Coronavirus Live Updates:Texas Sets Another Record as Governor Urges Residents to Stay Home

Source: nyt

Texas on Tuesday reported another daily record -- more than 5,000 new infections -- prompting renewed warnings from Gov. Greg Abbott, who urged residents to stay home in an interview with the television station KBTX.

"Because the spread is so rampant right now, there is never a reason for you to have to leave your home unless you do need to go out," he said. "The safest place for you is at your home."

The governor, a Republican who has resisted the idea of another lockdown, said that he was trying to get Texans to grasp the magnitude of the outbreak, which has rapidly worsened in the state in recent weeks.

Cases and hospitalizations there have doubled over the past month. Local leaders have expressed fears that the pandemic may be close to overloading hospital capacity after hospitalizations jumped from an average of 1,600 a day to 3,200 a day.

Update of the alleged cop's Tampax'd frapochino ...

Video footage shows “no suspicious activity” after LAPD cop claims he found a “tampon” in his drink

But almost immediately, this story begins to fall apart, because as women on social media immediately pointed out, that is almost certainly not a tampon.

Everyone with a vagina knows that this is not a tampon. Everyone who has ever worked food service knows that the person taking the order doesn’t make the food nor can you leave unless you’re on break. Another BS story from a cop attempting to garner sympathy. https://t.co/Atxb59ACY9

UPDATE: Statement from Target:
“We take this allegation seriously. We have reviewed video footage and have not found any suspicious behavior. We have shared the video with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and look forward to the conclusions of their investigation.”

America’s cops nurse a victim complex almost as great as the one our President holds for himself, and have a bizarre obsession with victimizing themselves through fast food, like when a Kansas cop claimed that a McDonald’s employee had written “PIG” on his coffee cup and then later admitted that it was him, or the time a Florida cop accused a Burger King employee of putting “dirt” in his food when in fact it was just seasoning or the time an Indiana cop accused a McDonald’s employee of taking a bite out of his burger before admitting that he just forgot he’d already started eating it.

The most recent event of this nature, last week’s “Shake Shack” drama, was revealed to have been entirely contrived by an NYPD police Sergeant, who wasted taxpayer dollars running a scam investigation into the mystery of the poisoned milkshakes which didn’t actually make anyone sick and just tasted weird.

Texas governor says coronavirus spreading at 'unacceptable rate;' experts warn of Fourth of July holiday
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src&w691
New coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in Texas are increasing at an accelerated and "unacceptable" rate, yet shutting down the state again remains a last resort, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said Monday.

Speaking at a news conference, Abbott said Texas is now averaging about 3,500 new cases a day, compared to only 1,500 new cases in the last half of May. Additionally, the rate of positive tests has gone up to more than 9 percent.

Abbott reiterated Monday that masks are still not required statewide and said forcing Texas to shut down again "will always be the last option."

The number of positive cases has been spiking across multiple cities and counties in Texas. A group of experts at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center are forecasting a 20 percent rise in cases in North Texas by early July, as a growing number of young people contract the virus.

"The recent growth appears to be primarily due to increased cases in younger age groups, especially those aged 21-40," the experts said in the analysis shared Monday. "In June, 50 percent of hospitalized COVID-19 patients and 30 percent of ICU patients have been under 50 years old."

'We're Modern Slaves': How Meat Plant Workers Became the New Frontline

‘We’re Modern Slaves’: How Meat Plant Workers Became the New Frontline in COVID-19 War
Workers interviewed by the Guardian describe pattern of alleged negligence at plants run by some of America’s largest food manufacturers.

The president invoked the Defense Production Act (DPA) to mandate meat processing plants stay open during the pandemic. The White House has been reluctant to use the wartime act, which allows the president to order companies to fulfill work it deems necessary to national security. The DPA was used to push General Motors to make ventilators but few other companies have received such orders.

The move, which essentially labels meat production an essential service, also offers further measures to protect the industry from legal liability should more workers contract the virus. The order came within hours of Tyson, a $22bn company and the world’s second-largest meat processor, taking out paid adverts in major US newspapers, including the New York Times, to warn that recent closures of a handful of plants due to the virus could lead to “limited supply of our products”.

<snip>

“I was devastated and I was hurt. Because now, to be truthful – and excuse my language – Tyson really aren’t going to give a fuck about us at all,” she said. “For us employees that work in production, we are treated like modern-day slaves.”

<snip>

“For the last two months people have been dying from the coronavirus and we’ve been asking the White House to put something in effect to protect workers. Now, all of a sudden, with employees getting sicker and sicker, and fed up of going to work, Trump found it necessary to support big business,” Fields said.

Trump canceled an outdoor speech at his rally in Tulsa after lower-than-expected attendance

Both Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were set to speak to a planned overflow crowd outside Tulsa's BOK Center. Members of the media at the event reported that the crowd inside the arena was sizeable but still far smaller than expected.

Trump's campaign boasted that over a million people had requested tickets to the rally. But photos and videos on the ground showed that many sections were empty.

He further claimed that "radical protestors, coupled with a relentless onslaught from the media, attempted to frighten off the President's supporters, adding, "we are proud of the thousands who stuck it out."

But as the Washington Times' story itself noted, "areas outside the arena appeared to be sparsely populated about an hour before the president's arrival." And a pool report from Washington Examiner report Rob Crilly said that there was no sign of protesters or supporters on Trump's motorcade's route to the arena.

The White House’s top economic official said the recent spike in cases of the novel coronavirus across several states is “controllable,” and confirmed that President Trump is opposed to national lockdown measures even if coronavirus data were to show a drastically worsening outbreak.

Larry Kudlow’s remarks come as new infections have surged nationwide. More than 114,000 people have died of the coronavirus in the United States. Nearly 2.1 million cases have been reported.
