Pentagon to deploy roughly 3,500 more troops to Middle East amid tensions with Iran

Source: abc

The moves comes in the wake of a strike that killed Iran's top general.

January 3, 2020, 12:11 PM

The Pentagon is deploying roughly 3,500 more troops to the Middle East in response to rising tensions in the region with Iran and one day after a U.S. airstrike killed a top Iranian military commander.

One official indicated the troops could be stationed in Kuwait, where 750 soldiers from the same brigade were deployed on Tuesday following violent protests at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The decision to deploy additional American forces is partly in anticipation of a possible retaliatory attack by Iran or its proxies following a U.S. drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's Quds Force.

This is a developing story, Please check back for updates.

Pelosi says Trump launched strike killing Iranian general without authorization

Source: the hill

By Rachel Frazin - 01/03/20 08:42 AM EST

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday said that an airstrike that killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani was not authorized and Congress was not consulted on the decision.

“The Administration has conducted tonight’s strikes in Iraq targeting high-level Iranian military officials and killing Iranian Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani without an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iran," Pelosi said in a statement.

"Further, this action was taken without the consultation of the Congress," she added.

She also said the move provoked "further dangerous escalation of violence."

"We cannot put the lives of American service members, diplomats and others further at risk by engaging in provocative and disproportionate actions," the top House Democrat said.

I hope for major snowstorm that day in Milwaukee.

Trump to host campaign rally Jan. 14 in downtown Milwaukee on the same night as the next Democratic debate

President Donald Trump will hold a campaign rally Jan. 14 in Milwaukee just two blocks from where the Democrats will hold their national convention in July, underscoring the importance Wisconsin holds for both sides in next year's election.

The 7 p.m. event at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Panther Arena will be staged the same night as the top-tier Democrats hold a prime-time debate in Des Moines, Iowa. It will focus on a campaign theme of "Promises Made, Promises Kept," according to Trump's campaign.

Trump narrowly won Wisconsin in 2016, becoming the first Republican to take the state since 1984. Critics argued Democrat Hillary Clinton's decision not to come to the Badger State after the April 2016 primary contributed to her defeat, and both parties have made the state a priority in 2020.

.....................................

Trump most recently was in Milwaukee in July as he sought to drum up support for the United States-Canada-Mexico trade deal. In April, he held a rally at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.

In 2018, Trump came to Wisconsin for the groundbreaking of a Foxconn Technology Group plant in Mount Pleasant in Racine County and for a Republican rally in Mosinee in central Wisconsin.

This campaign season, Democrats have been coming to Wisconsin earlier than they usually do in part because they want to show voters they're not taking the state for granted. The Democrats are sending a similar message by hosting their convention this summer at Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum.............................................

GOP senator makes Trump sound like a toddler whom someone must ‘keep watch’ over in bizarre tweet

Sen. Chuck Grassley on Thursday sent out a strange tweet in which he described President Donald Trump using the same words often used to describe a toddler.

In the tweet, Grassley pleaded to have someone in the White House make Trump read a column by the Wall Street Journal’s Daniel Henninger, presumable to influence the president’s trade policy.......................

Fox Business host says we can’t impeach Trump after he killed Iranian military leader

The massive uproar over President Donald Trump’s decision to take out Iranian military leader Qassim Suleimani, and fears that Iran may retaliate in a series of escalations that could lead to all-out war, has pushed the impeachment proceedings out of the headlines for the time being.

But Fox Business host Stuart Varney went even further — according to him, the strike on Suleimani means that the impeachment shouldn’t go forward in the first place.

“Where does it leave impeachment?” asked Varney. “Are we now going to try to impeach and remove from office the commander-in-chief who’s just taken out one of the world’s leading terrorists? That’s quite a question, I suggest.”

Mike Pompeo admits on live TV there was no threat to the American homeland from Suleimani

Source: raw story

Published 18 mins ago on January 3, 2020

Given the potential enormous risks of destabilizing the region, the Trump administration needed a strong justification for launching the strike that killed infamous Iranian military leader Qassim Suleimani. But when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appeared on CNN to defend the strike, asserting that Suleimani posed an imminent threat, he struggled to respond to some of John Berman’s questions.

“[Was there a] specific target overseas?” asked Berman.

“I’m not going to say anything more about the nature of the attack, but know this was not just in Iraq,” said Pompeo. “It was using the proxy forces he has manipulated for so long to bring so much destruction to the Shias, Sunnis and Muslims throughout the region. He inflicted harm not only on American lives but created terrible activities supporting Hezbollah, Hamas. Qassim Suleimani was at the center of all of it.”

“Any imminent threat to the U.S. homeland?” Berman pressed him.

“These were threats that were located in the region,” said Pompeo.

Sadly---This tweet is spot on.

We are seeing the consequence of Trump's non-stop lying today. Nothing he or his administration says about why they launched the attack to kill #Soleimani can be believed. In fact we have to assume Trump and his admin are lying until proven otherwise

Sorry, Trump. Most Americans don’t like you.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/01/02/americans-dont-believe-or-like-trump/

It is easy to overstate the support President Trump has for his policies and conspiracy theories. His approval remains in the low-40s, but the percentage of Americans who buy into his positions and assertions is remarkably small. Trump and Fox News have their true believers, but beyond that minority of the population, the large majority of Americans understand he often spews nonsense or out-and-out lies. And, to boot, they really do not like him.
....................

....................

Why, then, do the election polls, especially state polls, show a hypothetical general election to be rather tight? First, we should all keep in mind that the electoral college and the people in key swing states are generally less antagonistic toward Trump than the country as a whole. Second, Trump has already begun, and will continue, to demonize Democratic politicians as unpatriotic, crazy, socialist and a danger to his base’s way of life. He won in 2016 by making Hillary Clinton even more unlikable than he; he will try to do the same with whomever the Democrats choose to nominate in 2020. Third, unless and until a Democratic presidential nominee convinces voters he or she cares about them and is in sync with their values and basic political predilections, there will be a segment of “soft” independent and Republican voters who shy away from the Democrats.

The bottom line: Trump cannot win a majority of Americans’ respect and affection; he can only try to frighten them about their alternative. That’s why you can expect a vicious, anti-factual campaign that likely will make 2016 look like a picnic.

Trump Winery fires 7 undocumented workers a year after Washington Post report

Source: axios

Fadel Allassan 10 hours ago

Supervisors at Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Va., fired at least seven undocumented workers on Monday because of their immigration status, nearly a year after it was revealed they work there, the Washington Post reports.

The big picture: Two of the fired workers told the Post they thought the company waited until after the yearly grape harvest to take advantage of them during the busy season, which involved 60-hour weeks and overnight shifts.

The firings came about 11 months after the Trump Organization first began firing undocumented workers at its various properties, per the Post.
“They didn’t make this decision in the summer because they needed us a lot then,” said Omar Miranda, one of the fired employees.
