Nevada Judge Becomes Hero for Telling Trump Lawyer to “Sit Down” Over Absurd Voter Lawsuit

Source: Vanity Fair

Not one to shy away from litigation, Donald Trump is suing the Clark County, Nevada, Registrar of Voters after a Las Vegas polling station stayed open until 10 P.M. on Friday night, CNN reporter Jim Sciutto first reported on Tuesday. According to the complaint, filed by the Trump campaign on Monday, the polling station stayed open two hours longer than it should have, and the campaign wants all voting machines and ballots involved to be set aside and not counted.

Clark County judge Gloria Sturman tore into Trump’s lawyers on Tuesday afternoon. “Are [the votes] not to be counted?” she asked, exasperated, to Trump’s lawyer during a hearing on Tuesday. “What are you saying? Why are we here? You want to preserve the poll data? That is offensive to me. Why don’t we wait to see if the secretary of state wants to do this?”

“I am not going to expose people doing their civic duty helping their fellow citizens vote, that they are taking their personal time to preserve … to public attention, ridicule, and harassment,” Sturman continued, before commanding Trump’s lawyer: “Thank you, sit down.”

Precinct Clerks Fired From Broward Location As Voting Continues Across South Florida

Source: NBC-Miami

Two clerks from precincts in Pompano Beach were fired after a dispute that was the first major issue in South Florida during Election Day.

Deputies were called to the Herb Skolknick Community Center after complaints of possible voter intimidation from the Democratic and Republican poll watchers at one precinct. That led to a dispute between the clerks from precincts 23 and 24 - one a Democrat, the other a Republican.

Supervisor of Elections Dr. Brenda Snipes was notified and she fired both, ordering them to leave the property immediately.
David Booth, the Republican clerk of Precinct 23, tells NBC 6 he was one of the two clerks fired and told to leave the property. Replacement clerks have been brought in.

Advocates warn of thousands of reports of voting problems nationwide

Source: Boston Herald

WASHINGTON -- Voting rights advocates today are flagging numerous reports of voter intimidation, malfunctioning machines, late-opening polling places and other problems, particularly in minority communities from the Bay State to Florida — and are calling on Congress to plug holes they say were left in the federal Voting Rights Act by the U.S. Supreme Court.

“This election may be the most chaotic election faced by voters of color and voters with disabilities in the last 50 years,” Wade Henderson, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, told reporters at a briefing at the national call center for Election Protection, a project by a coalition of voting rights groups. “It’s a perfect storm of voter disenfranchisement.”

By 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time today, more than 5,500 reports of voting problems had come into the organization’s 23 regional locations. That puts them on pace to receive as many as 175,000 calls by the time polls close tonight, officials said.

The number and severity of the reports outpaces the 2012 and 2008 election year, a rise the advocates attribute to the 2013 high court ruling striking down parts of the law requiring some states to seek Justice Department preclearance of voting law changes.

Breaking in Orange & Durham County NC

"Welp. Precinct officials in Durham County have been told to stop using the computers for voter check-in and to start using the poll books."

"There is apparently some kind of county-wide technical problem that has necessitated reverting to pen and paper."

ACLU asks DOJ to investigate LePage over voting comments

The ACLU of Maine is asking the Department of Justice to investigate Gov. Paul LePage over comments that he made Monday about students voting in the election.

“Democrats for decades have encouraged college students from out of state to vote in Maine, even though there is no way to determine whether these college students also voted in their home states,” the governor said in a statement Monday morning. “Casting ballots in two different states is voter fraud, which is why Maine law requires anyone voting here to establish residency here.

"We welcome college students establishing residency in our great state, as long as they follow all laws that regulate voting, motor vehicles and taxes. We cannot tolerate voter fraud in our state.”

Update: North Carolina News Anchor Grips Handcuffs During Election Polling Segment

A news anchor at a CBS affiliate in Greensboro, North Carolina, clutched handcuffs for no apparent reason during a segment on election polling last Tuesday.

Just before summarizing the close North Carolina election polling performed by nearby Elon University, WFMY News anchor Morgan Hightower put down a tablet she had been holding and picked up a pair of handcuffs.

“Now let’s get back to those new poll numbers that Elon released today,” Hightower said, visibly gripping the handcuffs. “They said not only will this presidential race be too close to call in our state, so will the race for governor and Senate.”

The camera next zoomed in on her hands holding the handcuffs, then cut away to feature graphics of the poll results.

Neither Hightower nor WFMY’s news director immediately responded to requests for comment about the meaning behind the gesture.

It is hard, however, not to associate Hightower’s use of handcuffs with the claims of Donald Trump’s campaign and its backers that Hillary Clinton belongs in prison for her use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.

WFMY issued has issued a response:

Last week, our newscast aired a brief story on the deadlock closeness of the Presidential polls in North Carolina using handcuffs as a prop. We commonly use props and visual comparisons in storytelling. In response to a Huffington Post article about our report, it appears social media has separated the words of our story from our pictures and the storytelling intent.

Our story was not about - and made no reference to - any investigation, criminality or possible prosecution of either Presidential candidate. It was a story about the neck and neck closeness of the candidates in current polling - the prop meant to denote the discomfort of these bitter rivals locked side by side in the polls. We should have better explained, more so, used a better prop. We regret the confusion.
