015

The amazing recovery of a Florida cat who was found covered in ants and severely malnourished has turned the cat into an Instagram star.

The cat, named Silas, was found two years ago by the oldest daughter of South Florida resident Marci Pence. Pence’s daughter, Chelsea, now 26, was walking her black Labrador when the dog kept pulling her over to a grassy area, Pence said.

“They found Silas in a pile of ants,” Pence told ABC News.

The family took Silas to an emergency veterinarian clinic where he was diagnosed with a lung and eye infections and deemed near-death with severe dehydration and malnourishment, Pence said.

Pence took the cat in and nursed him back to health, turning him into a healthy, 15-pound literal ball of fur.

Cat Comes to Safeway Store Every Morning to Hang out with Customers

Source: LoveMeow

A cat named Cecil has been a loyal ‘usher’ to the Safeway store in Portland, Oregon. He comes to the store almost every morning and spends his time greeting customers, making friends and napping away.

Sometimes he waits by the door and greets the customers as they walk in from the parking lot.

Some customers wonder if the cat is lost, so they call the number on his collar and get a message from his humans. It says if you’re calling about Cecil at the Safeway, don’t worry he just likes to hang out there. It also says that he lives nearby and “will find his way home when he’s ready.”

When Cecil is not greeting customers, he is on top of a stack of soda boxes by the window, watching the day go by or just napping away.

These Cats Lost Their Battle with Bees. How We Can Help!

Source: LoveMeow

When a kitty thinks they can win a battle against a bee, they often end up getting stung. As cute as they may look, it’s important for us, humans, to know how to help our fur babies out at times like this.

Cat’s nose after losing a battle with a bee.

Calmly soothe your cat, so they know your presence and feel comforted. If the stinger is still embedded in the skin, do not squeeze or rub it or try to remove it with your hands because you may break it. Scrape it out with a credit card or the dull side of a butter knife.

If your cat ate a bee and got stung in the mouth or throat, take your furry friend to the vet immediately.

After the stinger is removed, you can help get the swelling down with an ice pack. For more info check out this link.
