Bob Dylan and Bernie Taupin respond to Levon Helm's death

Bob Dylan, who recruited Levon Helm and The Hawks to be his backup players, turning them into The Band, responded Friday morning with a statement following Helm's passing:

"He was my bosom buddy friend to the end, one of the last true great spirits of my or any other generation. This is just so sad to talk about. I still can remember the first day I met him and the last day I saw him. We go back pretty far and had been through some trials together. I'm going to miss him, as I'm sure a whole lot of others will too."

The message was posted on Dylan's official web site.

Dylan brought Helm and his band to Woodstock around 1966 after the singer suffered a motorcycle accident in Ulster County. While recovering, Dylan and the newly christened The Band rehearsed songs that became "The Basement Tapes," while The Band developed material that became its debut album, "Music From Big Pink."

Dylan and The Band would hook up around 1974 for a run of albums and a tour, "Bob Dylan and The Band."

Bernie Taupin, Elton John's songwriter and the band who penned the tune "Levon" (named after Helm), wrote this remembrance on his website:

"The first time I heard Levon Helm's voice was in a small record shop on Berwick Street in Soho London sometime around 1969. What was it like? Paul on the road to Damascus!

"Oh, I guess I just want to say all these things about the earth and granite of his being, the raw Appalachian timber of his voice and the powerful sway of his backbeat. The throb of his tom-toms the first time I heard 'Tears Of Rage' and that wicked, knowing smile recounting tales of Carney barkers and backwater medicine shows. I'm thinking about him behind that economical kit, the way he hunched his shoulders and turned into the mike like a coiled spring when he sang.

"He was one of three great singers in The Band, three of the greatest singers in any band, and the last of those three to leave us. What other band under God's great Heaven gave us a trio of such eloquent and awesome sonic tools? Richard Manuel had an otherworldly voice, ethereal and legitimately spooky in the best way possible. Rick Danko, with whom I spent some questionably manic moments and cerebral hours and whom I loved dearly, sang like an unfettered young buck, all tremulous beauty and with poignant longing. Anyone doubting this just listen to his vocal on 'It Makes No Difference' from the 'The Last Waltz' soundtrack, one of the best live vocal performances I've ever heard."

Judge: Race 'significantly' influenced inmate's murder trial

Fayetteville, N.C. — A Cumberland County Superior Court judge made history Friday morning when he commuted a death row inmate’s sentence in the first test of North Carolina’s fledgling Racial Justice Act.

Superior Court Judge Greg Weeks ruled that race significantly influenced jury selection in Marcus Robinson’s 1994 trial in the 1991 shooting death of a white 17-year-old, Erik Tornblom.

The ruling means Robinson, a 38-year-old black man, will be taken off death row and will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Weeks said Robinson's attorneys "presented a wealth of evidence showing the persistent, persuasive and distorting role of race in jury selection in North Carolina."

Source: recordonline.com

Levon Helm, Woodstock resident and drummer, the former leader of The Band, has died at age 71.

Helm died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

"We lost Levon at 1:30 today surrounded by friends and family and his musicians have visited him," said Larry Campbell, Helm's longtime guitarist and band leader. "As sad as this was, it was very peaceful."

Campbell, who has played with everyone from Bob Dylan to BB King, said his greatest honor was not only helping lead Helm's band, but knowing him.

In Facebook post, Robbie Robertson writes of visiting Levon Helm

After decades of not speaking with each other, former Band guitarist Robbie Robertson and former Band drummer Levon Helm, who is dying of cancer, shared the same room over the weekend.

Robertson, a former Woodstock resident, posted his message on his Facebook page this afternoon:

"Last week I was shocked and so saddened to hear that my old band mate, Levon, was in the final stages of his battle with cancer. It hit me really hard because I thought he had beaten throat cancer and had no idea that he was this ill. I spoke with his family and made arrangements to go and see him.

On Sunday I went to New York and visited him in the hospital. I sat with Levon for a good while..., and thought of the incredible and beautiful times we had together. It was heartwarming to be greeted by his lovely daughter Amy, whom I have known since she was born. Amy’s mother, Libby Titus, and her husband, Donald Fagen, were so kind to help walk me through this terrible time of sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sandy.

Secret Service Scandal Investigation Involves Brother Of GOP Senate Candidate

Source: Huffington Post

Former agent and current Maryland Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Dan Bongino spoke out Monday about his former colleagues at the currently scandal-plagued U.S. Secret Service. The agency is facing scrutiny over allegations that agents brought prostitutes back to their Colombia hotel during the president's visit to the country last week.

The Secret Service announced later Monday that it had pulled the top security clearance of 11 agents and uniformed division personnel over the incident.

Bongino said Monday on NBC's "Nightly News With Brian Williams" that the scandal "was devastating to me along with the fraternity of Secret Service brothers out there."

Bongino went on to call the incident "a national embarrassment."

But the GOP senate candidate concluded on a more sympathetic note. "I know everyone in the case," he said. "I'm not apologizing for anybody's behavior ... But lives are changed permanently. The ones I've talked to -- their families are just beaten up by this."

Shell reports oil sheen in central Gulf

Source: Fuel Fix

Federal officials are investigating reports of a light oil sheen in the central portion of the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell Oil reported the light sheen to the government’s National Response Center Wednesday, but said in a statement that the company had “no current indication” that it originates from the firm’s nearby wells. The source of the sheen is unclear.

The sheen is located between two existing oil production sites — the Mars and Ursa projects — about 130 miles southeast of New Orleans. Shell operates both projects, but BP has a working interest in the Mars field. BP, Exxon Mobil Corp., and ConocoPhillips each have working interests in the Ursa project.

Shell said in its statement that it has mobilized an oil spill skimming ship — the Marine Spill Response Corp.’s Louisiana Responder – “out of prudent caution.”
